Impressions of SENGOKU 3

Ah, we have another sequel and like SNK's previous attempt (Sengoku 2), it's another sleeper. Given that SNK is somewhat out of business, as a die hard fan that I am, I welcome almost anything out there right now, but this is an exception. If you've played parts 1 and 2, you can pretty much expect the same thing in 3. Slow moving backgrounds, repetitive play and a very, very long time to pass this damn thing. At inception, you choose from 4 characters, one of them resembling Strider to almost the last pixel. The graphics engine is very similar to that of Capcom's many side scrolling fighting games (like Final Fight, Captain Commando, etc.). For example, while punching, if you hold down or up on the controller, after punching the enemy a few times, you automatically throw your opponent (which was a Capcom maneuver).

I would write a full review on this game, but honestly, this game was so dull that I had to stop playing it after 2 levels. The enemies have no personalities whatsoever and the character's moves are limited. When I asked the sales rep about this game, she told me that you're able to unlock up to 30 playable characters, whoopee!! but can you also change your enemies? that's a big no. As most Neo-Geo fans, we buy almost every game we can for collecting purposes, but I'd refrain from buying this piece, because realistically, this should have come out 8-10 years ago. Gee, Final Fight is about 11-12 years old an that game engine is far superior to Sengoku 3's.

For those who doubt how this game can be so bad, you can test it out for yourself if you're local to L.A. There's a game distributor called C.A. Robinson, located in L.A. that has it on display. I went down there to see if it was a worthy purchase, but came away disappointed. The MVS cart should be coming out this week and C.A. Robinson sells it for $495.00 for those interested. Their website is www.carobinson.com. If you need joystick or button replacements for your neo-geo or any other arcade unit, this is the place to buy it. They distribute to all the arcades in Southern California mostly. Don't call them for MVS games, because they don't have much and they're pretty pricey. Sorry to spoil the party, but just wanted to inform those who may be suckered into buying a mediocre game at an astounding price. My rating 6/10.

I still plan to buy it, but I will wait for the price to drop a bit. I love side-scrolling beat-'em-ups, and I loved Sengoku and Burning Fight as well. It may not be a must have for the average Neo Gamer, but for a beat-'em-up fan, it is a requirement.

Hey there triuminator... you were about 15mins from my house at CA Robinson. I played Sengoku 3 back in March at ASI 2001, I wrote a long review of it then, but you summed it up nicely here. The game is not that spectacular, and I too got bored before it was over, but it did have very nice graphics and would do well in an arcade setting. Anyway, drop me an email sometime, we obviously live around the same area. Later,

i hear you bio, but given that it's a very limited release, the price may never drop down as low as you'd like. for 300.00 bucks, metal slug 3 is by far a superior product. even nightmare in the dark (as short as the game is) it's an addicting one and fun to play over and over again. it will have super dodge ball's status in terms of rarity. well, i can't see how this game would be worth money, but then again, as all the neo-geo freaks we are, we buy anything, just to have it.

I was expecting this game to be boring from your review, but it is far from that. I don't like beat-ups like Final Fight so much as fighting games, but I was really surprised how much I like this game. It isn't anything new in terms of gameplay, but the combo/juggling system is a blast. You can combo after throwing an enemy off the wall or hitting them up in the air, and keep the chain going with ninja stars. You could really come up with some cool combos.

Graphics wise, it has really nice character animation, and detailed backgrounds. I like the China stage the best and Italy the least, but I didn't play through Italy as much.

I wouldn't call this a great game, but it is definitely not a boring game in my opinion and with more hidden characters, there might be alot of replay value.

I give this game 7.5/10

Hey Trunks, I agree with you... but try playing through the entire game in one sitting and tell me you don't get bored The game is too long, and I lost my interest, even as psyched as I was to play it at ASI. Like I said in my review a few months ago, I think that this game will do great in arcades where people pop a quarter in it and play for a little bit, but home users are going to play through it once and probably shelf it.

First, great report I missed that one.

Second, I get bored with Beat-em up in general, that is way I don't really fancy them. Final Fight is probably the only one I have never gotten bored with, but it has been along time since I played it. On that note I didn't get bored with Sengoku, but I did play it for 45 minutes the first time and 30 mintues the second time, I will be heading back to play some more though. Maybe, it is just me, but I really dig the comboing and juggling, I finding new ways and longer ways to chain my attacks on the enemies. I think this is why I didn't get bored. Unlike most beat-em ups, there is no skill or strategy involved and it gets mindnumbing really fast, but the chaining combos really requires some creative thought and that keeps me interested. If I didn't combo, then I probably would have gotten bored really fast. I played with only 2 of the characters, but each has different combos to execute.

The picture is from the cover of a doujinshi called Projext X. It has a story with Mai and another one with Kasumi(DOA). Artwork inside is amazing, looks very professional.

No, address as far as I know. I have it in a low-tech medium, paper. I scanned the cover.
