Holy Crap this game is weird.

The roster is weird.

The BG's are weird.

The whole 'Marriage' theme is weird.

The idea of 'ROTD' meets 'NPI' is weird.

But most of all...

The music and the lyrics are just plain bizarre. I cannot possibly comment on the gameplay without first addressing the issue of the music.

Evil Wasabi talked awhile ago about the 'Internet' song. For those of you who missed that post, there is a song (and an accompanying video that plays on a big screen in the background) that sings about how wonderful the Internet is.

Weirder than that is the 'French Fry Song'. I don't know what the real title is... the Japanese title is 'Chiisaina Shiawase' or something like that... it translates to 'It's the Little Things that Keep Us Happy'... the song lyrics and video are about a very depressed woman who goes to a 'Denny's' style restaurant.

'When I'm depressed,' she sings, 'I go to a Denny's style restaurant to eat... I order a Hamburger Plate... but the thing I like best are the French Fries... they are a very small thing, but they make me so happy... so I save them for last...'

Then on the video screen it shows the word balloon of the waitress saying 'I'll just clear away your dirty dishes ma'am...'

Cut to the face of the singer, then a word balloon that says 'NOOOOOOOOOOO!' (Her beloved French Fries have been cleared away before she can finish them.)

The rest of the song is the singer lamenting her stolen happiness.

I'm going back to play some more... I'll write more about the game itself in a bit...

In the meantime though, all I can say is:

WEIRD

Sorry, before I could finish writing my damn review-in-progress I accidentally hit 'enter' and posted the first part only. I finished, then edited my post.

Second Impressions...

The sprites are remarkably similar to ROTD. The new characters, and of course the ROTD characters, just scream 'designed by NOISE FACTORY'.

Most of the stage music has lyrics... again, all of them goofy. This is probably the only video game soundtrack I want to own.

Pricess Sissy is cheap as hell. Average Joe, if you could post your faq at some point, I'd be much obliged.

The code for playing Princess Sissy is very very easy. At the character select screen, put the cursor on anyone, then press ABCD at the same time, and hold.

Third impressions...

The whole game seems to be staged inside an arena, so the BG's are either of the arena, or of the rooms backstage.

I think the concept is neat, but the reality is a bit boring. Despite the zany songs, and different foreground characters, an arena is an arena is an arena...

Still can't beat Sissy... Most of her attacks are blockable for minimum damage. Sometimes you can jump over her after she's just tried to pull a move on you.

Her 'turn-you-into-a-frog-ray' is not blockable however, and getting turned into a frog sucks.

Played some more today...

Trying to master 'Buntarou', he's the yankii character. In Japanese, yankii means 'young tough' or 'young punk', they wear long black coats and pants, and do their hair up in duck tails... kind like this:

<img src="http://www.toshiba-emi.co.jp/domestic/artists/kishidan/20030228.jpg" alt=" - " />

He's got three specials listed:

f,d,df+kick for a rising kick
hcb+kick for a dashing kick
hcb+punch for a taunting move that works like a cancel.

But I also discovered he has another move

(mid-jump) qcf+kick for a diagonal kick,

This leads me to believe that there are other moves than the ones listed for each character.

Other Notes:
-each character has four extra palettes
-the loser of a round has moustaches, glasses etc. painted over top of their portrait
-another goofy song is the 'I Have No Money' song

Yup, it's just one of the many small details that add up to make this a very strange game.

I should add that all of the lyrics are in Japanese so most of us won't be able to tell that the lyrics are silly. Thanks for the translations though! The music is GOOD despite it being silly lyrics!!!

Once I get my hands on the Soundtrack (assuming it has a lyric sheet) I'm going to sit down (with iku) and translate them all for you guys.

The music is basically rock... but the vocal style is 100% enka: cheesy love ballads written especially for drunk Japanese salarymen...

<img src="http://www.bc.wakwak.com/~otsuki/index_image/top_otsuki.jpg" alt=" - " />

...sung by melodramatic singers like this.

For it being a fighting game, mention Frank Zappa for some of the wildest lifve you have eVER seen.

And for a nreat trivia, can you name which famous rock song was written specifically about a Zappa concert?

The answer is: Smoke on the water by deep purple. Get the lyrics, its a compeltely true story, the casino in Switzerland catching fire during the concert...

やったぜベィービ!

<img src="http://www.noise.co.jp/gouketuji/image/buntarou.GIF" alt=" - " />

I beat the game using Buntarou. Actually it was really easy. I just switched the 'stress meter' to MAX in the options screen, then hit Princess Sissy with three or four supers and that was it.

Supers in this game seem to do a lot of damage.

Buntarou's ending was pretty short, and it looked like it was drawn using a paint program, but still it was funny.

Gonna spend the weekend beating the game with the other characters just to see the endings, then I'll work on beating Sissy without using a MAX'ed out stress meter.

Hey. At Animazement (this past weekend) I got a nice little collection of prizes for singing Chisana Shiawase at the Karaoke competition. The judges mentioned that I was 2nd place on best overall. I even went and recreated the song so that I could do it without the vocals in it. It was fun. Even had the Mcdonalds hamburger, fries, a lone candle, and a no-smoking sign for props. :)

Love that song.

Arcadias from April and May have a more complete movelist for each character.

Shoot, you were there? Did you catch any Neo comp in the game room? wink

I wasn't able to get the game room mod to let me bring a Neo, but they did have 2K1 on the DC. That, and they were missing a puzzle game so he let me bring Magical Drop 3 on Saturday. :)

Me and my friends got to check out the Magical Drop. I mostly played either KOF2k1 DC or Alpha 3 Saturn. Though on Friday, I did spend most of my game time on Fatal Fury Real Bout Special. They had the Ikaruga machine set up with the TV turned sideways there too. However, I didn't play the videogames too much there. The gameroom played Shaolin Soccer and I HAD to watch that from beginning to end. Great movie, by the way. :)
I wasn't in the gameroom on Sunday, though.

I was on all 4 of those games and nothing else Saturday, so I probably played you at some point. I was 2nd best on MD3, there was a guy with dyed hair that had a strategy I had never seen before. That and I was using a Saturn Hori on both Alpha 3 and 2K1 DC, although it was giving me problems on the DC for the first half of the day.

(Edit: But if you remember any Durham player, it was probably <a href="http://www.neo-geo.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_profile;u=00003250" target="_blank">SOMEONE</a> cosplaying as Eddy Gordo. :p )

Damn, I saw a copy of Arcadia two days ago in Akihabara, but I didn't pick it up (I usually don't read game magazines, the Japanese is too much for me). Guess I'll have to go back and get a copy.

BTW, does the Matrimelee soundtrack have a lyric sheet?

what exactly do you mean?
There are too many written characters I don't know and can't read. It's depressing! (Plus I don't really like seeing screenshots etc. before I buy a game and play it at home.)

I can read manga though. The illustrations help me guess the meaning of the parts I can't read.

<img src="http://www.yanmaga.kodansha.co.jp/ym/rensaijin/img/saburo/sabu_l.gif" alt=" - " />

This is 'Elite Yankii Saburou', my current favourite.

(Glad you like the illustrations. I'm trying to sneak more Japanese culture onto the boards.)
