For the 100th time... Set filesize limits for sigs.

Seriously, this is so fucking ridiculous, there are clowns walking around with 600kb in assorted animated gifs and there have been times where I've seen over a megabyte from one user.

There should be SOMETHING stopping this.

Anything over 100kb is just absurd and although my main beef is with the weight of the images, I know some people have had troubles with the size of them as well.

Something like 500 pixels should be the roof.

But having to sit here for 3 minutes waiting for a thread to load because of someones sig just pisses me off to no end.

I agree 100%. A maximum file size should be set, and any sigs that run over that size should be cleaned and locked. I think 100K is a fair max, within that size you can fit quite a lot of stuff. All my little Metal Slug gifs only add up to about 50-60K I think, well under that limit. A rule should be put into place on this and enforced . . . <img src="graemlins/spock.gif" border="0" alt="[Spock]" />

I could not agree with you more, Blaine. It's fucking insane. I've had it up to here with asshats linking to ridiculously large .gifs off gamegen.com and the like.

And I don't want to hear the "Ohhh, I didn't know it was that big" excuse! If you were hosting the pic yourself, you would have known how big it was. I feel so sorry for gamegen's bandwidth sometimes. None of you ever make the animated .gif's anyway. The only person I can think of on this site who's made animated .gifs and sprite rips is Gargoyle7, and not surprisingly there's other people linking to his pics on neogeotemple.com too. Back when I was new to this site I had an animated Milky .gif in my sig that I made myself, and was only 14k in size. Nothing ridiculous.

I am all for the 100k (or even better, 75k) and 500 pixel limit.

I made one animated gif that I have seen others use, and it's the blue mary topless gif from RBFF, when you knock her out the boundary of Sound Beach.

Animated gifs are often long tedious work. Anyhow, there's a limit to how many pics you cna use in a post. I'm sure there's a hack you cna use to limit the size of pics too.

Yes, and also write a faq/instruction on how to use them as their sigs.

Some of those newbies always put in those huge gifs in every single post they made... <img src="graemlins/ohno.gif" border="0" alt="[Oh No]" />

Blaine, you beat me to it. I was just thinking about to open a suggestion about that while watching some of the new (and old) members' giant sig pics.

And yes, I'm talking about the pic size as well, not only the weigth of the file itself. These fukn big pics mess up threads and cause load delays. Why 100K/500 pix? That's still too big IMO, half of that would be more than enough.

My home PC, unlike my office machine, is a dated Pentium-S with 200 MHz, and it regularly goes down to its knees not only because of giant pics, but also because of insanely long and big animations. At home, my CPU usage usually is about 70-80% if some of the funny anims show up.

The funny thing here is that the most of you complaining here have images yourselves!

Just turn images off on your browser if they're getting to you, that's what I do.

There's a difference between most people's reasonable sig pics, and ridiculously large animated .gif's.

BTW, turning off images makes it impossible to tell what graemlins people are using. <img src="graemlins/spock.gif" border="0" alt="[Spock]" /> <img src="graemlins/mrt2.gif" border="0" alt="[Mr T]" /> <img src="graemlins/annoyed.gif" border="0" alt="[Annoyed]" /> <img src="graemlins/drool.gif" border="0" alt="[Drool]" /> <img src="graemlins/veryangry.gif" border="0" alt="[Very Angry]" /> :o <img src="graemlins/eek2.gif" border="0" alt="[Eek 2]" /> <img src="graemlins/spock.gif" border="0" alt="[Spock]" />

I'm with this. I've got cable, so it doesnt affect me personally, but if its making the site a pain to surf, it should be stopped. Limit sigs.

Exactly. And I must say that it pisses me off to be forced to turn off anims and pics just because some guy sees the need to put a fucking 800k/400x400 pic underneath his posts.

What's the next suggestion for load time-plagued ng.com members? Using Lynx?

Yeah. Someone's sig made the thread take 6 minutes to load. It was the lightsaber one. For the love of narrowband users! LIMIT SIGS!

No one said anything about out right banning of sigs, just limiting the size of them.

This is analagous to me saying 'I think it's dumb to pay more than $500 for a video game' and you saying 'It's funny because you buy video games too'.

Sorta missing the point.

I just picked 100K as the maximum because it's a round and somewhat reasonable number. It's still quite big, don't get me wrong. As a rule of thumb for web design you should try to keep an entire webpage under 100K unless absolutely necessary, so it'll load quickly. That's a whole page, not just one image.

With decent compression a 1024x768 jpg easily comes in around 70KB. That's a big image, but I was trying to be fair to people who like animated gifs, as they do tend to run big.

You may be right about 50K being better, just personally I start to get annoyed by images larger than 100k.

And the only reason I went with 500 pix is because it should be fine on a 640x480 monitor, which is the lowest we should ever expect to encounter, but also for people running much larger resolutions, 200 pixels or less is really hard to see. So I'm just trying to be fair both ways.

500 shouldn't affect a low-res browser too much but yet still be a good size for high-res browsers.

Well, for the 100th time, I wonder if Shawn really cares for the 100th time, don't forum post, e-mail him, jesus. Suggestions here is just a brief look and shrugged off. Sorry for being an ass about it.

The only times I've ever seen something change on this board is when they were posted in the suggestions.

Thing that come to mind immediately; The flood-control, no post counts in the war room, the t-shirt design competition and most recently Shockwave's sig being removed were all done via the suggestions forum.

I don't know what all has been 'done' via e-mail but it's not as if the suggestions don't work at all.

Besides, I've emailed Shawn before and I never hear back from him.

I might as well just yell out my window, this way at least other people see it and can say they agree or disagree.

I agree with all of you. I also say violators should have their profiles locked for a certain amount of time instead of until they ask for their profile to be unlocked so they won't whine and moan about their profiles being locked when they can at least have the patience to wait till their sentence is over.

Ops, I didn't realize that!
When I'm in Barcelona I'm on 56K, but here in Pittsburgh I have incredible fast cable connection. I saw a nice gif the other day and decided to make my first sig linking to it.
Well, it is 167 kb and quite small size, but still is aboce the limits you propose.

Do you think is too much? I have no problem removing it and finding another one smaller.

Blaine, it looks like in this case your suggestion paid off. Check your user profile area where you would normally edit your own signature, a new rule seems to have been put in place . . . :)

OK, I've noticed they now suggest not to pass from 100 kb so I changed my sig, now it's only 82kb. I'll have to look for some funny dialog for that one...
