Galford, the Catalan flag does not represent a country. It represents a division of Spain ( cataluñia ) wich they speaks a diferent version of the spanish language. It's just a part of Spain like any other else, but with a variation on the language.

Man, you have ABSOLUTELY no idea about what you are talking about. Please, if you don't know the reality just don't say anything. I hope you posted this without bad intentions, but your ignorance needs to be repaired. I wouln't say anything about Portugal I'm not sure about, specially about history as I know this can hurt somebody's feelings, and I expect you to do the same.
The Catalan flag DOES represent a country, although nowadays that country is NOT an independent state. Catalonia (that should be called in its original language Catalunya, where "ny" is pronounced as a Spanish "ñ", Portuguese "nh" or French "gn") existed as an independent country with that flag many CENTURIES before Spain even existed. In fact what we call Spain nowadays was created when the two most important countries of the Iberic Peninsula during the 15th century (Castilla and Catalunya) joined to become one. Notice that Portugal was also a part of Spain during some years in the 16th century, although now is a different state.
And about the language, Catalan is a total different language from Spanish, although they both share the same latin roots as Portuguese, Italian and French (in fact Catalan is also quite similar to French). But is a different language and it's recognised by the Unesco, it has more than 7 million speakers.
I hope things are clearer now. I agree there's no need to put this flag in the message icons, but there already are 3 people that want to have it under their avatar.
