Character Line Up: 10.0
Although there's no King this year, I'm very satisfied with the character line-up this year. Most of the teams are "back to normal" as with the exception of the Women's team, the Ikari team, and the lack of the donkeyball sucking Sports team, the 94' teams have reverted back to the original. Then there are teams based on the year either they debuted or became a team. Like Iori Vice and Mature are 96' team, Yamazaki Blue Mary and Billy are 97', etc. And as an exception, The New Face team are the 98' team although they were in 97' too. Rugal's the last boss again. What you expect from the franchise boss of KOF? He has changed. He is blonde with wires coming out of him
Music: 10.0
If this is a dream match, and all the characters are from the past. Then of course KOF must bring back it's old music. This time the music depends on the character not the team. Like Leona's theme is different from Ralf and Clark's. It's a very big improvement over KOF2K1's disappointing OST. Man did that stink.
Gameplay: 10.0
Once again, more perfection. First off, there are no more strikers. Second, the teams are back to being 3 on 3. For the newer stuff, you get to perform hidden SDMs that can only be done when your low on energy and in MAX mode. Speaking of MAX mode, activate it and it's almost like a Custom Combo feature. You get a bar that slowly goes down and you can cancel moves that weren't cancelable before and you get infinite DMs. With MAX Mode in play you can perform SDMs. Some of the Hidden SDMs are complicated to pull off like Goro's dp,rdp+BC. Athena's is qcf+AC, backwards Psychic 9, plus a follow up. In one follow up you get to see who could be the two princesses you rescue in the last level of Athena.
Graphics 9.5
The only thing that ruined the perfection on the graphics is the lifebar. It coulda been better. Everything else is fine.
Story: 8.0
There's no storyline here but that doesn't mean it deserves a bad score. the generic ending kicks but and is the reason I gave it an 8.
Overall 9.0
KOF finally got it's act back together this year. This one KOF you don't want to regret not playing. If push come to shove by the MVS game or better yet, buy the AES game coming out in December.
