Soveriegnty?
Ha! It was nice while it lasted...sadly I'd argue that the only truely soveriegn states left in the world are in Sub-saharan Africa and a few other basket-case countries (north Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan) scattered over the world. For the rest of the world, particularly the global North, we are soo tied into each other economically that no country can really do anything to each other. (That's why I never lost a second of sleep over the whole china/spy plane issue) People who still think soveriegnty is as strong as ever should look at the last few countries we've, umm, "interevened" in. i.e. Yugoslavia. Why do you think Russia was so pissed at what we and the EU were doing? Sure, they tried to make it sound like they gave a damn about their "Slavic Bretheren", but the fact is, once that precedent of forced interevention got established, it can now be invoked whenever a country gets too out of line. Hell, even Jesse Helms (hack, spit) is starting to realize exactly how tied into our neighbors we are. He used to be the source on anti-Mexico banter, now he met with President Vincente Fox to discuss improving trade relations.
Anyway, I could go on for hours on this. Heck, I could even use neo-geo.com as a great example of this trend. I think in the next 50 years we are going to see more specific ethnic/cultural nationalism what won't be based on the state they they exist in, unless the country in question is a nation-state (one nation with one dominant ethnic group, like Ireland).
Anyway...
