There are (sort of) small spoilers in here for those of you who arent finished with Wind Waker yet.
I finished The Wind Waker after I got home from work tonight, and it got me thinking about all things Zelda-past, present, and future. The way WW ended it made me wonder about the future of Zelda. And that got me thinking about the old ones.
The NES. The first Zelda game was ground-breaking. Almost every aspect was new and exciting about it. Zelda 2 comes out and it totally different from 1 except for the storyline and the setting.
Then the SNES comes out and we get A Link to the Past. The graphics were a huge leap over the first 2. It was also more like 1 than 2 not only in the way it played with the top-down perspective but with being able to find and use different weapons, and just everything in general.
Enter the N64. The Ocarina of Time. It has a cool new 3D aspect to it, and a re-invented storyline and new mechanics with the music system, and the way weapons and items work in 3D. Then we get Majora's Mask. A Zelda game that is bizzare when related to the other games in the series. Very different from OOT but still with similarities.
Gamecube. The Wind Waker. The graphice are a huge leap over the 2 on the N64 in the same way Link to the Past was over the first 2. Also its more like OOT than Majora's Mask.
It seems to me like there is a trilogy pattern developing. 2 on one system with the second being different, then 1 on the next system that blows the last 2 away that is more like the first.

NES-Zelda
NES-Zelda2-weird
SNES-Zelda3 buttrock

N64-OOT
N64-MM-weird

Then the trilogy starts over with the next new system. New storyline/graphics/gameplay mecahnics. Another reason that leads me to think this is the way WW ended. With Hyrule pretty much gone and the Master Sword (as far as I can tell) in a permanent resting place doing its job, they are going to have to re-invent the storyline again.
So my prediction is that we will not see another Zelda on Gamecube, but there will be 2 on the next system Nintendo creates.
I realize there are a couple flaws in my theory mostly having to do with A Link to the Past since its story really wasnt a continuation of 1 and 2 besides the fact that Ganon and Zelda were in it. Even with that problem, I still think it works out as the 3rd in the trilogy as the awesome version of the 1st in the Trilogy. Bear with me here, its late
With all that said, I am very pleased with WW. LttP will always be my favorite Zelda though.
I hope you enjoyed(for those who stuck through the whole thing) my late-night ramblings on one of my favorite game series of all time. -Nate
