Nice! I've never heard of the manufacturer, but those specs are damn good!

I would recommend asking about that brand and model on this board, just to be sure:

What the hell is Monivision? Specs may look sweet but they always do. I wouldn't shell out until you talk to someone who can vouche for the picture quality a Monivision TV produces. Unless they cover the cost of shipping it back to them for a full refund if it's a POS I would wait.

I wouldnt even consider it, for one thing its a no name brand and nobody has herd of it. I'm very up to date on hi-fi A/V equiptment so I've pretty much herd of it all.

Another problem that I have with it is the fact that it is only a 32 in tv, a 32 in 16:9 tv and that translates into crap screen size. for every thing except wide screen DVDs and HDTV the size of the screen in 4:3 mode is going to be the same size as a 24-25 in tv-YUCK! IF you are going to get a 16:9 tube 34 in is the smallest you should go.(yeah I know its not SMALL but they do make wide tubes bigger now)

And lastly on my major problems is that it does not have a DVI input, all sets coming out now should have this because of the new digital copy protection regulations that are coming out soon and also it a pure digital signal!!!!!! The best quality picture transfer you can get at this time!

So my suggestion to you is to save another $1500 and get the sony 34 in wide screen set I think the model number is KV34XBR800(I think) but check out sonystyle.com. This set has the best most natural/neutral picture tube out there unless you want to spend more and get a Proton or Princeton set. wink

Looking at a press release, I believe this is the same company.

http://www.albatron.com.tw/index_en.html

Never heard of them.

Would you rather get a name brand Sony that you know is gonna break down in a few months? Who knows, this is probably more reliable than any big name brand.

My Sony wega is the only Sony product besides my PS2 that has not broken down, and remains reliable to this day.

From my experience...I'd rec. a Sony TV.

However

From my experience...I'd also rec. a PS2...and we know how flakey those are.

I recommend Toshiba. I was in best buy the other day, and their 32" flat screen Sony floor model had a nice big green spot on the upper left side.

I've had nothing but good luck with sony, especially tv's. My parents have had one for more than a decade now and it still works perfectly, never once had to be fixed. My Wega has shown no signs of failing. Same with my ps2, miraculously.

Only thing that was sony that broke was a vcr.

Aha! Time for my story!

First bought a Sony Shelf System when I was about 12. Broke after a year.

Next, I got a Sony car stereo. Stopped reading CDs after a year.

Got my nice Sony Vaio PC. Works great. DVD/CDR drive stopped reading after a year+. Lines of Pixels are starting to go.

Sony Mini-Home Theater. System just wouldn't turn on one day, after a little more than a year of ownage.

PS2 works great though...and I use it a fucking LOT. Shin Contra? I've played it 10,000 hours.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I don't think I could even list all the Sony products I've had fail, but I'll try:

Sony 15" Monitor bought in 1991 -- LOUD high-pitched squeal from day one... returned it

Sony 17" Monitor bought in 1992 -- worked, but the geometry distortion was BAAAD, and this was a $1600.00 monitor! I sold it.

Special high-end $650 Discman stopped reading discs properly after around 18 months of light use

PS1 - Stopped reading discs properly after about two years of moderate use. Bear in mind that, of about six people I knew with PS1 systems, mine lasted the longest.

high-end Sony 'ES' CD player ($600) - was taken back three times in first six months for three different problems, finally replaced by dealer with new upgraded model. New model was taken back once for a problem with the CD tray.

Two Sony LaserDisc players - neither one would read about 40-50% of the movies tried -- Sony blamed it on the LaserDiscs not being manufactured 'to spec', despite the fact that two other major brands had no problems. Sony ended up becoming 'known' for making shitty LD players.

high-end Sony VCR - started making an annoying sound whenever it was playing or recording after about 12 months. It later started 'eating' tapes if they were paused.

Sony special $200 computer speakers - left speaker stopped working after six months

PS2 - second controller (which was hardly ever used) had a problem (probably from day 1) where the 'shock' mechanism would cause the buttons to press by themselves. I sold the PS2 after a year, but it was still working at the time.

...and I could go on. In fact, the only Sony product I have ever had that still works is a set of speakers with subwoofer that I bought back in 1993 for (of all things) my Neo-Geo home system. I am currently using these for my computer and my Neo MVS/supergun setup. Maybe someone else made them and Sony just put their name on them. :D

It took me a LONG time and a lot of crappy Sony products to relaize they were crap and I will never buy them again, consoles notwithstanding.

I also have a bunch of horror stories from selling Sony computer products (I now won't deal with Sony unless a customer insists), but we are already way off-topic.

Back on-topic, let us know how that TV works out! :)

Hrmmm I never heard of the company who makes that set, which makes me pretty leary to say the least. I mean it'd be fine for Widescreen DVD's and the few games that support 16:9, but other than that it's really going to be small for anything else.

As far as the Sony debate goes.

I've had this Sony walkman for over 7 years and it still works great to this day.

We've had a Sony TV for over 11 years (I think its been a LONG time). It's one of the early Trinitron models. It did break after 8 years, however it cost us $50 at the local TV repair shop to put back together (the speakers blew out). It's still working perfectly to this day.

PS2 #1: Had it since launch day, worked perfectly untill it was dropped five feet to an untimely demise by my sister.

PS2 #2: Have had it for a few months, no problems here.

Jap PS2#1: Have had this for a few months also, great machine and its as solid as the rest.

I had a Sony headunit for my car that lasted almost 4 years untill it too was prematurely killed in an Auto accident. I now have a new Sony headunit for my Jimmy and it's been awesome since day 1.

Have an old school Sony 80's stereo (complete with artificial wood grain finish) that works till this day, same thing w/ the speakers.

Basically I work at a large engineering firm where they're all pretty much A/V freaks and as far as TV's are concerned Sony is king. Friend of mine just got the top of the line 32" Sony HDTV, its insanely good. Lots of guys have been getting the table top Sony projection TV's and I hear nothing but good stuff from them. Others have had Sony bigscreen TV's for years now and they're still working great.

Point in fact: Sony sells more TV's, stereo's, walkmans, discmans, hell EVERYTHING than almost every one else who competes with them. As such they have the acceptable limit of 1-2% of products shipped that are defective (that is a standard average that is across almost any electronics manufacturer). Problem is when you ship millions more pieces of electronics than any one else, your 1-2% of defective pieces are a lot more numerous.

So what happens is you have more people with "bad Sony stories" than there are of people who have "bad RCA stories", etc. The problem is you rarely hear from the people who buy Sony products and have them last a long ass time.

Peace

JHendrix

I already posted this in the tech forums but I think it's a worthwhile suggestion for the US members of these boards:

I see that a lot of American people here own extremely expensive, high-end TV sets. I've seen some in the collections section, for example. I suppose that one of the motives would be to have the best possible picture quality when playing your Neo Geo, right?. Now think for a moment: even with S-VIDEO mods, an AES system hooked to one of this ultra-high tech TVS usually gives disappointing results. On the other, hand I have an unmodded brand new AES system and it gives an AMAZING picture with the SCART RGB cable when hooked up to my good ol' Sony Trinitron TV. Now my suggestion is: if you're really worried about quality, and are willing to expend massive amounts of money to obtain it, why the hell don't you just import a nice European TV and use a SCART RGB cable?. You can get a good Sony 29" WEGA in Spain for 350$, brand new, ship it to the US for say 100 $, and you will get a much better result in the end for at least half the price.

What do you think?

Your right about the picture quality issue with fancy tvs. A real purist would buy a monitor and not a tv to play games on. Just my opinion.

Yep. My Neo looks better on my 15" LCD than it does on my 43" DLP projection set (although, this is mainly due to an interference problem in my supergun).

Then again, I got my 'good' set to watch DVDs , digital cable, and play XBox games in widescreen at 720p. :)
