Try living in a city that has some people already quaranteened. Fucking strange. I'm being careful.

Disinfect, wash your hands. Washing your hands is the best precaution.

I have some comming too, but no worry. It's spread through breathing it in from person to person, so I'm sure the Game will not be infected, but washing your hands is a good Idea!

Yeah man I SERIOUSLY doubt that it's possible to get it from a package even if someone who had it spent a day breathing right on it. Diseases like this just aren't passed along in that way.

S.A.R.S. is a serious resperitory virus that is spreading throughout china , there is no cure for it although it can be treated ...but some people have died from it allready .

recent breakouts in an apartment complex lead scientists to believe that the virus might be airborne, as opposed to just being passed along via droplets.

that certainly ups the danger.

Yeah, this news has me worried about importing items too, so I did some reading...

Here's some tidbits of info I gleamed off Reuters Alertnet.com:

________________________

SARS is a type of atypical pneumonia, which is usually caused by viruses, such as influenza viruses, adenovirus and other respiratory viruses, according to Hong Kong health officials.

The World Health Organization says the main symptoms of SARS are high fever, dry cough, shortness of breath or breathing difficulties. Changes in chest X-rays, which are indicative of pneumonia, also occur.

SARS may be associated with other symptoms, including chills, headache, muscular stiffness, loss of appetite, malaise, confusion, rash and diarrhoea.

Health experts say the disease has an incubation period of between 2-7 days, with 3-5 days being more common, before victims start showing flu-like symptoms.

- WHO and Hong Kong experts say the virus spreads through droplets by sneezing or coughing and such direct infection can usually occur within a radius of about three feet (one metre).

The mortality rate appears to be between 3 to 5 percent. In Hong Kong, at least, those who are infected invariably develop severe pneumonia, which can cause numerous complications. Conditions of victims deteriorate very quickly, in as little as five days.

The virus can also spread indirectly as it can survive outside of the human body for three to six hours. Contact with any object that is tainted by droplets containing the virus, for example, a contaminated phone, could lead to infection if a person then touches their eyes, nose or mouth.

Health experts have not ruled out that it could be airborne, which dramatically raises the contagious nature of the virus and would make it far harder to contain.

- WHO says SARS appears to be less infectious than influenza, and is not highly contagious when protective measures are used. Hong Kong's health chief has said the virus is highly infectious, though some other medical experts are more cautious about that possibility. Hong Kong officials say it can be killed by a solution of water and common household bleach.

So to be safe, make sure you clean all your items carefully as you receive them and keep your hands clean as well.

Obviously, due to the number of deaths, they have taken great precautions in Hong Kong to ensure that no one else gets infected.

I would like to think they have some form of sterilization of all items being passed between countries, especially now.

You can never be too careful however...

Well I've got PCBs coming from the HK, how do you sanitize/clean those motherboards with all the prickly soder points and roms? I figure if I spray em' down with something it just fuck up the productivity of the board. Seriously considering just never opening the damn packages now, and I ordered my shit back in January :( I mean dying or being killed is one thing if it's heroic/in combat/etc... but going out like that just ain't acceptable and is uncool.

Come on guys, why not just lock yourselves up in your room and never leave the house? There's a line to be drawn and you guys are crossing it. I understand the scare but it's nothing more than a scare. You're just getting packages. There are many millions of people living in China and Hong Kong and you're worried about getting one package from that area. If you think that you have a good chance of getting ill from that then I can't imagine how you guys drive to work every day.

One of my coworkers come back from Hong Kong last week, it was my last day at work, and so she wanted to shake hands to wish me luck with my new job...

lol, I did, but I washed my hand after when she wasn't looking.

Seriously though, DMH has a good point; you've got a better chance of having a car accident then catching SARS, and you've got no chance whatsoever of getting SARS from a videogame.

Not unless there is a nice wet snot ball on it when you get it... and you like... eat it or something wink Really, the germs most likely would not survive the trip, be it because it takes to long, or during the process of scanning the package (many post offices use xray and other gamma type radiation to scan items for illegal and dangerous substances).

I don't think you have anything to worry about. I know the concern, it is normally to be afraid, but I don't think you will have anything to worry about with these games. BUT, just as a percaution, simply wash your hands after unpacking and inspecting the boards. There is no way the germs will last more than a few days outside the human body, but, better safe than sorry I guess,

LOL, anyone remember the Simpsons episode where a guy coughs his virii into a parcel that gets shipped to Springfield...? :D

Seriously tho, I also buy half of my game imports from Hong Kong (mostly OtakuMW) and after watching the news about SARS I was slightly concerned... but it's very unlikely that one catches SARS from a parcel shipped from Hong Kong or even Singapore. A virus (if it is one) like that couldn't survive on the cold and hostile surface of a video game box or a bunch of bubblewraps, it needs a living organism with a weak immunity system to live and reproduce.

Talk about paranoia, I'm currently on vacation in Taiwan (NBM came over for a visit for the past 7 days too).

The virus can only be alive on non-organic objects for less than 3 hours, any pkgs shipped will be 100% safe. If you want to be 100% sure, once you get the package, clean the package well with alcohol wipes and wash hands often (even better with alcohol wipes too).

While living here, keeping away from large crowd is the key, as well as not touching elevator button, poles in the subway. Wearing mouth cover improperly actually increase the chance of getting affected since the virus can get in and get stuck in and/or around your mouth. I have seen a few wearing mouth covers while picking their noses, touching poles, and eating snacks w/o washing hands.

From what I heard, any arriving flights into Taiwan, if there's ONE single person showing signs/symptons of SARS,the entire crew/passengers will be quarantened and detained for a week.

well actually that is wrong. If somehow it gets to your mouth...etc.. you will get it.

There are only a couple ways of killing viruses and bacteria.

If they sneeze in the general direction of the cart... it can be contaminated... once you touch it... if you touch any opening to your body (Ie Sore, Mouth, eyes..etc..) you can get whatever it is.
