If you are looking to build your own PC... www.pricewatch.com is the way to go. Check your sunday paper for all the specials also.

If you plan on getting a brand name pc, go for www.alienware.com or www.dell.com

stay away from compaqs for god's sake!!

I built myself a

2.53 ghz P4 (533 FSB)
1 stick of 512meg Corsair DDR 3200 ram
Abit IT7 Max2 rev 2 mobo (u can get something alot cheaper and save yourself $50)
DVDrom (I know you want a writer)
Disk Drive
Case w/450w Power Supply
1 WD 120gig hdd

All for $820 or so.

I reused my videocard/soundcard, and of course, monitor/keyboard/mouse. Not bad. All from newegg.com <- very good service btw.

I built my PC too. Price watch will soon become your best friend. If you look around some sites will offer discounted prices if you buy the Mobo, Ram, and processor all at the same time. Thats i did.

Heres my pc:

P4 1.9GHz (400 fsb :( )
512 MB Kingston DDR 2700
Soyo Dragon motherboard (eh i forget exactly which one it is)
Geforce 4 TI 4600 (chaintech gold edition)

And then i have the usual stuff floppy, cd-rw, case w/power supply etc, etc.

For my Monuitor i use a 19" KDS Flat CRT. I like it and you can pick them up at walmart.

I always thought that this was the coolest motherboard ever:

Not the best motherboard out there but it has a tube amplifier which just buttrock

Hell no... Price watch has too many random companies usually ones that arnt very reliable. I just built my self a puter a few months back. Get the shit from Tiger Direct they kick ass. Built a hella cool system for around $500-$600. Thats w/o DVD burner since I didnt get one of those. But a freind of mine is doing one now for around the same price and it kills my system by far for the same price range.

shit fuck intel.

build an AMD system.

www.newegg.com is a GREAT place for pc parts.

i build my system, which im pretty tired of listing allready, for ~$360.

a7n266 vm/aa nforce mobo - $70 (built in everything, including 5.1 sound)

athlon xp 1700+ $50

512mb ddr 266 ram $50

GeForce 4 ti4200 - $124

icute tech case - 30

coolermaster xdream cpu fan/cooler -12

400w ps - 30

i get about 200fps in ut maxed settings 1024x768 with opengl. d3d gives me a constant 75 (refresh rate synced) i get a pretty constant 60 in ut2k3.

Thats not entirely true. I have never had a problem buying from any sites I found on pricewatch. Nor has my friend who also put together his pc.

Good sources for PC hardware reviews:

http://www.anandtech.com

http://www.tomshardware.com

I did build my own PC as well, its by far the best way to go. You can choose every component and put together knowing exactly what you have, vs. some off-the-shelf POS commercial system. Mine definitely works great . . . :)
