Hong Kong singer and actor Leslie Cheung is reported to have committed suicide after falling from a hotel room.
Local TV and radio stations have reported that the Canto star, whose most famous role was in the Oscar-nominated Farewell My Concubine, was found dead on Tuesday.

Although police refused to reveal the deceased's full name, they did confirm a man with the surname Cheung had leapt from a hotel room at the luxury Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

A suicide note was found on the body which was discovered at 0706 (1106 GMT).

Cheung, who was 46, rose to fame as a Canto singer in the 1980s after studying at Leeds University in the UK.

He then carved out a successful film career as one of the few Asian stars to play openly gay characters.

His acting career took off in 1986 when he starred opposite Hong Kong actor Chow Yun-Fat in John Woo's gangster movie A Better Tomorrow.

Farewell My Concubine saw him rise to international fame as the film was a worldwide art house success.

In the film Cheung played a gay opera singer who falls in love with a fellow performer.

Other film roles included Happy Together and Days of Being Wild, directed by Wong Kar-wai.

Cheung moved to Canada in 1992 but returned to Hong Kong to stay after its handover to China.

That's horrible.

I loved Farewell My Concubine

He played his character so well (a character that was depressed, emotional, and committed suicide), I wonder how much of his own personal life he let flow in to that role (of courss, that flick was 10 years ago).

Still, a shame.

It is really sad. I grew up listening to his music and really enjoyed his movies as well. He always seems alittle bit gloomy from mid 90's on.

Don't knock suicide, all right?

I'm not for it... in fact, I also see it as a poor option to take. Still, you have no idea about the pressure or mentality that a person may be under, and very often a mere lapse in judgement can lead a person into doing something that they would reconsider a minute later. I can't imagine the kind of pressure that celebrities have to put up with...

Let's try and relate to our own lives, though. Have you ever just snapped and broke something or insulted someone in a quick fit of rage, only to regret it the second you realised what you'd done or said? Same deal.

As for Leslie... fuck. I loved that guy. In fact, I watched "Happy Together" the night before he killed himself.

This was a surprise to me, but I'm not too shocked. I read an article a few months ago about how he was suffering from extreme depression and dreaded the thought of growing old. Also, in all of his performances, I was able to see something very fragile in the characters he played.

It's upsetting, but I suppose he's at peace now... and he'll be seen as a legend.

Yeah man that sucks seeing as how he had to go out like this. ABT is one of my favorite film series. The part that sucks even more though is that unlike the ending of ABT II, Chow Yun-Fat, Ti Lung and Dean Shek cannot avenge him, cause there's nothing to avenge. He wasn't my favorite HK actor but it's sad none the less.
