Shenmue II = god

I got shenmue 2 on xbox last week at EB, they had it on sale for a couple days at 9.99 brand new (it's back to 29.99 now).

THIS IS THE BEST GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED.

I'm playing it in 480p progressive scan, and the 5.1 blazing, this game is incredible looking, I read some review saying the graphics were not up to par since it was a DC game... what were they smoking, some of the facial expressions during the real time graphics are incredible.

I watched the "Shenmue Movie" dvd it also comes with, it's pretty cool, definetly worth 10 alone, it has english and japanese audio tracks, but strangly no english subtitles for the jap track, it does have jap subs for the english track though, making me think this is just a copy of the JPN release you could buy over there.

Lan Di is a badass, I'm having Tao Pai Pai flashbacks.

Anyway, the movie was great, and I just scored the DC version of Shenmue 1 for 9 bucks sealed. Can't wait to play that when I'm done with II.

YU SUZUKI IS THE GOD OF GAMING. buttrock

IGN has also confirmed from Yu Suzuki that Shenmue III is coming along nicely, and it's on xbox :)

I love the series, yet I am torn between my Xbox and my DC Euro version. The Xbox ver has 5.1, sharper visuals and almost no slow-down. On the other hand, the DC ver has the Japanese dialogue with English subs.

Great series either way. buttrock

Are you daft? Shenmue was originally planned to be on the Saturn.

Yeah it's awesome, Yu is the man. I'll take 480p and 5.1 over jap audio anyday :) I heard the DC one had some mean slowdown in it too.

At least they used the same voice actors from the 1st games dub, so it's not all out of place when you play both.

If the 1st Euro one was in jap as well, I'd def hunt down both, but I really don't wanna play II in japanese and not be able to play part 1 in it as well.

I got the same deal, you can't pass up a cool game like that for $9.99.... I also did the same when they marked down Buffy for Xbox! buttrock

THe game is really good, for $10. It gets ace for atmosphere but the heart of the game is still pretty linear/restrictive.

I picked up Shenmue II for $10 also.

Now I have two unopened copies of Shenmue 2 (euro DC/xbox) sitting on my shelf. :/

Fran hits it on the fucking head again.
I tried like crazy to enjoy that game, but it's just dull. I do appreciate the enormous amount of work involved, and how ambitious the project is, but in the end, it's a really boring 3D RPG with some incredible atmosphere. At least it has cool unlockable classic Sega arcade games.

I'd much rather kill 20-30 hours playing VF4E in Quest mode. Far more satisfying.

Oh so right.... I'm playing through it right now... it takes so long to get to a point of actual excitement in this game.... Shenmue was more fun to play through I guess cause it was the first time I played through this type of game.

Shenmue 2 is very much the same except w/ more stupid ppl to talk to who all say pretty much the same sh!t.

As much as i love the Shenmue series, even i admit that at times it can be quite dull. To me it always seemed like a sort of detective game (talking to people, getting info, etc..) with the occasional QTE and Fight sequence. I bought my copy of Shenmue 2 about 2 days before Wind Waker came out so i haven't been playing it much since. Zelda is just too good to me.

"Boring" is a fair assessment, but I prefer "relaxing". wink

I genuinely enjoy the characters/story, so the long cut-scenes/conversations never bothered me, and in Shenmue 2's case specifically, the areas are very interesting and varied - so walking around looking for clues never grated on my nerves either.

Naturally, I skipped the whole "find a job, make some money" aspect by cheating (dice games) so my experience moved at a much better pace than others, but...

It's not a game for everybody (it's not a game for most people, in fact), but I hope those people can at least appreciate what it tries to do.

I never thought I'd enjoy a 2 hour trek up a mountain (doing little more than making small talk with another character)...

Ah, Shenmue II, a game like no other. Some may hate it, but I loved every minute of it. Although I haven't played the X Box version of it, I have the DC Euro version and I must say, it is one of the greatest games of all time. It's easily in my top 5 games of all time. I loved the game so much I actually played through it 5 times(yes, 5 times). From the atmosphere, characters, setting, and story, it is one hell of a great game. Now I'm wating for Shenmue III, one of the few games that gets me very excited.

I loved Shenmue II. It certainly is well worth the money considering how large the game is, but maybe it's the length of the game that has many here consider it boring.

The storyline is engrossing and I love the jobs to earn money (although the forklift job in Shenmue for DC was the best.)

BTW, I'm surprised Plisken hasn't replied here yet. wink

shen mue II is great.
i guess you can attribute it to being boring.
i m not sure i was ever bored when i played it.
maybe a little in the jp one since i didnt know
what i was doing and i got stuck.
but i think its a good game to just go with the flow.
in fact the long walk and talk with shen hua during
the last chapter was probably one of my favorite parts of sm II
learning about the culture and just strolling.
i guess its something you have to be interested in
at first to like. sm has never been about instant gratification.
if you want that go play your gta games.

And final fantasy games aren't boring spending 5 hours leveling up killing the same monsters over and over? (RPG's in general for that matter).

Please, shenmue has the best storyline I've ever seen, if it's that boring you have a 10 year old ADD attention span.

Think what you want but shenmue is GOD. buttrock

And ha, I did that dice game cheat too, right when you get off the boat in HK, keep betting the whole bank right after you save. tickled

Shenmue 2 is one of the best games ever made. A lot of my friends complain that its boring, or that theres not enough to do. The way the game pulls you into its atmosphere by sheer detail is amazing. I really really hope a third one comes out. I'm really shocked this game doesn't have more of a following.

The shenmue games are so engrossing, if you've got the time to just sit with it for a couple of hours a night and really get into it.

I think the series is a nice change from the usual madness you get in most games.

It won't float everyones boat, but i think its great.
