i had installed 9.0 and it didnt boot, it would hang at 'finding module dependencies'

so i was like, aight, maybe its becuase my hardware is too new or somethin, whatever.

so i dled 9.1, took like 2 fookin days because the damn servers are loaded.

so i installed it.

woop, it got past the 'finding module dependencies' but then hung at like somethign to do with the keyboard. then i rebooted and it froze a little past that. finally i rebooted and it hangs at 'finding module dependencies' and it keeps doing so.

my hardware configuration is this:

asus a7n266 vm/aa mobo, nForce chipset.
athlon xp 1700+
chaintech gf4ti4200
dvd rom drive
512mb ddr266 ram
ps/2 keyboard
usb logitech wireless mouseman optical

i think it may be the mouse, since its usb, and i read at the mandrake forums (i woulda posted this there but it wouldnt let me) so im going to try with a ps/2 mouse.

also, this mouse did work on an older p2 system, with usb so i dunno wtf is up.

Do the logical thing, strip down all non-essential [edit:] drivers and see if it'll load at all.

Then, check the compatability of drivers between the stuff you have hooked up, insert the drivers, recompile the kernel.

You may want to check out www.Linuxquestions.org

I myself am dabbling with redhat 8 linux on one of my extra pc's. I just tried updating the nvidia drivers and now I can't get into Gnome!

Thank you kernow, but being such a newbie to it..I have no clue how to do that yet.

Knowing windows so well...this is a...HUMBLING experience for me.

So while its booting...Do I just type in XF86Config?

so, i found out why it doesnt work with usb stuff.

when you have the two extension usb boards hooked up, it just gets like fucked for some reason with this mobo.

so im going to disconnect them and reconnect my mouse to the 2 built in ones.

still doesnt solve my lan problem tho.

im such a noob, but like flava, i fuckin own windows hardcore.

buttrock We all own windozeeee!!! buttrock

I like the whole Linux idea though... So i'm willing to put myself through a couple of headaches to learn it...there is some cool ish to it that I like so far.

I think I may be able to solve my problem with the driver now since Nvidia made a new easy to use driver yesterday...Damn..if only I had waited an extra day. LOL..

Redhat 9 is also out..I'm curious to how that works and what the differences will be.

Sonic...do you have the latest bios flashed for your mobo? Asus may have a fix for that already...it seems they always have an usb issue to fix with newer boards.

I just noticed I said Viruses in my above post instead of devices. WHOOPS!

Damn, I'm stupid sometimes.

Stupid question:

Did you run Xconfig when you installed and if so, did you make sure it was the right card and/or it had the right settings EXACTLY for your card? RAM.. etc...?

That might be f'n it up too.

Lunix? WTF? Do you want to make your PC completely worthless or what? Might as well use OS/2

I doubt anyone owns windows either.

I work as a win2000 tech and I've seen NT/2K do some pretty nifty things that suprised me.

(Active Directory Services/Dynamic DNS) etc..

Shit .. no-one owns windows.

maybe the home versions.

haha, ignorant
Absolutely.

Without getting into a techno-geek argument about which is better...

In 10 years, Linux will be the network operating system. It's going to be *the* server software (it already is, in many areas) and the embedded device software. Whether or not they take over the desktop, remains to be seen. A few more pieces of shit out of the Bill Gates pipeline and you may just get it.

The biggest things going for linux are:

1. It's free.
2. It's completely scalable.
3. It works with just about everything.
4. It's insanely efficent.
5. It's coming around to full windows compatability/comprability.

Bill fears linux.. he really does. He's mainly fighting 1 and 2 at this point.

This is why I like Mac OS X. It's got a UNIX underside and a candy coated shell on the outside.

Don't let that pretty interface fool ya, its some hardcore geek UNIX underneath all of it. Plus, unlike Linux, you don't have to know the CLI if you don't want to. I have yet to see a Linux distro that you didn't have to break down and put some funk down on the command line. In OS X, you can if you want to, but most of the time its not necessary. Best of both worlds.

Ohhh, plus its plug and play ability is worlds ahead of Linux (as I would expect it to be).

Linux is great for the server, but still has some ways to go for the desktop.

I couldn't help myself.. fear my RAM usage.

Broken I might be sending you a some code soon to see if you can compile it with GCC/mac sockets. :) (uni stuff)

You may try Knoopix, an easy to configure, Debian based distribution. You can even boot from the CD to see if all your hardware is recognised without installing anything on the hard-drive.

At least that's what I heard, the only UNIX that I use sometimes is IRIX64.

Is mandrake just a different company as opposed to red hat?

really... I don't remember how to do the above because I have not messed with it in awhile, but it is not that bad once you get into it. I am sure VT could help you out with that :)

It take just a little time. Compiling the Kernal is not difficult. It is just as much as executing 1 command.

That might work if he is running Debian but Mandrake would get a bit confused.
