Hello. Lots of friends have said that they didn't like this movie but it's an all time favorite of mine. Does anyone know if and where i can buy Galaxy Express 999 on DVD even if only subtitled in english. I really would like to locate this.

Right now this is only available on VHS, it's not a big seller since only Japanese seem to know this series very well, tends to be real cerebral stuff which probably pales to recent Anime releases just based upon character designs. Big Leiji Matsumoto fan actually, but I know probably few people know him and would say 'Who?' if I mentioned his name.

You can get it on DVD, along with the other 2 Galaxy Express DVDs, except it won't have subtitles. Bandai Visual released these in Region 2 (Japan). You can check it out for yourself at CD Japan .

Since Bandai released it in Japan, and it has a sort of cult following, I would expect to see it released here in the US sometime. Just a matter of when.

I believe they've released parts of the series (at least I believe there was a Galaxy Express 999 series) as Harlock Saga. Do a search on DVD Planet for Harlock and take a look at the entries that show up.

As far as getting it subbed, there are bootleg DVDs out on the net of these films. I won't help you find them if you want them, you are on your own.

Good luck!

Yeah, i'm a pretty big Leiji Matsumoto fan as well. The most recent thing i've seen from him was those Daft Punk music videos though. And as to the question of bootleg DVDs on the internet, there is no way i would want those even if someone would help me get them, i like to stick to the real things.

Long time Matsumoto fan here too (going on 20 years)... I recently converted my VIZ VHS copies over to a VCD format and they look almost identical. I too want GE999 on DVD, but in all honesty I just wish someone would release with English Subs the complete 1978 42-Episode TV Series of *Space Pirate Captain Harlock, and Queen Millennia on DVD. But with everything being about flash these days (the newer stuff is okay but I like the raw grit of the older Matsumoto stuff) I'll not hold my breath. Fact is there are so many good anime out there that would/could blow some of the newer stuff out the water but it'll prolly never get seen here. Stuff like "Fang of the Sun DOUGRAM" is toe-to-toe with Gundam, even more so on the tactics factor but at 75 episodes and being old animation (this is Ryosuke Takahashi not Matsumoto BTW) that prolly will stay only untranslated and among the Anime Guerrilla Movement, which in the long run is probably a good thing rather than being tarnished by johnny-come-latelys.

Damn I have waited for so long for Ginga Tetsudo 999 to come out on DVD with subtitles. That and Arcadia of My Youth, when is someone going to get this stuff out?

Anybody else have the Harlock Saga OVAs that came out here? It's a pretty nice DVD. Capt'n Harlock owns.

Adieu and the first movie have been released subtitled in english in Hong Kong on DVD, these are OFFICIAL releases, not bootlegs. Adeiu is region free, although it says region 3 on the back, the other is not region free, it is also region 3.

I have not seen these on ebay lately, all I see are bootlegs right now.

Here's a review for Adieu DVD:

http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/1375.php

Akira Matsumoto anime on DVD in the USA right now is:

Maetel Legend
Queen Emeraldas
Harlock Saga
Cosmo Warrior Zero
Gun Frontier (Hopalong Harlock)

The original 70's anime TV series of 999 is now on DVD in Japan in box sets, 3 of the 6 boxsets are out already, the series is about 115 episodes I think.

You can also get the Viz graphic novels, that were the sequal to the original tv series, they are awesome but viz has not finished them yet, only volume 1-5 are out.

I too would love a complete release of GE999, but it won't happen.

I would also love to see a release of the subtitled Yamato series, although I did grow up on Star Blazers, and it is currently being released on DVD along with with the movies, which are subtitled.

Now, going back on my memory from the early 90s, I believe that the complete GE999 TV series exists in dubbed form, along with Captain Harlock. Besides this, the first 2 Yamato movies exist in English as well, the second one was released on VHS. At worst, maybe Kid Rhino might pick this stuff up, like they did with Battle of the Planets/G-Force/Gatchaman/Eagle Riders (I wonder if these characters have an identity crisis).

Anyway, I agree with some of the other previous posters about Leiji Matsumoto, it is very deep 'stuff' he does.

Scary enough, I have Arcadia of my Youth on LD, got it from Ken Cranes when they were blowing out LDs. Even worse, I JUST got an LD player, only 6 years after I got the LD!

Are the ones that were released in Hong Kong in Japanese with English subtitels, or in Chinese with English subtitles? not that it would make a difference, just curious

Usually anything released from HK is going to have it's original Japanese language with both Chinese & English subs. There's no need to feel bad about buying boots if it's the only way to procure a decent copy of what you want on that particular format... supporting boots when THERE IS a legit copy on the particular format and you know better is when it's a crime. Heck if I waited for someone to actually pick up the entire Hokuto No Ken series (since Manga only did the first 30 episodes ONLY) I'd never have that series. Sometimes you gotta' go Guerrilla/Underground to get what you want you know? When the Real deal becomes available you then support the legit ppl with the license. I don't buy much anime so I don't worry about it much anymore.

Bottom line is that most HK stuff WILL be in it's original lang with Eng subs, just don't expect quality in those subs to be consistent and it will be Engrish at best.

The official region 3 HK release, and yes there are official DVD releases in HK, are in japanese with english and mandarin subtitles.

Animeondvd.com does NOT review bootlegs, ever, follow the link I posted. Adeiu is an official region 3 release, it is region free though.

The original GE999 70's tv show has never been on DVD before, it's still being released on DVD in Japan, so saying a US release will never happen is not true. Every single one of Matsumoto's 999 universe OVA's is on DVD here now, even the brand new cosmo warrior zero and gun frontier. Gun frontier was just released in 2001 in japan, and we already have it.

You can order the 999 boxsets from CD Japan, but get ready to pay 300 each for 24 episodes.

I'm pretty sure Viz will be releasing the GE999 boxsets here, they own the rights.

If you guys really want to see the series come out, why not email a company like Animeigo. A lot of the shit they release is off the wall stuff that no other company has the balls to touch.

They released Macross, which is more mainstream than some of the shows they have, but they also did Kimagure Orange Road, a 48 ep series from the mid-80s that has a cult followin, but not much more. They are also releasing Urusei Yatsura, one of the best series of all time IMHO. How off the wall is that? Do you know any other company out there that would release a 192 episode series from the EARLY 80s, subbed only, about a boy who gets stuck living with bikini wearing space alien that believes they are married?

Give it a try, what's it gonna hurt? They say they are always up for suggestions on shows to look at and possibly release.

Damn, i can't believe how expensive all of those episodes are!! i'm sure they're worth it but wow, that's a lot of cash. I'm still a little confused as to what would contain enough english for me to follow what's going on, i checked the one's on CDJAPAN, and i was under the impression that they didn't contain any englihs?

D'oh! My mistake. I guess I didn't read all the way to the bottom of your post. Sorry.

Most Japanese releases do NOT contain English subtitles at all. Some series and studios have begun releasing their DVDs with Subtitles, but most do not. If it doesn't explicitly say that it has English subtitles in the description at CD Japan, than more than likely it doesn't contain them. I'm sure these DVDs do NOT contain subs.

I think a lot of studios should change to supplying English subs on their R2 releases. This would help cut down on sales of bootlegs, as a lot of people seem to buy the bootlegs over the real release only because the originals don't contain English subs. Of course, boots are cheaper, but honestly, you get what you pay for. Add on to this the fact that TECHNICALLY we aren't supposed to be buying DVDs outside our assigned regions, that seems to be a big factor as to why Japanese studios don't supply the subtitles.

I believe all of the Studio Ghibli collection DVDs contain subs; some even contain the English dubs as well.

I can confirm English Subs on Spirited Away, and the Dub on Laputa.

As for GE999 being released, very little has been released compared to what actually exists... Its still funny that the Yamato has shown up in the GE999 universe.
