Okay, okay, okay.

We all know I'm sick of cell shading but I'll admit it looks pretty good (I'm so thankful they woke the fuck up and fixed House of The Dead 3...that was just stupid looking).

I particularlly like the smoothness of the strokes and the details (check out the bottom pic and the dude on the left side of the picture...look at his hands, look at the crease in his shorts...good shit), definately looks as good as the X-Box cell shading (personally I think it looks better, but that's a subjective thing, you know?).

0% chance of this coming stateside but maybe they'll bring it over just because of the graphics.

I don't see why people dislike cel shading so much... I think it looks awesome. I think if a game is based off something that works as a cartoon, it will work as a cel shaded game. One Piece, being a cartoon, will work as a cel shaded game... Zelda, having been a cartoon, will work cel shaded. You're right about HOTD3, that looked pretty dumb... I saw a preview for it on G4, and it looked totally different (and cooler) Than what I had seen before, so I figured they must have changed something... That HOTD movie looks pretty damn bad though.

As long as RoboTech plays as good as it looks with that cellshading I will be uberhappy.

I hated cell shading at first too, not because of the way it looked but because I know that there are a bajillion games coming out that are using it and its going to get old fast.

Well...I've been doing 3D for years so for a while there Cel Shading was the Holy Grail! I mean, I spent hours upon hours upon hours (well, my computer did at least :) ) making a video that looked cellshaded using 3DSMax and Photoshop, it took something like 13 hours for a 5 minute short (for those who'd like to know it's simple, all you do is take a frame of the animation...that is render it out as a series of bitmaps, not just a movie clip, and then in Photoshop make an action or a droplet that copies the frame, creates a new layer, pastes and then uses the filter 'find edges' and then changes the blending mode to multiply...usually works okay, really good back in the day before we actually had cellshading plugings). Then we started to get people writting shaders and plugins until now you can actually get a commericial cel-shader, vector renderer or another 'ink and paint' renderer and do it no problem.

When I first saw pics of Jet Set Radio I went NUTS, all of my friends at school went nuts. Absolutely apeshit, my 3D teacher was impressed as hell.

But it's been done, you know? I agree that something like One Piece looks good cell shaded but games like Cel Damage (and even House of The Dead 3)...it's just a gimmick, a graphical trick.

There are other types of Non-Photorealistic (NPR) rendering techniques that could be at least attempted. Mojib Ribbon, for example uses more of a water color effect, which is very cool.

I'd rather see more energy put into pushing newer techniques than slapping an existing technique onto a different genre. I mean, you have cell shaded action games, cell shaded driving games, cell shaded gun games, cell shaded fps...what's next? A cell shaded RTS?

Trust me, they'll just get lazy and try to sell the game by the gimmick of cell shading alone...and that's just bad for games and gamers in general.

it worked well with JSR cuz it was new and innovative. Now its over-used and boring. They have to take it to the next level like zelda , or its just gonna suck.

BTW what game is that a pic of?

I haven't read much of this thread, but all I have to say right now is that I'm sick and tired of people ripping off the concept... and Zelda is just retarded for GameCube as of now... and not just for the cell shading...
