What do you folks think of Anime/Japanimation (good lord, when was the last time someone called it that?)? (good, bad, all porn?) Also, which are your favorite?

I like anime, but not the HC stuff.

The ones I like are Trigun (obviously /me eats donuts), Maze (I saw eps 1+2), Hand Maid May (so sue me, it's funny/cute/horribly wrong), Inu-Yasha, Black Planet, Comic Party (see my comment for Hand Maid May, MA-I BU-RO-ZA!!*), Excel Saga (Don't think... feel. --Nabeshin), Speed Racer, Gatchaman/G-Force, and Noir.

The only one I didn't really like out of the ones I've seen is Angel Sanctuary. It just seemed a bit too surreal, and the incestuous overtones were just too weird for my blood.

the final fantasy movie was good but weird. only seen vol.1

anime is great. i just dont see why people always tell you to watch it subbed. i prefer it dubbed. they voices arent always great, but i feel like im getting more out of it. and no its not cuz im slow and i cant read the subs

As I've said before, my interest in jap cartoons has dwindled like a Sailor's pay while on shore leave. The only one I really care for is Gunsmith Cats, It was definitely meant to be viewed in English. There were only 3 episodes, but the comic books rule too.

It's really a matter of personal taste. Also, the words actually match the mouths
Furthermore, some puns might be missaid (puns in Japanese; I still shudder at the BoFIII pun "We'll call him Peco... after all, he does look a lot like an onion")
And never underestimate the power of the "purists" who really despise the English-language voice actors (I personally shudder at the Excel Saga dub possibility; what would they do to E-chan's voice? )

the only dub that really sucked from what i have seen is the sonic movie. but eventually you get used to it (why the fuck they didnt use jalleel white is beyond me)

i guess it is a matter of taste.

speaking of dubs, something that has a really bad dub is shenmue. hehe, "im looking for a man with glasses *pause* a leather jacket *pause* and a tattoo on his arm." lol

Without reading anyone's replies, or even the original post, what I think of it is this: I will eventually get out of it as more and more, more and more, I seem interested only in the finite supply of the past. I watch almost none of the new stuff, at all. The motivation and excitement just isn't there any longer. For new stuff that is. When the industry went bang towards the end of the 80's, so did most creativity in the business, the remaining bits of which have already disseminated into the works of the early-mid 90's.

Jaleel White... O_O Incidentally, which series did you think was better? (There were two going on at about the same time--one that was based more on the Archie comics, but darker; another that was more cartoony, and had "Adventures of" at the beginning of the title)

Personally, I prefer different things about each one. The darker one had a higher sense of urgency and didn't have some of the more hackneyed things of the lighter series (robot son/wife, "Robotnik for President," shots of Robotnik's ass *shudder*). However, the lighter series had some good points; Sonic did the speed thing all the time, pretty much, and Tails was actually a sidekick, rather than a trainee.

And it also comes to the voices. It depends on whether you prefer "Jim Cummings voice #3" or "obscure British jazz musician who knows Elton John." Then again, in the anime, I heard they gave Robotnik a cheesy German accent. And in Sonic Adventure, he sounds like a less-accented version of the lighter cartoon's Robotnik.

Personally, the Japanese voice in the game has a bit of coolness/urgency.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Evangelion. It has so many twists and sub-plots that you have to watch it several times before you understand everything that is going on. Some of the deepest anime I have ever witnessed.

Well I like all Anime.

Revolutionary Girl Utena
Macross Plus
Cowboy beebop
Zenki
Golden Boy
Lain
Record of Lodoss wars OVA and TV
El hazard
Tenchi
La Blue Girl
Card Captors
Ushiro and tora

etc.etc.etc.etc.etc.

Lately I have been converting my tapes to DVD, although I notice things like Hyper doll where the cut the Live action scenese out. I thought those were great...

there is only a few Anime titles I do not like.

And for those that Hate Hentai you obviously have not seen me VIX of Nen Nen to "addit up" by the Violent Femmes Sometimes when my Friends come over to watch vids (male and female alike) I will put in a hentai flick and we would each pick a character to read subtitles for. Funny as hell. I don't know maybe I am just wierd. Have not done that in a long time though.

There are so many I like, well here's a couple off the top of my head:

Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
The Slayers
Lain
Macross 2
Sakura Diaries
Berserk
Escaflowne
Outlaw Star
Saber Marionette J

Films:

Princess Mononoke
Akira
Perfect Blue
Ninja Scroll

That's all I can think of right now. I prefer subtitled anime, but dubbed is okay sometimes.

heh. i prefered the darker ones (commonly refered to as the saturday morining ones, SatAM, the other one is AoStH) and you cant forget about sonic underground. jaleel did the voices for sonic, manic (sonics brother. he kicks ass) and sonia (sonics sister...yes it really did sound like urkel. )

the sonic adventure voice i think is his best, although the anime one really grows on you.

oh, and i prefered the more funny robotnic in AoStH but thats just me. gotta love his mom, lol

Another great one that I saw (all of it, afaik) recently was FLCL/FuRiKuRi. It's just so insanely weird, everything from the whole premise of monsters coming out of a kid's head to the different styles they use(check out the Matrix kiss) such as South Park (the guy with the fake eyebrows is in a barbershop and it's done like South Park, and in another part, the main character, Naota, looks and sounds like Kenny--he manages to survive to the end, though.) It's by Gainax, so it is required by Japanese and international law to kick much ass. If you can find it, I highly suggest getting it.

One thing I forgot to mention: Canti, the robot with a TV for a head, actually "eats" Naota in pretty much every ep, and "craps" him out in one episode. They only made 6 eps though (or those were just the OAV's) ;_;
