I love "A Better Tomorrow 1 & 2", "Bullet in the head", "Killer" and "Hard Boiled".

Has anyone watched his latest movie?
Is it good?

His stuff with Chow yun fat was gritty, but after he started making a lot of stuff here in the US, it's gone cliche. I mean, Hard Target with Van Damme, I blame that on Van Damme, but then Mission Impossible 2 - it was crap. The part in the end with the doves... Broken Arrow was crap too.

Face off was genius though. It was Travolta's only good performance since pulp fiction, but Nick Cage was 10x better. Thus the new movie might have hope. I guess I'll see it later on.

A Better Tomorrow was my favorite John Woo HK movie. Sometimes it was a little too melodramatic, but the relationship between family bonds, friendship, and work was really well rendered. The theme song really worked for this movie too. Really catchy. Hard boiled was okay, but I think it really only had a cool name, and one guy who was "the ultimate hardcore" (as I like to put it). You know, the sadistic killer who you can't stop. By the end of the movie he was wearing an eyepatch and for good reasons, obviously pissed off.

Windtalkers was terrible. I'm native, and I had a few asian friends watch the movie with me. We thought it would be a dream come true. Uh, no. This would be the first film of his that we didn't like.

What???
Mission Impossible 2 was the shit!!!
Yeah the doves were stupid to put in but the overall movie including the action kicked ass.
Especially the action sequences with Tom Cruise on the sport bike.

I thought that the new movie was AWESOME! It was just as good a Black Hawk Down. I thought that it was going to be bad (Captain Cornellies Mnadoline) but it was really good.

Yes there were people pointing guns at each other!

he helped produce it, but Antoine Fuqua directed it. Antoine Fuqua also directed a movie recently that was excellent: Training Day.

Hard Boiled owns the planet for me. I could watch that movie anytime and just be transfixed.

Windtalkers, from my POV, was a pretty solid film. Overall, I've hated the movies John Woo has made since he got to Hollywood, I would definitely say Windtalkers is the best he's done since he came to America. There's some genuine emotion in the movie, the war scenes are very intense, and he allows the main characters to be "action heroes" without doing anything way over the top or impossible. I had fears we'd see Nicholas Cage and his Indian sidekick with two guns in hand each, taking on swarms of Japanese troops. This never happens though, and like I said, you can tell Woo had a big emotional investment in the story. You can tell there was some massive influence from Saving Private Ryan though, kinda like Hard Boiled definitely gave off a T2-ish kinda vibe. I affectionately call the movie "Saving Private Whitehorse."

Overall solid, worth seeing, just don't expect miracles.

That motorcyle scene in MI2 was one of the Stupidest scenes in a movie of all time.

I think things went downhill for John Woo after he went to the US.

Hell, even Hard Boiled wasn't that great (his last HK movie I think) Sure, its good if all you want is a ton of gun fights, but that's just about it. Nothing really developed. And damn it, things even ended badly: A happy ending? What the hell? It was set up for a sad ending and then they throw on another scene at the end to make it happy? What were you thinking?!?!

I still have hope for his latest movie, even thought the reviews are bad. I better see Nick Cage or anyone in that movie run in the middle of the battlefield with two BARs though. :D

Anybody want to buy my Killer: Criterion Collection DVD? It's in darn mint condition, and about to go to ebay after much personal debate (Hardboiled is staying though ;) ).

Email if you want a picture.

And to contribute to this thread; I'm kind of John Woo'd out after following his movies for so long, but my favorites are Once a Thief, Better Tomorrow 2, Bullet in the Head, Hardboiled, and Heroes Shed no Tears.

John Woo's best works (Gold medal):

Killer
A Better Tomorrow

Silver medal:

Bullet in the head
Hard Boiled
Once a thief
A better tomorrow II

I don't like any of his US works.
MI 2 is a shitty movie
Action scenes aren't that great (just compare to his HK works and you'll know), stupid martial art fighting......

Only thing I love about the MI2 is the rock climbing at the beginning.

Yo Wasabi, Training Day is one of my new favorites recently. Denzel totally deserves the Oscar for that performance. I thought it was gonna be another black/white buddy cop film, but it was much, much deeper than that. I just love the unfolding storyline and plot twists. I don't know, it just seemed authentic.

John Woo had one rather good movie in the US; Face Off.

The rest have sucked balls.

Anyone who thinks MI2 is good work should go have their head checked. It was a let down for me since I am a John Woo fan. To put it quite simply, I fell asleep in the theater watching it.

His Hong Kong films blow away anything he has done in the US and probably will do. Unless he is re-united with Chow Yun Fat, I don't forsee him doing anything on the level he used to. But Chow Yun Fat is pretty much done in Hollywood I think.

John Woo turned into a money whore. Simple enough.

John Woo's US movies arent as bad as you make out, actors aside,Hard Target was an excellent film so was Broken Arrow (i like van damme anyway, so bite me). Hard Boiled is my favourite, i've never seen so much action on screen, one of the most exciting films ever.

They're bad compared to what he was doing in Hong Kong. None of his US stuff even touches A Better Tomorrow 1 & 2.

John Woo made the craziest movies in Hong Kong like "the killer" and "hardboiled". He should go back to china because he might have some inspiration to make another crazy gun-fu movie. I hated all the US titles except Face Off. The big hit was ok but only because it was funny.
