Ok, its insider crap only, but it just says Ps2's capabilities, dvd wise are much better than xbox's. And they even show pics comparing the two, and the xbox's look better, but they say the ps2 is better by a "hair" or some shit like that. What are your thoughts?

LMFAO!!!

The PS2 is the only "DVD player" I've ever used and I was completely honest when I said "What's the big deal with DVD players, they look the same as VHS", only to be laughed at by other members and told to get real.

The PS2 DVD player is a disgrace, so unbelievably sucky that even the word suck is ashamed to be associated with it.

If you're lucky enough to get the damn DVD to work the picture quality is awful, as is the search functions and switching between sections of the DVD. I only own Sony components, such as VCR, TV, reciever, and I was going to go with a Sony DVD player (obviously) if only because it matched my other components. Well, lets just say even their stand alone DVD players suck hard. Their drives literally crap out after six months of light use and Sony WILL NOT issue a recall because they say the cost to do so does not justify it. So that's it, all these little Sony bitches with worthless DVD players months after their purchase because Sony wants a $175 service fee to "fix" this problem (which will only surface again a couple more months down the road because of the piss-poor design of their players).

Imagine that, and Sony fanboys call Microsoft a crook.

My take, PS2 DVD playback provides a great picture using component cables but the sound is a lot lower than a normal DVD player. Also it is extremely buggy, I still have yet to play one movie from start to finish without something going wrong.

Xbox DVD playback was a lot smoother on some DVD's that were a little jumpy on PS2. Picture is darker though. Sound on Xbox blew PS2 out of the water, no question.

I also have Sony's DVP 7000 (their reference player intil they released the 7700). Of course this was the best at dvd playback but lacks DTS.

One thing to think about though is that a lot of people bash the Xbox and PS2 dvd playback because they run them through average TV's with composite cables, or haven't adjusted there TV's properly.
It really does make a big difference. Here is the equipment I used to test Xbox and Ps2 dvd playback with,

Sony KP53V80 TV
Denon AVR-4800
Denon POA 5200 amp for Back surrounds
Polk speaker system with all speakers timbre matched. with a 7.1 setup for Dolby Digital EX and DTS sound.

You get a DVD player to play DVDs. You get a video game consol to play video games. End of story.

Yeah, DVD players are really cheap now so just get a stand alone player for your DVD's. I am really surprised that DVD players have come down so far in price this soon in it's lifecycle.

When I mean cheap I am not talking about the ones you see at walmart for 100 bucks, I am talking about ones like this,

<a href="http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/consumer/ss5/home/dvd/dvdplayers/dvp-ns400d.shtml" target="_blank">http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/consumer/ss5/home/dvd/dvdplayers/dvp-ns400d.shtml</a>

When I mean cheap I mean that 250 or 300 is cheap compared to what some of the players used to cost. I paid 1,000 for my player back in 98.

Whatever. Been using VCRs for years. Then BAM PS2 comes with a DVD player in it! I use it, its fine, I'm not picky about DVD playback, it plays them, they still look and sound better and are cooler than VHS. No REAL need to fork out that 100 and up for a DVD player since I have one in the PS2. I'm fine with it.

I've never had a single problem with my PS2 DVD playback. Well, one actually. It rewinds and fast forwards WAY to slow. It's a big problem with movies with chapters that are too big. It takes forever to get to a scene I would want to see. Does that remote control you can buy for it help the speed problem?

Well, I've been using the PS2 to play DVD's for a while now and the playback is perfectly acceptable to me.
I also have an Xbox DVD remote and to be honest there is not that much difference.

One thing the PS2 does have over the Xbox, and this only applies to people with PAL (European/Australian machines), is its ability to handle an NTSC disc a lot better.
Its most noticable with Anime, where slow, steady panning across a scene is often used.
The Xbox has a tendancy to make the image 'judder' quite badly, whereas the PS2 shows no noticable problems like this. I found this when running region 0 DVD's like 'Burn-Up W' and the Slayers box-sets (no, not Buffy) on my Xbox.
Its similar to the judder you get when playing Halo in PAL-60 mode.

Personally there just isnt much in it as far as the picture quality is concerned, and as I watch a hell of a lot of Import (American) anime, the Xbox's judder is just way too aggrivating to compensate for the slightly nicer picture.

Oh yea - and anyone not already doing so might want to consider getting a scart lead and one of those region-X disks for their PS2. Gets rid of greenscreen and gives a much nicer picture.

I must be really bored today coz I wnt back and did a bit more testing. I have 2 copies of Geobreeders (yes its Anime) thanks to DVDplanet making some shipping mistake, so I put one in the Xbox and one is the PS2 - both consoles are connected Via SCART - so that should be the best possible picture output, and to the same telly via a scart-splitter box.
I paused the DVD's at exactly the same image on both machines.
By quickly swapping between both machines I could see that the PS2 has a very slightly lower quality picture than the Xbox - although the picture itself is brighter.
With cartoons you can see that the black outlines arround the characters seem to be more 'broken', especially if they are nearly horizontal on the screen.
I think that this is because of the PS2's lower resolution. The Xbox runs at 640x480 whereas the PS2 is 640x240 or something along those lines.

Basically - if you live in an NTSC region, or live in a PAL region and never import DVD's, then the Xbox is the better choice.
Also IGN are talking Bull - the only thing that makes the PS2 better for 'Mr normal Joe public' is that the PS2 plays DVD's straight out the box and has an optical output connection straight out the box, whereas if you wanted these with an Xbox you would have to shell out £40 extra.

Hang on - come to think of it thats a pretty good deal you get with a PS2.............

I have a Malata DVD player. It plays DVD, VCD, CD Audio, MP3 cd's, has DTS decoding, all regions and does PAL to NTSC conversion (and vice versa). It only cost $300 US. Everyone should get one.

Here it is:

<a href="http://www.nbtelectronics.com/" target="_blank">http://www.nbtelectronics.com/</a>

Linking direct doesn't work. Go to their store and click on DVD Players. You'll find it there. Prices are Canadian.

If you buy the Sony brand remote, it comes with a dvd program upgrade disc. The Disc fixes soooo many gliches that I had with the older program. I only have problems with games that are in "all" regions imported from Japan.

And don't think for a moment that this little "bug" wasn't really a "feature." :p

I'm not accusing anybody of anything; I'm just saying that the way of the world being as it is, Sony has a vested interest in keeping their system incompatible with "Region 0" DVD's in even the most subtle fashion.
