Through my experiences helping a game store and stories told by friends I have heard some rather hillarious "ghetto slang" names for various video game products...

Saturn = Satur N
PSone = P zone
Controller = buttons or joypad
NES & SNES games = video game carts
Resident Evil = Residential Evil
Xenogears = X-no gears

...or the famous "do you have Mario" for one Sega system or another...

...and of course, SNK = sink...

...does anyone else have wonderful mainstream (I just don't know) experiences?

I know people who call the NSES the "senes".

My brother in law calls SNK "snick" but I am pretty sure he know better and is just making fun of it. He hates 2D fighters.

You hit on some of the ones I remember from working in a game store. I'd also like to add:

"Intendo 64"
"Dreamcaster"
"Dreamscape"

And a dozen odd other mispronunciations of the word Dreamcast..

Also call the Dreamcast the "Dreamgash".

And some off-topic ones: Netscape=Nutscrape/Nutscoop Explorer :)
Pizza Hut=Pizza Slut
McDonald's=McDick's
KFC=JFC(guess what the J means)

I always think it's funny that some people (more along the lines of a non-gamer or parent) calling any cartridge-based games "tapes".

Maybe not videogame slang, though :)

You know, I work in a gamestore and it took me a good 5 minutes on the phone with somebody to realize what he meant by "paddles". I just haven't heard that used since 1986.

SNES= Es Ness
Gamecube= Xbox (yes, somebody actually called a Gamecube the Xbox)
Ikaruga= Radiant Silvergun 2
Dragonball Z: Budokai= Dragonballs: Budokai
Tekken 4= Tekki
Memory Card= Diskette

Theres a lot more I'm not remembering at the moment.

Well, I was about 15-16 at the time, and
the 64 had just hit the market. I was in
line for a game and I heard this rather
unsightly woman screaming "hey you! you
got dem super maario brothers for that
there nes?" I just stared in awe, my eyes
locked on this beast of a woman butchering
the english language. The clerk turns,
looks at her and turns around again. I
started laughing at this point, but she
was not. Instead she practically hopped
over the counter and grabbed his shirt.
Started yelling at him and he was just
smiling, she stopped and he said " do
you see any nes products in our cases?"

Woman : "Well nah, nah."

Clerk: "Well, so glad we know your eyes
are working, perhaps a class in
common sense would be nice?"

Woman : "*face goes red* I want to see
your manager!"

Clerk: "Ok, let me go get him." * looks
around * "Sorry, he's not around
right now. You should try again
later, maybe we'll have some of
those "maario brothers" in then."

Man, I swear I thought that woman was going
to bust a vein and beat him within an inch
of his life, but man was I dying laughing.

I've seen some funny stuff in my time, but
it was like watching Clerks at walmart. So
funny.

My dad still calls all video games "Mario Bros."

I tend to pronounce out NES as "ness" still.

Depending on the day I'll call the SNES either "Super Nintendo" or "Super Ness"

I correct people when they call the Genesis the "Sega" because I think it unfairly cuts out the Master System (boy, that's a geeky thing to do, I know).

I call the Neo Geo the "Neo".

Why do I think this is so funny? I was cracking up over that...

Um... from the earlier days... if you played Nintendo with a girl, you would ask her... do you play with a Pad or Joystick lol.

also the classic.... instead of gyromite... gyrate or gyrate mate...

I live in the south so you know the videogame slang is probably the worst here. Some of my cousins called the game itself "tapes" even if its a CD!!! They pronounce Mortal Kombat as "Morta Kombak". oh yeah "ST" words here come out as "SK" so Street Fighter becomes "Skreet Fighter". Killer instinct becomes "Killa Eenstincts(long "e")". They call Controllers either "paddles" or "joysticks" and when they see a real joystick/arcadestick the usual reaction is "damn look at that thing, whats that?". Oh yeah and some of my aunts refer to all my systems as "nintendo". When my mom gets pissed off at me despite her being a game collecter her damn self she'll say "pick up them darn nintendo controllers up off the ground" when ironically my Agetec stick and Tekken 4 hori stick are laying on the ground. And finally when people here wanna play some videogames they say "hey, lets play the game".

There are the people that come into the place I work at and ask for "That new portable Playstation Advance thing"... it stil amazes me how so many people collectively call any video game stuff "Playstation" these days :rolleyes:

Then there was my friend who always insisted in calling Yoshimitsu from Tekken "YOKIMITSU"... along with a lot of other stuff he used to say... I think he only did it to be annoying though.

Paddles.

And just a little aside, I'm still looking for a copy of Shenumi (made by Sega, takes place in Japan) - if anyone has one for sale, let me know.

Heh my cousin used to call him "Yoshimu" and it would drive me and my brother up the wall. He also used to called Kazuya "Kazuma". We used to ask him "where in the hell did you get the "m" from in Kazuya?". However the most annoying was my friend who'd pronounce Hwoarang's name as "Gwanang". In tekken 3 the announcer says his name the way it would be said in Korean and he says it kinda fast to so for some reason my friend thought he said "Gwanang" and would get an attitude with us if we corrected him and he swore that was his real name until he played tekken tag and heard the "H".

I'm still looking for a copy of Shenumi (made by Sega, takes place in Japan) - if anyone has one for sale, let me know.
Didn't the same people who made Shenumi make "Virtual Fighters".

My father used to call the games I played "Bang-Bang Shoot 'em ups" This was back in the early 80's when he was trying to get me to play more text adventures because he was convinced shoot em ups were rotting my mind.

I am absolutely convinced that he had a hand in coining the term "shoot em up."

While on the sub-subject of parents and videogames, some just cant grasp it.

I give my dad the controller and he starts turning the whole thing in the air as if he'd be better off with one of those mid 90's motion sensitive pads!!
