What game do you think really captured the essence of it's former self, while still enjoying the technology of today?

Was it:

1. Shin Contra

2. Rygar

3. Shinobi

4. Metroid Prime

How about the worst?

Discuss...... spock

Metroid Prime. Several times within the game I was having serious flashbacks to Super Metroid. The atmosphere, the art direction, the general flow of the game, all harken back to Super Metroid, and yet excel in everyway possible. Shin Contra comes in at a close second.

Rygar and Shinobi have too many gameplay and mechanical changes, especially Rygar.

I would have to say Shinobi for sure. It plays like a 2-D game....IT PLAYS EASY. Plus it actually was fun to play whil still providing a challenge with influences by older games and new gameplay ideas. It also keeps the gameplay elements of the shurikens and swords. Great game!!

Rygar and Contra are second...

While Metroid Prime goes to fourth because while it looked nice, Samus was never ever meant to go into first person and they actually had to take out gameplay elements from Super Metroid. Where's the screw attack??? Oh yea I forgot, there was none because you can't do that in first person view. What a great idea! angry

I believe that while Metroid Prime definitely captured the essence of Metroid well, it didn't feel exactly the same playing in 1st person. Not that Prime isn't a wonderful game, it just doesn't feel very "retro." Contra recaptured every bit of 2d goodness that was had in the original and exploded it a hundred fold for the 128 bit era, while still keeping the "retro" feeling.

You always seem to complain about the screw attack. It's not that important to Metroid that you need to bring it up, and only it, everytime you complain about the game, Captain. wink

Best pure 're-hash'? Contra. Feels directly minted from the old games...only with added vicious difficulty to keep the noobs away.
Good shit.

The best of the pack would still be Metroid Prime though. I am a 2D lover at heart, but I can't lie about feeling like MP is the way Metroid was truly meant to be...the atmosphere and mood in this game is unmatched, and the gameplay is fucking tops. Wickedly awesome. 3D is just fine when the developers take this much care to retain what makes a game special while infusing it with so much new life.

Rygar is the weakest of the pack. The game is just too bloody easy.

Well, here are mine:

1. Shin Contra: Pure old-school goodness, with wonderful art and music direction (Thank you Akira Yamoka!).

2. Warrior of Argus (Rygar): Very nice indeed, and the ambiance adds a true historical feeling to the whole experience.

3. Shinobi: Playes well, but was just a dissapointment. Horrible music, and poor execution of some great ideas.

4. Metroid Prime: It was made by some folks in Texas, with only a small Japanese staff. Need I say more?

Shin Contra: Konami's lil thank you to gamers of old and to make up for those two psx games.

Shinobi: A 2d game that made it in the 3d world, while those fags at team ninja still have pixel boobs on the brain Sega's showing em how it's done.

Metroid Prime:So this is how Metroid was ment to be

Rygar: A trip back to histroy class only to find out you're in the remideal course

I guess what he is trying to get across is that he feels screwed since there is no screw attack.
Kind of sounded funnier when it first poped into my head. Oh well1 oh_no

Well, this is going back quite a bit (for both games), but I'd have to pick Ray-Tracers, which is basically a re-hash of Chase HQ.
OK so its not quite a re-hash as its a different name and uses different characters, but its basically the same idea, same company, and it recaptured the fun of the first game, something which Chase HQ 2 failed to do.

OK, and none of those games listed has made it to the UK yet - damn those slow PAL conversions :D
