Is it just me or are complete and mint SNES games hard as nails to come by?

I've narrowed my collecting choices down to three consoles for the moment. The SNES, Saturn, and Dreamcast. Unfortunately though, it seems like I've come to a road block when it comes to the SNES.

My original plan was to collect complete SNES carts, but after browsing eBay, I couldn't find one single game I was looking for that was complete. I know that collecting is all about finding the games you want no matter what, but this seems crazy.

I mean, did everyone throw away their SNES game boxes and manuals? Should I make an exception to the SNES and just collect bare carts?

What games are you looking for? When I collected SNES games I found it pretty easy to find complete games I was looking for. A pretty penny has to be paid for some of them though.

Seems liuke those cardboard boxes were a paimn to keep in good condition, the people i know with snes collections have the same thing, mostly just carts no instructions or boxes.

What, no NEO GEO?

I never liked the SNES, but I ran into similar trouble looking for Genesis stuff on ebay. Like you said, complete and mint games with the boxes and manuals are hard to find, usually the games are just tattered old cartridges only.

From what I've seen, no one really gives a shit about the old 16-bit generation games, and theres piles and piles lying around all over the place, used and thrown away like garbage.
I went to my local Funcoland the other day, and when I asked where they kept their genesis games, the employee showed me a wobbly little stand holding about a dozen or so beat up, dirty and abused loose carts. Just the carts, nothing else. I could've bought all of them with a few bucks, but I refused to. Looking around, I could only see the latest PS2, GC, and XB games lining the shelves, shining and overstocked.

Pardon my rant, but seeing how neglected the old games of yesteryear are now, makes me upset.
Its just the way games are, I guess. Out with the old, in with the new... crying

When I worked for Funcoland a few years ago, excess cases and books that weren't being used as display boxes got chucked in the trash :( .

Japanese Super Famicon seem to be easier to get ahold of complete in box. The domestic titles can be found, but it's a chore doing so, not to mention if you do find something you want CIB, it sometimes is incredibly fucked up and not even worth buying.

SNES was hot when I was a kid, so all of my SNES owning friends, being children, saw no value in keeping useless boxes around (or their parents just chucked them). We did find it important to keep carts clean and the platic slips were fine enough.

Genesis was a different story though as to keep them nice and clean, we needed to keep them in the included cases(which kept the instructions safe as well).

THAT, and I think more older teens/young adults/adults owned SEGAs rather than SNESs(sports games). This group generaly keeps their games in better complete shape, or have less time to ruin them.

SNES was a slightly younger demographic where I came from.

These loose facts are just based around my youth experiences with the snes, and the SECOND BEST SYSTEM EVAH; the SEGA Genesis.

Anyone need a copy of Trouble Shooter Complete.

Well it depends on the game I guess.

There's always a ton you can fin in ebay by typing in the string:

"SNES" "Mint"

My personal favourite is "SFC" "Import" for tons of Super Famicom games.

Yeah, they are very hard to come by. It's mainly because they were just so hard to keep in good shape. The only "mint" SNES game I have right now is a SFC copy of Chrono Trigger.

So what do you guys think? Should I just collect bare carts instead? Honestly, If I were to try and get every single game I wanted for the SNES in complete and mint condition, I'd probably never find every game I wanted.

I say narrow it down to the game, like do you want a bare cart for Secret of Evermore or the whole set? That's what I'm doing I get the whole set for some games while it's the loose carts for others

Very good idea Burnout. I think I'll only buy complete games if there's one available on eBay at the time I'm looking for it. Otherwise, bare carts will suit me just fine as long as the label is still in great condition. Thankfully, the Nintendo store still sells those great plastic cart covers so my bare carts will look even better.

SNES collecting just got cheaper and easier! It's time to rock! buttrock buttrock

Yes, collect bare carts instead.
It's very hard to find SNES games in complete and mint condition. (If you can find 'em, how much do you expect to pay for things like Chrono or Uncharted Waters: NH),and also a pain to keep them in shape.
I collect bare SNES carts only + some complete SFC games:

SNES

What I need right now is the SFC unit. Anyone selling?

I used to take alot crap back in the day because I keeped my SNES game boxes, I even kept the little bag that the carts came in. People used to tell me that they was no use in keeping the boxes because the games will never be worth nothing. But years later I see the kind of shape the SNES the games are at funcoland and I am gald I did. I once got a offer of $75.00 for my Link to the Past cart and I only paid $10.00 on clearace for it at Walmart. So that goes to show don't aways listen to what people tell you.

This is quite correct. A few years ago I got into a collecting binge for NES, SNES, and Genesis games. I checked out quite a few different Funcolands while searching out titles, and ended up rescuing quite a few NES and SNES boxes from many different stores. Basically I'd take a bunch of boxes to the counter (to buy the actual games), and more often than not the employees would say they didn't have those games. So I'd ask to have the boxes, and they usually said go ahead and take them.

While talking with the employees, I learned that literally THOUSANDS of boxes were TRASHED (probably more like tens of thousands) from the hundreds of funcoland stores across the U.S. They didn't have "space" for them, so stupidly RUINED the value of tens of thousands of games by CHUCKING the boxes that they came in. If that isn't completely retarded . . . they basically were throwing money away, since we all know that complete boxed games are worth way more than bare carts. Idiots . . . oh_no

Most of my 30 something SNES games are complete, the box, however, are usually not mint (the cart/docs are easy to keep mint)....

The main reason why they didn't leave the games in the cases was theft and storage issues. Also, Funcoland used to perform daily counts on carts and systems so the carts had to be out of box and in drawers.

The store I worked at was an exception in regards to back room space but there's been some Funcos I've helped opened that had back rooms the size of a closet. I've also ran afoul of my fair share of Funco employees/store management who didn't care diddly squat about game boxes and saw them as garbage taking up space.

My suggestion to Earthquake is if you're looking for alot of titles, then go cart only. If you've got a narrowed down list then see if you can find them CIB. There's a few games for SNES I'm trying to hunt down still and would happily settle for good condition cart only if they were to be had at all loco (Aero Fighters, Wild Guns).

I only collect snes games with AT LEAST the box, for me that's a big part of the fun, to read what's written on it and to see some in game shots. It's also about memories, standing in the game shop, looking at all those great boxes of great games you were never able to buy :)

But I don't find it that hard to collect them in complete condition.. Problem is that they're a bit expensive these days.

Which games are you looking for btw ?

the same could be said for the nes and n64 as for example the other day i went to funcoland and bought guilty gear xx and the person in front of was trading in complete n64 games and instead of keeping the boxes and manual and the game holder they just kept the game and trew away the rest.and this is the main reason i think it is very hard to find complete games like that especially the blockbuster exclusive 1's like final fight guy for the snes

If you need to play JP SFC games on a US SNES, it is relatively easy to buy a Game Genie and hack off the top part of it with a saw (the other part is a plastic hinge which you can take off easy). Or you can modify your system as shown in gamesx.

Last I checked you can pick up a Game Genie for $14 or less. It's relatively easy to play imports with the hacked-GG until you have the extra cash for a JP system :)

The main games I'm currently looking for are:

Final Fight 1, 2, 3
Saturday Night Slam Masters
Mortal Kombat 1 and 2
Fatal Fury 1, 2, Special
Art of Fighting 1 and 2
R-Type 3
Sunset Riders

I'm still not quite sure about which road to take though. Complete or at least boxed SNES games look great on a shelf, but loose carts are easy as pie to find. crying
