My dad was in japan for about a week, then he went to korea for a few days, and while he was in japan he picked up Ikaruga for me.

I got it, played it last night...

i was fuckin BLOWN AWAY. eek!

I had so much fun playing this, i've only gotten to the third level, but christ it's so much fun!

it's hard as balls though...

i think the black/white is really really innovative, and the game's music is INCREDIBLE!

graphics are very good too... As always, with dreamcast VGA. i like the vertical mode option, i turned my 20" VGA and it's beautiful...

Incredible game...

BUT! i would REALLY like to know what everyone thinks is wrong with it, cause i've heard a lot of negative things about it.

I'm not a big shooter buff; In fact, this is probably the only shooter i own.

mmmmmmm......... Ikaruga... loco loco

I think it's pretty wonderful.

Maybe all the hype dulled people.

I think the game is great as well.

Tough as hell, great visuals, great music, you can't get much better than that.

I do like the game, but there are some things that i like in a shooter that are (or not) present in Ikaruga

1) I like powerups. It makes gameplay more rewarding, and more adrenaline fueled.. When the next shot takes you out and you lose your hard earned powerups, the sweaty palms come into play.

2) The puzzle sections are IMO dull beyond belief! change color, navigate some blocks, change color, navigate some more blocks...i want to shoot stuff, not play kurushi: mental blocks.

3) The intrusive boarders. OK, so you can tip your screen on the side to make them go away. What rationale, I-love-my-TV types are going to want to do that? especially as my tv has all action figures/game boxes/ tv aerial on top of it. A mode to disable boarders would be more than welcome, even if it did affect picture quality slightly.

Still , it is a very good game, and not without it's moments, but it certainly wasn;t the 2nd coming it was made out to be. Thunderforce IV still owns in my book for 2d shootin'. :D

The people who say much of anything negative about Ikaruga are most likely just not fans of the genre. Plain and simple.

People who play shooters are a different breed of gamer in my opinion. Ikaruga, just as any shooter which is well designed, is meant to be played for score--and prefereably off one credit. I think the skill involved to score big as well as the fact that it's a short play (nothing new here as far as shooters go), turns the masses off to it as a whole.

Me, I fucking love Ikaruga. It's just such a well designed game and it's so much fun to play. The thing I find so great about Ikaruga though is that it can be played thoughtfully (combos, etc.) or you can just blast through it if you feel like doing so. It's such a great blend of the two types of gameplay commonly seen in shmups.

So... excellent game. No complaints here. buttrock

Whoever these naysayers are...they obviously don't have eyes. Its a fantastic shooter, definitely one of the best I've ever played (Mars Matrix being my all-time favorite).

one of the best games i've ever played, shooter or otherwise. who complains about this game? labradors? pieces of wood?

anyone with the ability to handle a controller should recognize this game as a classic...

This'll be the equivalent of a fart in church, but call me a wooden labrador...I thought Ikaruga was beautiful but dull. I don't enjoy the whole 'minimalist' modern shooter movement, with simple bombs and very basic weaponry. I like a shooter with lots of powerups and different weapons to pick from. I still find Radiant Silvergun to be a much more enjoyable shooter than it's newer half-brother. Don't get me wrong, Ikaruga is really pretty, and sports one of the finest soundtracks ever...it just isn't my bag when it comes to shooting. I prefer vertical shooters like Soukyougurentai and Dodonpachi.

Perhaps when it arrives for the Cube I'll give it another roll and see if I can see what you guys do in it....

I was just glad to see that DC has it's own RADIANT SILVERGUN now! wink
And ZERO GUNNER 2 would be it's THUNDERFORCE 5.... :D

Now,if there had just been MORE shooters released...then in 2-3 years we had the Saturn-collecting all over again-with DC! :)

Joseph, what is your avatar/sig exactly? Where's that from? I've always wondered that.

Me-"I'll take movie trivia for $800, Alex."

Alex-"This was the name of the protagonist of Martin Scorcese's movie, played by Robert De Niro and set in a dark dystopian New York City in the 70's, Taxi Driver."

Me-"Uh... Who is Travis Bickle?"

Alex-"That's correct!"

Heh heh. Sorry to butt in, I just wanted to make a joke... loco
I'll be going now...

The biggest problem with Ikaruga, is that it wasn't released in North America!

I'll have to hunt down a copy sometime soon.

Mr Monk - It's coming out here you know!

Plisken - I don't see how you could complain about the border. If they took that out it wouldn't be a very loyal arcade translation! It's either have a border, or see less than you're supposed to, or have the game changed. You could always get a bigger TV!

I thought it was great when I played it. From what I could tell, it has to be one of the best shooters. I love shooters with no power ups. RS was one of my favorites because of the way the levels were designed, the lack of power ups, and the weapon system. Ikaruga maintains the great design while making the weapon system simpler. Simpler is not necessarily worse in this case... Just different. I love some shooters, but hate many that people think are classics. I really loathe the whole Giga Wing/Mars Matrix series. GW and MM are tied for my least favorite shooters ever... Too much to collect! Too much reliance on the absorbing! I want beautiful patterns...!

IMO, the reason why the hype surrounding Ikaruga died off quickly is the radical game design. The game is really a puzzle-shooter, and that and the non-existent powerups was not what some ppl expected.

I like the game, but it's not my favourite of the genre. It looks and sounds brilliant, but as others already said, I really like to collect powerups and get some bigass shot on my ship. Stuff like Strikers 1945 II, Gunbird 2 or Mars Matrix and the two Giga Wings are shooters after my taste, insane number of powerups and bullets, and, in case of MM, a very, very cool bullet-sucking and shop system. I also love all the various Raiden games (specially Raiden Trad on Genny), Xevious, Sonic Wings 2, ASO II, M.U.S.H.A... mostly old-style straight-forward collect & shoot shmups.

That's pretty much my sentiment to a T. Ikaruga just doesn't grip me. And it's no big deal - Treasure makes a lot of great games, but it's not like they have to always make great games and the world ends when they don't. wink

I love 19XX, which is a relatively unknown Capcom shooter on CPS2 only. Man, if there was any game that I wish I had on a home console, that's it. 7 years overdue.
