Not folk for me,
more of a renaissance touch, to my liking.
I can't stand very colorful works, just dont like them.
If there were more of the classical art they have showcased in museums being worked on today, there would be some much more enjoyable works.
I mean look at van gogh's blue period, he got depressed and made some of the most horrific and real to life beautiful works known to man.
I dislike the styles they have today they lack that extra element that made you "think" when viewing them.
I guess its all a matter of opinion.
Nothing is more enjoyable then classical music, (motzart bach etc.)
While your walls are aligned with classical art, a little into the past.
Gives you a view of the way others conceived the times.

Van Gogh wasn't a renaissance artist and the majority of his works were very colourful. U spouting crap again LWK ? Also Van Gogh was an impressionist and his works were bold and in your face which is why almost anyone can point out his style.

YES BUT HIS BLUE PERIOD IS WHAT HE IS RENOWNED FOR.
I do like renaissance art alot they have a very diferent outlook to human impression.
As far as imprssionists go I must admit I am impressed you even new what I was speaking of.
Good show.
Van goghs brother died after can gogh shot himself in the head. The sad thing is, it took time for him to die.
Soon after they say his brother (painted the house of friends) died of a broken heart.
Sad story, but its true.
I mean look at salvador dali, they said his paintings where god sends.
He ate his own excrement, the thing with these artist is almost ALL suffered emotional distress, I do beleive its because they lived lonely lives, like when Van Gogh cut off his ear and sent to his girl.
TRULY SICK!
They all are remembered though!

I prefer pointilism and dadaism myself.

Pointilist because they were the forerunners to digital art.

Dadas because of their playfulness, randomness, and pioneering spirit.

It still amazes me now how Escher drew those shapes, forms and patterns without a computer. His curled up insect, I think was one of his finest albiet probably his least technical.

Actually one of my favourite artists is Mark Rothko - I think you can get some of his prints at IKEA!!! Very very simple works that are all about texture and colour. Check it out next time you go to Ikea!

My father is an artist, he named me after "Eugene Delacaux". Who happens to be my favourite artist.

All those purple and green skies, and the wild animals and cavalry officers.
I love his formal, classical style.

Love sculpture as well!
M.Angelos work with stone is my favourite. (Don't like the Cistene chapel though!)

Could look at Classical Greek and Roman art all day and night! its all just fab!

Hey Dog, this is something you might be able to answer. Seems that in any medium, there are certain urban legends that float around. One that my art teacher told me years ago was that Van Gogh painted "Starry Night" while locked up in an asylum, yet when a star chart for that period is blown up to proportion, the stars line up exactly. Is that true? I have tried to find correlation for this story, but found only that he was indeed locked up at the time he painted it.

Heh I also like the TRUE story that dali used to cut off his hair and use it for moustache extensions, hence is fab tash!

Impressionists are my thing. In particular, Monet, Degas, Van Gogh... I love their colors... they're so rich. It's also quite original how they turn a blob into an object...
I also love art nuveau... Alphonse Mucha... I'm not sure if Erte goes into this genre, but... I love Mucha's style to death. How he did hair and clothes, how they flowed. I spend a lot of my time trying to emulate that. And Erte, he was damn original with outfits. I don't know how he got some of his ideas to make clothes fold in whichways >_<
There are others, but these are the ones who really stand in my mind.

BTW, I think most "true" artists out there ARE crazy. I just get that impression... most artists tend to be outcasts...

I'm really feeling out of my element after reading all these educated responses on art. As much as I like to draw and color and ink and all that, I don't know jack shit about any art history. Some of the names sound familiar, but that's about the extent of my knowledge when it comes to the historical aspect of art.

If I were to say what type of art I liked, the list would stream for hundreds of names of artists, but here's a few that really stand out:

Richard Corben: This man is a demigawd in my book. You have to see his work to believe it. It's so realistic, yet exaggerated, his works are contradictions executed to perfection. Some of his more popular works are the original Bat Out of Hell album cover for Meatloaf, and the Den stories that ran for years in Heavy Metal.

Robert Crumb: The "Keep On Truckin'" guy himself. Famous for his cross-hatching style, and not to mention his loving portrayals of girls with huge asses, this guy is everywhere and no where at once. Even though his work really lost a lot of it's witty and sarcastic edge in the last few years, it's still amazing to look at. Go and rent the movie "Crumb" for a crash course on his life and works.

And a few others:
John Howard-Artist and writer of "Horny Biker Slut". Love his girls...
Tim Vigil-Artist of Faust, EO, Night Master, Grips, etc etc
Wong Yuk Long-aka Tony Wong. Go and hunt down all his English comics from the late 80's and early 90's. Beautiful stuff!
Tetsuo Hara-Like you haven't heard of this guy...
Masashi Tanaka-GON! Love that little dinosaur, and his renderings of wildlife and nature are second to none...

I better stop here. I have to go to bed sometime tonight! <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">
