What do you think of this game? What do you like about it and what do you dislike/hate about it?

Recently I got it and must say while I find it to be a good addition to the genre, I feel a little bit let down by the experience. The bosses are a little generic in my opinion. Sure they're deadly but quite frankly, I find it hard to remember what they all looked like right now. (and I just played it today...) Perhaps "unmemorable" is the word...

However, the chaining system is cool, and the bullet dodging is intense.

I hope to develop more of a passion toward it in the coming days as I play it more.

One last question, what do you think about Saturn DonPachi and is it worth picking up if one already has DoDonPachi and found DDP to be just above average? (like me)
But for now, I think DoDonPachi is enough for my blood.

I really like DoDonpachi, it's one of my favorite Saturn shooters. The thing I like most about it is how fast paced it is. It always keeps you on your toes. The chain combo feature is good idea too and I think adds some replay value to the game. I don't think the bullet dodging is that intense. Just stay near the bottom of the screen during heavy fire and the bullets will spread out enough to easily dodge them. My only complaint about the game is that the Saturn version looks a little grainy when compared to the arcade verstion.

DoDonpachi is a superb game. I love the idea of the huge beam you get and your bomb is sickening. I love just wiping the screen from left to right. This is a great port of the game. Better loading than Donpachi. I would say to play it more. It is a great game. No game gives you a beam like you have in this game, plus you get plenty of powerups and the music is top-notch.

so, i really dig the vibe to this game.
i'd bought it, but traded it pretty quickly to snk4ever [rip steve] because it was just too easy. the game was no challenge. none. 0. zilch.

it was like a free ride man.

i can't play games that are that easy. it just gets boring.

still, the art, sound, everything is really well done. the gameplay could sure use some tweaking though.

there's just nothing to conquer.

i need a gradius to be happy.

gradius IV for example; aka, the game no one can beat.

even the bullet dodging was very easy. maybe it's because i'm a genius. or maybe its because i've been playing mars matrix, hoping to unlock every single extra [something i dont think has ever been done yet without cheating]

awesome game though! it seems like a true ARCADE game. another awesome saturn title...too bad i sold mine. frown

Agreed - DoDonpachi is an excellent shooter. Although the sound is pretty poor and the graphics plain, the link system for scoring really gives the game an extra edge. I particularly like the fact that the game has no pretensions about it, unlike titles like Soukyugurentai or Radiant Silvergun. You get huuuge powerups, and blast everything in your path - full stop. The fact that your ship has a tiny hit box means that there is always a way out of the most impossible looking situations, which keeps the player in a state of exhilaration...

Good stuff!

Steve, if you like dodonpachi then you'll like donpachi. Well, you'll still compare those two and Dodonpachi surpasses first one in many ways.

If the price is right, then go for it.

I got both games at really good deal.

I love the boss fights in the game, it's not really the graphics that I remember, just their patterns, what to do, etc.

BTW, damn Kid Aphex, DDP is easy? You must got the skills! I narrowly missed one crediting the final boss by |------| much life (more or less). Maybe someday I'll get to the second loop boss, lol wink

We should have a high score thread or something for this game, and April 10th for Dai-Ou-Jou buttrock

I can only vouch for the arcade version, and for a PCB it has the best rockin music ever , particualarly the awsome first level (second is good, but no so...).

I would call it a rock n roll shooter, and the best of its genre.

I play it for the music and explosions only.

Well, I got a chance to play more of it today. I found myself enjoying it a lot more this time around. My favorite levels are probably the early ones, as it is, because in the later levels it becomes SO FREAKIN' manic I resort to "bomb feasting."

I also feel the earlier levels have a better atmosphere/aura than the later levels, dunno exactly why I feel this way but I just do.

It's a very good shooter no doubt, but I've personally played better. Still, a very worthy addition to any shmup fan with a Saturn, and since it's short, it's ideal for gamers who don't have the time to sit down and play a shooter like, say, Radiant Silvergun.

Does that mean you got through both loops on one credit? That's where the real challenge is.

The whole trick to scoring well is laying off using those bombs. Every time you reach maximum, the point multiplier goes up. That's where the true replay value comes in it for me personally, although I do get to a point in the game where I need to use a bomb, I'm just not that good!

I would like to add that I have been playing Dai Ou Jou in the arcade, and it rocks. It plays like the former two, but with more insane graphics and enemy design. Import it if you can.

I was thinking the same thing man. Seriously this game is easy. I have no problem just inserting another credit wink . I can get to level 1-5 on one credit.

Steve: If you like DDP I would recomend that you get DonPachi. Not only is it a good shooter, but you will apreciate the sequal more. I dont have the Saturn version, so I cannot speak for the sound, but the PCB definatly has good sound.

BTW about how much is DonPachi for the Saturn?

EDIT: I just found a review saying that you get 9 credits for DDP on the Saturn! eek_2
That is just crazy. I can beat it in 3 credits (almost 2). I think that 5 should have been the normal credit setting.

Anyways, have fun and challange yourself Steve.

BTW, what is everyone's record on chaining hits in DoDonPachi?

I've heard 800+ is feasible. GOOD GRIEF!

So far, my max is 111.

Sometimes DDP's chaining reminds of super combos found in "VS." games. You know, how you see the consecutive hit number go up quickly -- 1, 2, 3, etc...

Right now I am working on DonPachi and Chaining Techniques (which is increadibly more difficult than DDP) and have about 53 chain on that (luck, pure luck).

I recall getting close to 200 for DDP but I could be wrong . . .

If you asked BBH that is a diferent thing all together wink

That is correct (and a bit rediculous as well), but Saturn mode gives you unlimited continues iirc, but I never play that mode. Unless you want to see the "final" boss (Queen Bee).

As for chaining is concerned, I think I've netted over 400 (mostly because of the 5th stage), but I'll double check that when I get home.

I don't even remember what my best chain is on DoDonPachi, but it wasn't THAT great... I think I BS'ed a 450 or so on Stage 5 using the Type-C ship. I've still never been able to completely chain the entire 2nd stage, even though I've played it a shitload of times and watched the Japanese recordings...

hell, the MAME recording of "Aichi-Ken" getting 753 million on DoDonPachi is hands-down the most fucking insane thing I've ever seen in my life. Finishes both loops on one credit, and doesn't lose any lives until the last form of the Queen Bee. didn't use any bombs either until... 2-6 I believe?

Is that at MARP?

No, it was on another site... I can't seem to remember where the Aichi-Ken recording is, but there's another recording by a player named "pu." who finishes both loops with... well, 753 million

http://www.ah.wakwak.com/~pachipro/per/replay/replay.html

you're going to need MAME32 0.37 Beta 13 to play it back though, that can be found on MARP under the "get MAME" link if you search for a recording done with that version...

898-hit chain!!!
