But if you don't want to shell out 600$, or steal it, Paint Shop Pro is a pretty good alternative.

Paint Shop Pro 7 is absolutely FANTASTIC. Overall I MUCH prefer it to Photoshop, it has tons of great features and is much easier to use than Photoshop. You can't go wrong, especially considering its low price (about $90).

MS Paint
Adobe Photoshop 5.0 LE (LIMITED edition, as in limited features    . No history, no skew/distort, can only undo one at a time (gotta save often), almost no shortcuts (like ctrl+t))

Photoshop 7
Illustrator 9 (I even have version 10 installed, I just don't use it for some reason)
3D Studio Max

I use these to create and/or edit graphics/photos, however I use a wider range of programs such as Combustion, Premiere, and Flash for various other things.

I don't know what kinda of stuff you'll be painting, but bar none go with Painter 7 (think that's the most current ver). All the stuff Photoshop has, but WAY better brusheS and color controls. I think it's an all around better paint program for creating art than Photoshop.

Photoshop = good for editing images
Painter = good for creating images.

Adobe Photoshop 7 and ImageReady.

I also use, of all things, Corel Photo House 2.1, but only for certain tasks.
