i just found out about this yesterday and I was wondering if they cut any shit as well.

they're also going to kill Kiki's Delivery Service and Castle in the Sky.

<a href="http://disney.go.com/disneyvideos/animatedfilms/miyazaki/index2.html" target="_blank">http://disney.go.com/disneyvideos/animatedfilms/miyazaki/index2.html</a> is the official site of those three movies.

I saw it in theaters quite a while ago. Seemed to be intact. I have not heard much about the actual JP release but the US one was spectacular. Everything seemed to flow correctly in my opinion. Didn't seem cut, mauled or mangled. Is it getting a full blown US theatrical release or is it commercials for the DVD?

I just ordered copies of The Legend of Zu and Shaolin Soccer so I could see the non-mangled versions before they hit the US.

Disney got harrassed (prior to the release of) the Princess Mononoke DVD, so they went ahead and included both the high-end US dubbing (voice acting directed by John Lasseter -director of the Toy Storys) and the original Japanese track with subtitles.

According to the Disney website it will include English Literal Translation Subtitles" as an option:
<a href="http://disney.go.com/disneyvideos/animatedfilms/miyazaki/index2.html" target="_blank">http://disney.go.com/disneyvideos/animatedfilms/miyazaki/index2.html</a> (click on DVD specs)

The fan response to their final release of Princess Mononoke was positive... So I think there's nothing to be too worried about this time

They actually bought the rights to KiKi's Delivery Service as a part of a deal with Miyazaki (who's surprisingly ambivalent about the dubbing) for the initial US release of Princess Mononoke. The released it well before Princess Mononoke ever went on DVD, so any errors that still exist are probably because there had yet to be a major fan response.

Again, Disney realizes that there's a LOT of profit to made by appealing to the die-hard anime crowd.

While I wouldn't put it past Disney to fuck up HK films, I know that 'Spirited Away' has not been alrtered or edited in any way.

Disney actually did an awesome job with the US language track, but not only did they do an English dub, but they rel;eased the original Japanese language version into limited theatrical release as well.

The animation people at Disney actually revere Miyazaki and championed him to Disney's execs, and there are many people at disney that have a tremendous amount of respect for the man.

So as far as 'Spirited Away' goes, no, there were no changes or tampering with Miyazaki's film.

As far as Totoro and Mononoke Hime go, no these too are intact and complete as well (although I don't believe that Totoro is available in it's original Japanese languge version)

And one more thing-

Although I'd say there are some exceptions, I see nothing wrong with creating a new language track for local audiences when it comes to animation, as long as it's as high quality a production as the original language track.

I mean, even the original language track is 'dubbed', it's a cartoon and there are no real actors to begin with.

It's not like live action where the voices are recorded as the actors speak their lines at the time of filming.

It's even possible for English tracks in anime to be superior to the Japanese originals- the Hellsing TV series for example.

The English language version is quite a bit better and more 'authentic' here, as the characters are in Great Britain to begin with and wouldn't be spoeaking Japanese to begin with.

I saw Spirited Away when it was released in the theatres, also.Everything seems intact, even the English-Voice-over was okay.I've never watched any Anime in English,so as long as the subtitles are legible and well-translated,then it's fine with me.

I saw it in the movies as well and it seemed like it was handled with the utmost care. I haven't seen the original release, but I'm glad to hear it made it to our shores intact. I've been readily awaiting this release on DVD myself. It'll be great to watch it with the original soundtrack.

Still, I have to agree that Disney blows. I saw Iron Monkey in it's original form and it's a beautiful period flick. I was shocked at what Disney (more specifically, Dimension Films which is a subsidary of theirs) did to its stateside release. Absolutely terrible. oh_no

I think the voice-acting in the English-Dubbed version of Hellsing OVA were horrible! The Characters' British-accent sounds phony, and the dialogs are super-cheesy as well. That's just my opinion, though.

You really should start reading (or at the very least skimming) a whole thread before you post.

Legend of Zu is the official remake/updated version of the original zu warriors of magic mountain (they're both produced and directed by tsui hark) that came out about 2 or 3 years ago. it was supposed to be released here in the US under the name Zu Warriors (trailers were shown during Crouching Tiger) but kept getting delayed. Sammo Hung plays the same character in both the original 80's film and in the remake. Yuen Biao's character actually gets replaced by Zhang Zi Yi. Legend of Zu has some really sick SFX.

Thanks for the advice. I know it is a remake of Magic Mountain and I saw the US trailer but I heard it was going to be bastardized for the US release. Maybe once I see that one I will go back and grab the original. If you have any other recommendations of sweet ass movies along the lines of Shaolin Soccer and The Legend of Zu then please let me know either here, pm, or ncarr@auto-plaza.com

thanks SAMHAIN and dullbuoy!

I don't feel like reading through all this, but the US release of Spirited Away had nothing cut from it. Nor will any Miyazaki US release. In the contract Studio Ghibli has with Disney, they are not allowed to alter the film in any way, other than through dubbing or change the opening/ending credits to English. So if it's a Studio Ghibli (Miyazaki's company), you have nothing to worry about. And if you're REALLY scared, you can always import the Japanese releases, since they GENERALLY contain English subtitles (although a few contain dub-titles, along with the English track). Buena Vista Japan releases the Ghibli DVDs in Japan, so Disney has their hands in the pot in Japan as well. If I remember correctly they have world-wide distribution rights to all of Miyazaki's films.

If any of this was stated previously, sorry to repost it.

I wonder how the new theatrical release run will affect it. This time Disney actually has this thing released at 704 theatres across the country. It made 5.5 million only in its limited release, can they pull it up with the new publicity of the Academy Awards, I wonder? Guess we'll find out on monday.

Well, if everyone thinks Disney is going to cut the movies, then just buy the frickin DVD. And if you don't want to, then just shutup. Disney is releasing their uncut dub version to theaters, since the Dub is 1 trillion times more popular with an average american. I'm going to get it on DVD, I only want to watch the sub version
