Where have all our gaming freinds gone?

As I was playing a copy of Capcom Generations 1 (a 1942 collection) I realized something. Not that I hadn't thought of it, but it started to ring true, most if not all of my older friends who I've known for quite awhile, seem to have forgotten about the awesome videogames we played as kids or have been brainwashed to not remeber them.

This disturbes me to quite a great degree. It seems people my age don't remeber those times. I feel most of it has to do with the general feeling that college age students have about video games; they're chilish and anyone associated with them is wasting their time. I talked to one of my buddies Jeremy, who I used to play Turtles in Time and Contra with, and he acted like he never remebered them. Even my sister, who used to play tons of older 2 play co-op games along side of me on the old NES, pretends like it was all just some dream.

Oh but it gets worse. It seems that even though I have friends who have forgotten about it, there are a few that remeber. Now one would think this would be a ray of hope. One would think, "Well, at least they still play games", but sadly I assume too much. The problem is that the games they like now are just drivel. Most of them have NBA,2K,2K1,2K2,2K3 and every other sports game incarnation or $10 bin game. What is happening?? I remeber when I was a kid, kids never liked crap (maybe because there was less availible or we just knew what was good). I remember talking to friends about Megaman, Kid Icarus, Metroid, Zelda, Mario Bros., Punch Out, Sunset Riders, Contra, and the list goes on and on. We all loved those games, and those same friends knew what games were crap (as in most games made by LJN on NES:D) and seemed to know what good gaming was.

So what made my old friends change from a smart, educated, fun, and intelegent gamer, to a stuck up, forgettful, ignorant, bad taste gamer? oh_no

The only answer to your question are lyrics to a Blink song:

"I guess this is growing up."

Too Good!

That's going on my sig file.

It may be just a matter of how much games affected you personally as opposed to the friends you had at that time. I feel like I'm in the same boat, and while it never bummed me out, I used to wonder why people around my age didn't reflect back on times like these.

Then it dawned on me, after I remembered what those times were like. I can remember getting teased about not giving a fart about sports by fellow classmates in elementary school, yet when it came time to talk about video games, I was expertise number one. I was actually memorizing patterns, learning timing on games, reading company names on the games. In other words, it was something I took to, much like a fish to water or Morris Dees to lies, half-truths, and exploitation. Sure, other kids gamed it up from time to time, but I can remember blowing through a week's worth of allowance on a single trip to the arcade (damn that Dragon's Lair machine :p ).

As I grew up, I learned right away that only a handful of people I'd actually meet in life would share the same passion about games as me. For the longest time, all I had was my cousin Terra who was a fellow gaming nerd. Not too long after graduation I met The Reverend 330 Mega and it was only him for years, until I met Tadao with his Japanese date sims and far out import collection. Then I got introduced to the internet and met a ton of cool people who have the same passion.

The thing is, don't get depressed about it. Like the old saying goes, shit happens. Be thankful that you have the internet and realize that you aren't alone in your love for gaming.

Hope this helped.

s7cbassplayer, I'm sure you probably read my Megaman 2 thread... but here is an edited quote from that review:

"Did you ever have any friends when you were a kid, like in elementary school, that you were best friends in the world with? It seemed like nothing could tear you apart. But one day down the road in high school, you two eventually became nothing more than just another face in the crowd to each other with seemingly no regard whatsoever as to the great times you've had in the past. You see a former friend you haven't seen in a few years in the hallway and part of you wants to walk up to them and say hi, but the bigger part of you doesn't bother because you sense that either they don't remember you or they don't care. It's all just a chapter in your past.

Through the years, Mega Man 2 has been much more loyal to me than any of the human 'friends' I had as a kid. In the good times and the bad, through times of troubles and turmoil, Mega Man 2 has always been there for me when I needed it. I don't think it'll ever just forget about me out of the blue, either. That's what I call a true friend."

So what is worse? Having old friends deny playing certain old games, or NOT EVEN being friends with that person today? I'd say it's about equal.

1. If a person totally disregards part of his past, especially if it's not a negative experience, then I find it hard to understand why he would do such a thing.

2. Not being friends with someone who you grew up with and were once considered inseperable, sucks.

At least you still talk to them, even if they deny their past.

I'm lucky to say that I do have some old friends who love and openingly talk about the good old days when we were nine years old and playing NES games and Genesis and whatnot. They're still into games today, but other life obligations have overtaken their time to play games like they used to.

So you can't consider somebody a good friend unless they're a gamer like you? I'm not trying to sound like a smart ass, I'm just trying to understand where you're coming from in this...

No, not at all. My best freind who I've known for about 8-9 years has owend one game :GTA:3 for the PC, so he is in no way a gamer. My friends Jeremy, Tim, Brittney, Dale, JHohn, Josh, Marty, Kenan, and so many others are good friends of mine too, but they seem to have disavowed their gaming past and legacy, that's all.

yeah, it really does suck because One of my best friends ... we spent like every day together from Grade school to the beginning of high school (he went to a different HS)..... now he is in Minnesota... and well.. we've just grown apart. It does suck.

I also hang out with a group of friends every once i awhile (as much as a married man can.... when life obligations are not calling), but we ALL used to enjoy games more than anything... and we would play till 2 am... shouting and yelling.. rivalries up the wall..etc.
Now, they just go to the bars all the time... strip clubs, whatever.. It is Stupid.

I don't like Capcom Generation 1. If you want to have a complete set of Capcom Generation series or hardcore 1942 player then go for it.

Personally I prefer 1941 (Supergrafx) and 19XX than those three shooters on CG 1.

Yea, I purchased it for pretty cheap so I could have it in the good old collection. It's a nice addition and bring back some nice memories.
