For me #1 will always be Phantasy Star 2.
It has everything I want in an RPG.

Followed VERY closely be Shadowrun.
The whole thing- music, gameplay, just sets such a cool vibe.

Thats such a rough call!
Its one of these :

Sonic 2
Gunstar Heroes
Alien Soldier
Rocket Knight Adventures
Flashback

Tough choices....

Probly Sonic 2. The end-game music is like a chorus is children smiling.

Last Battle

Sure, it was a gutted and watered down Hokuto no Ken. Sure Sega cranked out titles that left this in the dust. And yeah, you didn't really do a lot in the game that you didn't get to do in games like Kung Fu Master.

But then, remember the first time seeing it in motion? Remember all those mind-blowing scrolls? The HUGE characters and really awesome music that was previously unattainable in the 8-bit era? This game, for me, was the pinnacle of great gaming for a long, long time. Well, that is until Revenge of Shinobi came out... wink

Somedays it is Gunstar Heroes, other days it is Herzog Zwei. :)

Bottom line: Tecnosoft and Treasure made some greatest games ever for the system.

MD is the hardcore 16-bit freak's paradise.
So many really good unheralded games.
Here's one fool's list:

Assault Suits Leynos (fucking hard, brilliant music, good control that takes patience. EGM ripped it for being too hard as Target Earth.)

Devils Crash MD (better than the PCE rev, thanks to some sweet reworked tunes courtesy of Technosoft. Better bonus rounds too...)

Dodge Danpei (ferocious dodgeball action that beats anything by Technos. Great use of a manga license, wicked control and music.)

Those are some of my sleepers, since everyone has already well-covered the established faves listed. ThunderForce series rates truly high with me, still possibly my fave shooters ever. Right up there with Compile's work.

I still dream at night of the wonders TechnoSoft could have crafted on the Neo-Geo with it's wicked palette, scaling/rotation/sprite handling, and lethal sound chip. ThunderForceNeo will always be my glimmering wet gamer's dream.
