How did Spiced Ham become synonomous with junk mail?

I'm no Internet historian, but I'm curious about how the term 'Spam' was coined to relate to unsolicited email.

It's not as easy as how 'Coke' became know as an illegal substance rather than America's favourtie soft drink, or that the NES game Super Mario Brothers was responsible for 'Magic Mushrooms'.

Anybody know the story behind spam?

More likely it had to do with a specific Monty Python sketch wherein the characters repeatedly said, "Spam, Spam, Spam, spam" thus blocking out all other conversation.

Spam isn't JUST 'spiced ham',

Spam is synonynous with processed crap, y'know- pig entrails, rectums and whatnot,

So-

Spam = shit

Internet junk mail = shit

Spam isn't just limited to the web, you know.

Have you ever gotten mail, phone, or fax spam before? Advertising takes many forms...

Man, it just drives me nuts, especially the phone/fax spam.

I need one of those telemarketer-blocking machines, the constant calls get really bad sometimes... frown
