i plan on getting a gamecube this fall and i'm not sure if its more powerful than ps2 or Xbox.i understand that gamecube has the best E3 showing and people were impressed by it.And with sega's sonic team behind it,gamecube is god with a guarrented PSO 2 and sonic adventure 3!!! along side with nintendo's mario!.but the problem is if its more powerful than ps2.it has 24 meg RAM while ps2 has 32 meg RAM.this got me a little worried.another reason on getting the gamecube is the $199 price tag.

I think youll find the gamecube will be more powerful than the playstation 2 but not as powerful as the x-box,both the x-box and gamecube should be great enough to leave the ps2 trailing behind,i wouldnt bother with ps2
it doesnt seem to have any decent games.
Another thing to remember is the game cube doesnt run off cd's it uses a special nintendo patented disk to prevent pirating i think the things load faster than standard cd,also its not gonna suffer a load of pc port overs like the x-box probably will,it will be simarlar but obviously better than the N64.Providing the thing takes off,a spoksmen for nintendo said if it fails to impress at the E3 show they may scrap it,but from what you say people must have liked it.

First of all, follow this link! It is a very good overview of the design decisions behind the Gamecube. Honest too! I can't picture Sony or Microsoft criticizing one of their current platforms.

http://www.nintendo.com/systems/gcn/gcn_overview.jsp

Next to speak to your question... nothing is more powerful than X-box, the only question here is if the games can justify the system (at E3 they could not). As far as the PS2 goes, there is power there but its video RAM is supposedly horrible and it is difficult to develop for. There are also some great releases like TTT and TMB and more on the way... as a gaming system the PS2 is a decent buy. The DVD player is cruddy though don't let that figure into your decision.

Based on the Gamecube specs above, Nintendo looks like they want to make the next Dreamcast. They are aiming for a developer-friendly system with lots of games unlike N64. I would not worry about getting burned by the GC purchase, the only way that would happen is if there were exclusive PS2 titles that you regretted not having.

The Cube is definitly more powerful than the PS2. It is still up for debate if it is more powerful than the X-Box. All info should be resolved in a couple more months I am sure.

GameCube is definitely more powerful than PS2 and Xbox. But keep in mind that hardware doesnt' mean anything. Software quality and 3rd party support are the main things to win.

The Gamecube is more powerful than PS2. X-Box seems to have the most power thought. Trouble is very few, if any developers have the cash to truly exploit any next-gen machine.
Thats why the first and second wave of PS2 games looked like Dreamcast games because they used the same developing tools.
To really get the most out of any machine you have to design tools just for that system to take advantage of all its power.
The problem with that is it's very expensive, and developers can't afford to make there own.
It's why you won't see games off Shenmue's graphical quality very often. Animation tools in that game were created, not bought "off the shelf".
The same problem is already appearing. Alot of PS2 and X-Box games from 3rd party developers look the same because they use the same tools.
Gamecube stands out as most games were direct from nintendo, using nintendo only delevopment tools so they looked very different to what else was seen. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

And Nintendo should win that debate too <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0"> Xbox is doomed and PSX 2 is the casuals choice.... go with GameCube guys....

That would be a yes in my book. The Gamecube just simply being newer hardwear will outspec the PS2, and I think the X-Box is going to have pretty much PC hardwear in it, so I don't think it will look as good as gamecube.

Anyways Specs dont mean shit EVER in my book. Half the Dreamcast games I have look better than most of the PS2 games my brother has, since PS2 has ugly graphics IMO, I can't stand the compression circles you get in cinemas and when watching DVDs.

The N64 looked FAR better than the PSX and Saturn, however saturn and PSX had far more better games. The N64 had its gems, but not allot of them.

The Jaguar, 3D0 and CDI all had specs that blew away everything during that time (Supernes Genesis) and they all bombed terribly.

I saw the new PS2, X-Box and Gamecube games at E3.I'd say it was like this:

Worst: X-Box - Really unimpressive games. Looked no better than PS2.

Middle: PS2 - Some decent looking games but nothing to get excited about.

Best: Gamecube - Now this is coming from someone who isn't fond of Nintendo and who hates the N64. The Gamecubes games looked FUN. They looked very impressive graphically (Don't believe otherwise...) and the gameplay was dead on. My friend who is a developer for Eidos called me over (Before I had seen the Nintendo area..) and said the ONLY thing that looked any good to him was the Gamecube games.

When all is said and done, which system is more "powerful" doesn't mean anything. All three systems are capable of showing off cutting edge visuals. It's the games and the support the consoles get.

Only time will tell how this all plays out.

Ps2 is a bad choice, I bought the thing for the squaresoft makes and thats about it, I never picked up the bouncer BTW.
The anti aliasing problem which results in jaggies around straight lines is the ugliest thing, it basically kills the 3-D appearance, and to add insult to injury the only game thats worth buying is twisted metal black, which I saw had a topic in this section.

Definately the Cube people, anything miyamoto is behind is destined to be a excellent make/game, I firmly believe he alone is the gaming industries best.
What would you rather have, a hollywood commercial gaming system like XBOX or a beautiful creative system like the GameCube?
I made my choice <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

I strongly believe the new systems look like total shit IMO.
I mean the Gamecubes look is crap, same with the XBOX and station 2.
Who needs a thick black handle on the back of the system? You give me one moron that would hold a expensive unit like that.
XBOX's controller was shit, the japanese version was much smaller then the bulky american version, which is all around irratating.
At E3 they had little to nothing to offer, even the most biased of fans felt left out.
Sony and Microsoft have NO PLACE in gaming, they lack the creative ethics and want gaming to be commercial, I dont know about you but I like to be part of a few million, then rather the entire world.
My theory is simple,
PS2 will crash in a year, do to lack of peripherals and developers packing their bags do to the tremendously hard programming skills needed.
XBOX, or the next 3DO as I and my friend like to call it, speaks for itself, Bill Ga"y"tes thinks he is invincible, he messed with the big boys this time, he may have the marketing muscle, but my guarantee is the system will get lost in the PC junk section of wall mart and other retailers...
Gamecube will dominate and take its crown back as the king of the gaming world, nintendo has alot to uphold, I am damn proud to be a nintendo fan and I have faith in nintendo till I die.
They make great product the 64 was nintendo's worst system altogether I believe that the gamecube will change that, and it will strengthen the graphical engine and not have the shaddy look the 64 had.
I cant wait, Nintendo, you represent gaming IMO.

I had a 3DO myself. There are a few good games on it- but not nearly as many as the Genesis or the SNES have.

Moral of story= specs don't mean jack. If they did, we wouldn't be playing Neo-Geo games or 32-bit games any more.

ummmmm i dont know about an american system... *ahem.... the 3D0 and the Jaguar..
i'll buy the cube. but i'll wait wait to see what happen to the xbox. spending $300 plus on a system with a huge plastic call a controler is not worth it. i rather spend my 300 on ps2 and cube games. oh and just cause Bill Gate have more money then sony and Nintendo combine. doesnt mean jack.. or... Bill decide to buy them. "if you cant beat them buy them"

I'm getting a Game Cube for three reasons:

1) Price
2) Power
3) Games

These three reasons are my driving force to pick up my new Game Cube and not give a second look to those *other* systems. <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

I agree with SS! We really can't compare until both systems come out. I want to see how well GC and Xbox go against PS2.

Here is some feeble but intresting news. An Interview with Nintendo's Perrin Kaplan at IGN, rumor is that MS wants to release its system earlyer than originaly stated. Also, they finally confirmed that GC will release with different color units.

Yeah, with the GBA and N64, it seems Nintendo finally has its act together again. The N64 seemed like neither a success nor a failure... it stuck around for it's share of time, but I know many people (including myself, I sold it) were unhappy with it. Does anyone remember the Virtual Boy? Hahaha... anyway, yes GC is looking good. I've wanted to play another Metroid game sine the last one.

X-Box also has a very great potential. After reading asnd seeing about FFX I've decided to buy a PS2, because I HAVE to have that game.

There are just too many options once again. It's going to be VERY interesting to see who survives the upcoming console war between PS2, GC, and X-Box. The DC should be included there, as many of us know, but it's too late for that now.

Traditionally, there has been room for only two winners of the console wars, while the others become niche products. I see the PS2 holding on because it already has a lead, plus a very established name (and Square!). But of the other two, GC and X-Box, I don't know, but I still don't see all three of these becoming common in the long run. If I had to pick one right now, I'd say GC, because it has better GAMES, which is what's really important (all of you know this). Microsoft seems more interested in showing off what the system can do, instead of having games with heart.
