I am a big fan of the Vision of Escaflowne , its definately one of my favorite series .

I have put the idea of watching the movie version aside for quite awhile . I hesitated buying the HK DVD version even though I saw it as low as 9.95 .

This week I got a promo version of the US DVD release .

I watched it and now I know I should have left it be

OH MY GOD IT SUCKED!!!!!!!!!

It has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the series . The story is horrid , totally twisted around with no premise , and when did Van get mind powers ???

they RAPED it
they SODOMIZED it
they GAVE HITOMI WINGS !

BARF !

The animation was TOP NOTCH but too bad it was a waste of talent

I also enjoyed the music bit it still does not save the film .

Watch the series its fantastic
pass on the movie its a farce

I've already talked about how the movie was weak, but I want to know how you got a promo DVD.

I haven't been able to see this since the first day it came out in theatres way back when.

I work in a Used CD store that also sells DVDs and videogames . We also sell new CDs that we order from a local distributor... I have a friend who works for the distribution company that gives me Anime promos all the time .

I gots the hookup

It wasn't supposed to have anything to do with the TV story.

I haven't seen it yet, but I do plan on picking up the special edition with the soundtrack. Unless I see it before hand and it's really, really terrible...

This is true. The movie is basically using the same characters to tell a completely, and I mean completely different story.

A couple things are similar, (I wont mention them in case you haven't seen the series) but a lot of the relationships and stuff between characters are changed as well.

Oh, and the biggest difference is that while the series is great the movie is crap in comparison.

Oh well, still worth seeing it if you're a big Vision of Escaflowne fan. And the soundtrack is probably the best part about it.

I just rewatched the series this week, actually. And let me tell you, there's one thing I absolutely loved.

*SPOILER IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE SERIES*

Take the scene where Allen and Hitomi meet up in the rain and kiss (with the help of the fate alteration machine). The music playing in the background is so freaking intense and epic that when all is said and done, you'd swear you just watched the most amazing battle in the history of animation.

I'm a big fan of Yoko Kanno, and this is probably my favorite piece of music she's done. ("Chain" is the title, I think)

Music has a strange power over me - it's more important than the animation itself. If the movie can capture the feeling certain parts of the TV series gave me and deliver a decent story...

So yeah, despite the bad review, I gotta try it. ;)

In more recent anime NEWS :

I decided to watch my Good-OL Fansub of Street Fighter II the animated MOVIE .

WORK OF ART

I will not watch the US versions even though one of them says its UN-CUT ....its still edited ....and my fansub is in WIDE SCREEN !!

After all these years I had forgotten about the small sighting of Gokui ((AKUMA)) in one of the scenes in India .

I love hidden stuff like that in anime films .

Well, the thing about some Anime movies is that they love forgetting about the series and doing like a "side story" type deal with it. Escaflowne happens to be one of 'em, and it sounds as though they've done it badly?

It's like the Tenchi series, where the OVA and 2 TV series don't really connect ANYTHING or ever finish the OVA storyline. Weird shit.

The 2 Tenchi TV series are different timelines.

Like the Escaflowne movie: Same characters, different story.

In case anyone is wondering, the Cowboy Bebop movie does tie in with the series about as much as the episodes do. Takes place between episodes 22-23 I think (either after Cowboy Funk or Brain Scratch) and is supposed to explain things that happen at the end of the series... I don't see how, but they intended for it to.

Just more insight into the kind of guy Spike is (and Jet too, really), and a little bit more on the "dream he never wakes up from".

It's meaningful, but certainly not meant to be the focus of the movie. And that's a good thing, IMO, because it doesn't require you watch the entire series to enjoy the movie.
