I would not recommend getting your PS2 modded.

Unless you can find a chip that works 100%

My 1st PS2 is now a doorstop. mad_2

The PS2 flip top cover is the best way to go. I installed the new cover in 30 minutes, and it plays original imports (supposedly backups too) without a problem.

<a href="http://www.ps2cover.com" target="_blank">www.ps2cover.com</a> is one sight that carries them. You need the cover and the Swap Magic discs.

I installed an Origa chip in my ps2 last year so I could play Xenosaga. I've never had any problems with it so if you want a modchip, I would recommend it. This flip top seems to be the better route if you don't want to install a chip, though. However, I don't think that the flip-top will allow you to play import ps1 games.

About the flip-top case... one question. Is there any type of latch on the lid so it won't come open while the game is spinning? I know it would be unlikely, but I wouldn't want some freak incident to have the disc exposed while spinning.

Apparently, you get two discs when you order the Swap Magic Disc. one is for playing PS2 imports, and the other for PS1. I don't have the product myself, but that's what they said at the link Nick posted.

It did come with 2 discs, but I haven't tried a PS1 game yet. They are labeled "DVD" and "CD".

As for the other question, the lid snaps shut so there's no way the disc is going to fly out.

I believe the two discs are for ps2 games only
One is for DVD ps2 games and one is for CD ps2 games.
Nothing for the ps1 stuff.

from the faq at <a href="http://www.ps2cover.com" target="_blank">www.ps2cover.com</a>
CAN I PLAY PSX/PSONE BACK-UPS WITH THE SWAP MAGIC DISCS?
-------------------------------------------------------

No. They are PS2 Boot Discs... for PSX/PSOne back-ups use the GameShark 2/Action Replay 2
original game discs to swap with and boot them up.
So I guess you can use it for ps1 imports if you have a gameshark, but the bootdiscs they sell won't work by themselves.

Alternatively I suppose you could get a combo with the flip-top to play ps2 games and then get a cheap ps2 modchip and only solder the one wire that is required for ps1 games. Most ps2 modchips have the same functionality when it comes to playing ps1 imports so it wouldn't really matter what you got.
Then again, it seems kinda pointless to have a ps2 modchip only for the ps1 games.
