It's an interesting article, but I don't see anything breaking the stranglehold on the portable market Nintendo has.. at least for the time being. Especially with the upcoming release of the GBA SP, which is fixing a few problems with hardware.

The Register has a much better article on this "console."

It's still nine months away from release, but there sure seems to be a lot of issues that need to be resolved, both with software and the hardware. They've got time, and I hope it turns out well because I wouldn't mind picking up one if it's worth it.

Oh, and under 500 euros!?!? I bloody well hope so!!! WELL under 500!

I dont think this will be a very big competitor in the handheld market if the price is going to be that high. One site i went to suggested it was going to be 2 to 3 times as much as the GBA SP.

Well, successful hardware has always followed the philosophy of "Do one thing, and do it well.". Sure, the N-Gage looks cool, and sounds like a good concept, but it has way too many drawbacks.

I can already see it flopping. For one, it's too expensive. It has some serious design flaws too. They really need a different format to store the games. It should be easy to pop a game in and out as well. It also has too many buttons, yet lacks a pair of shoulder buttons.

If anything could come close to upsetting the GBA, it would have to be the GP32. I just see N-Gage dying a quick death, if it comes out at all.

N-Gage will likely die. SNK tried, and tried hard, with a MUCH better handheld than the GBC and look what it got them, more red ink. Then where did that get them? Bankrupt :(

Nintendo has the biggest near monopoly with the GBA, and as long as they keep putting backwards compatibility into it, they'll have buyers in droves, since even if people will never pick up their old GB/GBC games once they get a bunch of GBA games, it's the IDEA that they can still enjoy their investments. In my opinion, THAT is also the ONLY reason the PS2 did as well as it did (and in Japan, since it was a MUCH cheaper DVD player than anything else on the market at the time).

That's my $.02

Maybe these people who are trying to take some market share from Nintendo should learn something from them. A gaming system should be just that. A gaming system. Nothing more, not a phone, camera, etc.

I for one am tired of all the new consoles that have come out that are more than just a console to play games on. I don't want a DVD player or a new home entertainment theatre system. Just a game console. ./end rant.

The handheld market is a monopoly. Nintendo's monopoly. The best that anyone can do is make a dent in the market, and hope to gather interest for a second generation handheld...if they could survive that long. Glad to see someone else trying though.
