I saw this a few days ago on TechTV and forgot to post about it. I was watching "Call for Help" when they had this segment where this guy came in and talked about MAME. Oddly enough, when the guy was scrolling through his roms folder, I noticed he had some KOF roms in there.

Then, the host Chris pointed out the whole "you have to own the original for this to be legal" jazz and they kind of looked at each other as if to say yeah right. Oh well, I think MAME is doing a great service in preserving arcade games and I hope it continues on for years to come.

I'd have to say I agree. The only reason I play MAME is because company's like Capcom and Konami never ported a lot of arcade games. Where's Alien vs. Predator?? That's what I thought, nowhere to be found.

I think I should download all these PSX and N64 ROMS. I mean, nintendo hasn't ported Mario Tennis or Bond to the arcades yet... and I mean, where the hell are they?

Yeah and we can all afford 300 dollar games and even more expensive systems.

Give it a break.

Sorry but I have to agree.
I don't think you should be looking at the ROM situation as a personal thing. But if your looking out for the companies that are actually missing the money then you can get upset.
Hell if I bought a brand new car for only $1000 and then you bought the exact same car for $40,000 thats you own damn fault, not mine.

There's a lot of bitching about ROMS here, and I find it strange that this is the only board I've ever been to where there is so much anti-ROM sentiment. I think it comes from the collectors who are pissed that their $2500 copies of Metal Slug can be played by anyone for free on any PC. I understand that it hurts the game companies to play ROMs that are still being sold, but MAME doesn't really include any of those. I just don't get it...

Make some more commission on those knockoff shirts you make with stolen snk art and sell through cafe press and maybe you can own expensive toys too.

-edit-

Just to clear things up, I don't give a crap who uses roms, but I do get annoyed when people seem to be proud of the fact that they don't pay for their stuff (same goes for mp3s, divx, warez, etc...) and like to wave it in my face like they're doing something special.

I use ROMs, and I fully admit that it's wrong when I play games I don't own, but I always find it funny when people try to rationalize stealing.

It's stealing (unless you own originals), so don't try to act like you're in the right. It's ridiculous and incredibly tacky.

Life is too short to be constantly deluding yourself. Not everything you do is going to be wholesome, so get over it.

Gaming is an expensive hobby. Can't pay the price for it then you have no business playing games. People who justify using ROM's because Neo Geo games are "too expensive" should be shot in the head. I can understand using ROM's for a testing purpose, but other than that I don't really believe in them. Not saying I've never used ROM's but I only do so to test out some games before shelling out the big bucks for them.

That's what I'm fucking talking about. Good man, Talen.

I'm talking about a commitment level here. I will work my ass off to get something that is seemingly "out of reach". There's more to gaming than playing the games. There's a level of respect and integrity we should have because the people who make these games DO THE SAME FOR YOU. And the thing is, on their part, it's a gamble. There's not really a gamble when we go and buy a game. If there is, my 50$ gamble is insignificant to theirs, which could otherwise feed a small country for years. I know what kind of games I like... and I buy those games. They have no fucking clue who I am, but they still invest. I'm there little silent partner who puts food on their table. I'm sure I could tell you more about Kazu Yamane than he could say about me. And that should scare him from doing what he does. Really.

AvP is something of a special case. As not one but two movie properties, you can imagine the chaos that went into licensing that game. Capcom most likely negotiated just the arcade rights for that game, and would have to go back to everybody again to get the home rights. Maybe they paid through the nose, maybe the game didn't do as well as they'd hoped in arcades in the first place...but a coin-op license does not immediately guarantee a home license. Check out the story of Tetris as relayed in David Sheff's book "Game Over" for a really wild example of exactly that.
