Ok, I have been offered a Dreamcast Katana Development kit and a GDR-Writer for $800 shipped, should I go for it?

If you have programming skills and the time necessary to devote to getting the kit operational/functional, then go for it.

If you don't have a good amount of spare time or basic programming skills, I'd say stay away. I doubt you'd be able to sell it for more than $800 anyway...

If you wanted to dev that badly you'd be doing it already.

If its for cool factor, yeah its nice, but you can do the same on a standard PC->DC setup for $20 and free GNU tools.

Was the Dreamcast supposed to be named the KATANA ?

While I was working on my gutted Dreamcast units I noticed that the motherboard and other PCBs had KATANA printed on them .

for example the controller PCB says KATANA sub board # 2

Yes, originally the Dreamcast was code-named the Katana at the beginning of it. The name Dreamcast was given later to it.

After the Saturn, Sega of Japan and Sega of America were both developing machines in a sort of competition with each other.
The SoJ machine was codenamed 'Katana'
Cant remember off-hand what the SoA machine was called.
Anyone?

It was also code-named the BlackBelt earlier, right?

Yes, I think your right. I don't remember but I have seen this in one of my magazines, I might be able to find it in my pile of gaming magazines, if I ever get the courage to search true them all! :)
