I think that the title of the topic explains what I wish to know, but....

Does anyone know of any good techno artists or groups or whatever you call them? Or the names of any good techno cds?

Thanks...

Hmmm..

Well the Prodigy used to do a bit of techno (Their early albums), but I don't like their newer stuff.

Some of their best techno songs would have to be Ruff in the Jungle Bizness, Voodoo People, and Music Reach 1234.

don't mean to rain on the parade but the Prodigy's early stuff wasn't techno it was pure Dance music(and pretty much still is). Don't get em mixed up.

C+C MU$IC F@CT0RY 0WNZ REAL MCCOY FOR PHEER3!1!

Seriously though:
Underworld
BT
Future Sound of London
LTJ Bukem
Way Out West
Aphex Twin
Hybrid
Boom Boom Satellites
Fluke
Paul Van Dyk

And Paul Oakenfold is not a techno act. He's a fucking DJ who doesn't bother to tell anyone that the music he plays ISN'T HIS. The ONE CD he's released is decent at best, and it has about 300000 co-writers/producers. Sorry, I just seriously hate Paul Oakenfold, he's ruined the image of electronic music.

For a few years I refered to "The Best CD I Ever Purchased" as Deep Thoughts by Nitro Records, a punk-rock compilation CD. $5 and it kicked major fucking ass. You should still be able to find it, and I'd suggest picking it up if you like that whole so-cal skate punk scene.

But now, the title belongs to Metropolis Records 2001 compilation. A lot of it is darkwave/industrial but it's very good.

It has MDFMK, Project Pitchfork, Wumpscut, Front Line Assembly, Informatik, VNV Nation...and a bunch of others. You can find it for $8 or less and it's awesome.

Also, Underworld, Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, The Dust Brothers, Ken Ishii (sorta an aquired taste)...all good.

As far as what is technicall 'techno', for me the lines have long sinced blurred between house and techno. Jungle is one thing because it's very distinctive. I don't know, maybe I've just lost the ability to really discern, ha ha.

Kick ass.

What tracks from VNV, Project Pitchfork and Wumpscut are on that? I've never heard a Metropolis sampler... Good choice man.

VNV Nation: Epicenter

Wumpscut: Wreath of Barbs

Yeah, it's a quality CD on a whole, I've had the whole thing on my mp3 player for as long as I've owned it (the mp3 player that is).

None of that strikes me as techno above, in Portsmouth Techno takes up the majority of club nites as we live in grots vile.

Techno DJ's with records include :

Jeff Mills
Dave Angel
Dave Saunders
Lewis D
Green Velvet

As far as groups go, i wouldnt necessarily call them techno, but u could go far worse than to pick up the Fisherspooner album.

With Techno, House and Trance the differences are in the Basslines. Techno is the father of House and Trance so it isn't hard to get them mixed up if you haven't listened to them alot. Techno basically is recognized by its prominent thumping "4 by 4 beat" which is like thump.thump.thump.thump., house can can also have a 4 by 4 beat however it also usually accompanied by a rolling usually funky sounding bassline borrowed from Disco music. For an example of the rolling house bassline DL a song called "Revolution 909" by daft punk, its a perfect example of house music. House is funkier and more danceable than the other 2 and because of this they have a sub genre called Vocal house where soul singers do the vocals for the songs. Trance is probably the easier to differentiate from the others because it has a higher pitched bassline thats seems to put you in a trance(hence the name trance). Trance has alot more ambience and changes in tones than House and Techno. Trance also usually has a 4 by 4 beat but its not always as prominent as Techno's or Houses. For a perfect example of trance DL Sasha's "Xpander", its a excellent song.

I make a new paragraph for Jungle/drum'n'bass(i'm biased look at my sig make_fac ). Jungle is just a whole different animal from the other 3 mentioned above. Jungle doesn't come from straight "techno". Jungle came out of a type of music called "Hardcore". Hardcore came from techno but it sounded almost nothing like techno because it used wild drum beats and sampled reggae voices and beats and it also sampled alot of beats/vocals and sound efffects from Horror movies from the 80'sJungle's basslines don't thump like techno/house/trance's do. the original Jungle has warm rolling basslines that are borrowed from reggae. The drum beats were borrowed from hip hop and they were sped up and chopped up with a few more beats added and they sounded extremely complex which makes it completely different from techno/trance/house. Jungle has changed very much since then and sounds like "2 step" which is a bass hit followed by a drum hit which sounds like "boom.clack..boom.clack". Jungle has so many sub genres that all sound different but keep a similar premise. Regardless Jungle is almost nothing like the other 3. A good few good jungle tracks to listen too are "Original Nuttah" by ShyFX and Apache Indian, "Temper Temper" by Goldie, anything from LTJ Bukem, Ram Trilogy and Photek. All those artist's music sound different but its all Jungle/Drum'n'Bass.

IDM means "Intelligent Dance Music". The man at the forefront is none other than Aphex Twin himself. IDM has its roots in jungle/drum'n'bass music. Its sound is hard to describe. The basslines are real wierd cuz at times it can sound like a rock guitar and sometimes a drill or something. DL the Aphex Twin song "Come to daddy" and see for yourself.

sorry if my explainations are a bit wierd, i'm lazy and i'm not good at explaining shit.

EDIT: something i forgot to say the first time, "techno" is NOT the name for the whole genre. The name of the genre is "Dance/Electronica"(i hate the name electronica). Despite people saying that its techno, its wrong, its not all techno. Just thought i'd let you know :) .

Sure, techno is a derivative from the dance genre.

Like punk, i would catagorise Disco as more of a period than genre, as modern music labeled as such is mimicing "punk" and "disco" if sounding similar, while not actually being.

If u see what i mean.

Hmm... Wow, and those aren't even very good tracks, at least from VNV and Wumpscut. I can't really recall the Project Pitchfork one, but I'm sure it's great...

If you like the sampler that much, you should look into buying the full albums. Futureperfect is an amazing album, download the track "Beloved" if you don't believe me that it's worth owning...It really, really is. Also, Wreath of Barbs is a decent album from Wumpscut, but nowhere near as good as his previous album Embryodead.

Futureperfect by VNV Nation and Embryodead by Wumpscut. Two of the best CDs you could ever own if you like what you hear on that sample. Trust me.
