Looking through the games pile for the last system I own since I can't fucking do anything because I have NO money and a fuel tank that's on empty and has to last 'til Thursday and it hit me:

There's no fucking classics for the Dreamcast.

Sure it's one of the best systems ever because it has a shitload of GOOD and FUN games but there are no "OMFG this game ownz so much as no wonder it goes for $150". I'm talking Panzer Saga, Dragon Force, Guardian Heroes, Final Fantasy calibur here folks and sadly, there are none!

The closest it comes to is Soul Calibur and Shenmue. The rest are just games.

And why does the import scene suck so bad for this system? After the Godsend for importers that was the Saturn the DC turned out to be a disappointment. oh_no

So you're mad there aren't any outrageously expensive games? I'm glad the games are cheap, and fucking GOOD.

Wow man. I'll tell you what, I'm a big DC fan, and I'd say its got at least a COUPLE CLASSICS...and i mean, CLASSICS.

REZ, for example. Way better than the Panzer games; owned.

Ikaruga...sure its also on Gamecube now, but its almost like the DC's brilliant swansong.

The only place you'll find perfect ports of SF:3, third strike and double impact; as well as a few Original sega oddities, like Cosmic Smash.

I know the Saturn kind of "owned" it, but the DC has this cool, wanna-be-sleek-the-future-20xx feel to it.

A few nice SNK ports [98-2002, MOTW, LB]

Tons of great shooters [ikaruga, gw, gw2, cannon spike, zero gunner 2, MARS MATRIX]

I dunno man...the DC, along with the Neo, is the one system I would never ever sell.

I have to say that Cosmic Smash is one of those "OMFG! WTF?! ASL?!?!" type games. I can't believe it doesn't get more praise in the gaming world. Jet Grind Radio is the DC's biggest classic game. There's no way you can say JGR ISN'T a classic, there had never been any game like it before. Just because a game sells for $150 doesn't make it good. (Ikaruga is better than Radiant Silvergun, and yes I've played both)

I wouldn't call those games classics though. You really need to separate yourself from the pack and become a staple in the gaming world to be labeled classic and all but 2 (that I can think of) really accomplish this since 99.9% of all DC games are so...generic (good generic and in some cases very good, but generic nonetheless).

That's why the DC suffers from the same problem all the new generation of consoles suffer...generic shit. The only redeaming factor of the DC is the SEGA edge that you can just barely make out with their dedication to quality 2D gaming.

Only "classics" that come to mind for the DC was that piece of shit they called Sega Smash Pack Volume 1.

I still have visions of a noose swinging when I look at this game. At least I only spent $4.99 on it at Best Buy....... oh_no

JGR? REZ? This shit can be found on various systems and will be rehashed til the next gen arrives. I bought JGR on release and it didn't really wow me. Fun, yes, but not OMFG *dies* fun.

Shit like Dragon Force, Guardian Heroes, Final Fantasy 3, and an endless list of imports for the Saturn and PS alike will never be duplicated. They are there and that's it. Take em or leave em and they are great.

This thread is insane!
Where the hell are all the sane people?!

I can't believe DC is getting ruined this much; I really think its almost the ultimate system.

Seriously, just give me my DC and REZ/IKARUGA/SF:TS and send me off.

REZ is better than everything on the Saturn clumped together and turned to gold.

The ultimate game------

This is all entirely subjective anyway. FF3 is fantastic, but its certainly not unique as it has several things that could be considered "generic".

Shooters suck! :D

And you can get REZ on any system now. Or maybe just the PS2 I dunno. Same with Ikaruga. If those are the only 3 games you need get a Cube and be done with it. :D

The only thing really generic about FF3 was the interface. Back then RPGs were all about the story and characters and nobody can touch FF3 on those aspects. buttrock

Feelgood is absolutely right about the lack of true classics on the DC.

Id Shenmue was such a classic (I loved it), then the second installment would have sold better on the XBOX.

Problem with the games being so cheap is that the copied games play on an unmodded DC so no one really has to pay through the nose to play a game.

I'm glad that the games are still cheap as I'm still looking for a SF:TS to add (and maybe STA3).

The DC is still a kick ass system and should be allowed to be the last great system with super-cheap games.

I just have to pop in and agree that besides my Neo and NGPC the DC is the only system that I absolutely can not live without! This is arguably the 2nd or 3rd best system ever made IMHO. Grandia 2, Rez, Shenmue 1 & 2, JGR, Power Stone 1 & 2, SFIII 3rd strike, MOTW, KOF's, innovative titles like Typing of the Dead, Seaman, Samba de Amigo, PSO, and many others make this a keeper FOR LIFE! I have Guardian Heros, PDSaga, and many other classics for the Saturn...but god damn I love my DC soooo much. Four player support, online, voice mic chat, many fighters, shooters, and a ton of innovation make it an untouchable system that provided a far superior alternative to those terrible late 90's early 2000's years of mostly shitty PS1 and N64 titles and an awful first generation of PS2 bombs **looks at The Bouncer** Just my opinion but I thank the stars for my DC!!! buttrock

OK, here's my coin on the sub:

The DC has a game that is a classic to me- and by that I mean that it is available ONLY on the DC and that it is awesome.

Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram w/Twinsticks

This game is just about one of the best 3D next-gen gaming experiences going.

It's still the best post-Sega Saturn game experience I've had overall.

Don't play it without the twinsticks though, it's NOT the same, the twinsticks make this game feel freaking awesome.

Yes, I too have never been so outraged at some of these remarks that you people are making. Dreamcast, along with all the other systems tank almost above, but tied with the Neo's quality and pretiege of gaming goodness. Sega = innovative, and there were a TON of classix for the DC. Lets look at them.

All treasure games
Sonic Adventure
Grandia II
Skies of Arcadia
JGR
MSR
The SNK ports
Cool Cool Toon (never tried it, but it looks sweet
Crazy Taxi port
DOA2
Soul Calibur
MvC 1 and 2
CAP vs SNK 1 and 2
and plenty more
Sons of bitches
Respect this system of a beauty
Gotta go, peace out.

JGR = best game ever.

i cant believe dreamcast isnt 'classic' enough...

which doesnt even make sense, since what defines a classsic?

old?

expensive import?

a good game?

if its c. then dreamcast has TONS AND TONS.

if its a. then theres MGAH and Namco museum and teh smash pack, plus theres DA ROMZZZ

b. well, fuck i mean its only 4-5 years old.

Classics on Dreamcast? I know of a buttload. Soul Calibur, Skies of Arcadia, Rez, Ikaruga, Shenmue, Sonic Adventure, Street Fighter 3, Frame Gride, any SNK game etc etc.

And btw the game doesn't have to cost wazoo up the ass to be considered a classic, imo.

I'm actually not a very big DC fan either, not that it doesn't have good games, but nothing has ever really stood out of the games I've played. I've played some great games on it but a lot of them are available elsewhere like for my Neo-Geo or GC. Ikaruga is AWESOME but I'm getting it for my GC. I actually hate Mars Matrix and the Giga Wings, too. The best games I've played for the DC are Sega Rally 2 and Bangai-O. Cosmic Smash is cool also... And I KNOW I am missing some greats right now but I'm still searching. TSS on the DC is also worthy though I own the Saturn one so no point in getting it for the DC.
I really REALLY prefer the shooter line up on the Saturn. Not the RPGs, damn, the Saturn has the lamest bunch of overhyped ass RPGs ever. Dragon Force is tied as the worst game I ever played. :-P But I love the Neo-Geo with a passion!

What am I trying to say? Well I just haven't found the killer ap for the DC yet that makes me love it. That's all.

The domestic RPG scene for the Saturn is abysmal. The import RPG is hella nice though.

And how can you dis Dragon Force? That is prolly the single greatest showpiece for just how epic and original an RPG can be. Sure it had some problems with repetition but shit man just look at what it did! The sequal blew ass BTW.

I would have gone creamy if a sequel hit the DC. I guess we're stuck with Dynasty Warriors as the closest alternative though (and it's not even close). frown
