it had actually lived up to the "hype and expectation"
Just to put my two cents in before anybody else responds I think some people would still talk shit about it mainly because it killed of the SEGA Dreamcast. But again thats my opinion though and it may be different.

As long as I'm playing a good game for it, any system is grand. :) I just don't get all these shiteaters that bash systems.

Of the current "next-gen" consoles, I have a PS2 and a GC... X-Box really didn't have much that interested me until fairly recently, but I don't plan on getting one anytime soon...
I'm not a fanboy by any means, but the PS2 has countless good titles, and anyone who says otherwise obviously hasn't had much time to actually play many of the PS2's better titles, or, and this isn't necessarily a bad thing, they might have a different taste in games than the main stream... But really, can anyone sit here with a straight face and say that GTA3 sucked? That Dynasty Warriors 2 and 3 were crap? That Capcom vs. SNK 2 wasn't any good on PS2? That Dave Mirra 2 and Tony Hawk 3 were horrible games?

I expected a good amount of games I would want to play. PS2 just did not deliver in that department. <img src="graemlins/ohno.gif" border="0" alt="[Oh No]" />

Ed. Dave Mirra is a great game, gotta love the front flip to back flip tricks!

What matters to me is that most of the original shipment of PS2's had failing DVD drives, and a great many of all PS2's experience laser problems, even early in life. That's reason enough for me to stay away. ^^

If...

it had a different design (don't ask me what kind of one...I'm not a designer)...

if they had spent more time developing the system...i.e.- 1)more VRAM 2)anti-aliasing 3)four controller ports 4)more DVD options...etc...

other than these VERY MINOR flaws that from my point of view...kept the system from reaching god-like status (again, in my eyes)...the rest is creamy...minty...heavenly...tasty...quality...gaming goodness...

I, too, am without an xbox. However, I will be getting one fairly soon. I like games, period. And when I`m playing a game that I enjoy, My eyes are focused on the game itself, not the system setting on the floor. As far as I`m concerned, all systems are the same. They let Me play the games that I like. They keep Me company when it`s rainy outside. They protect Me from things that lurk in the dark. They control Me. Yes, My little grey plastic friend, I will kill for You. I will kill them all. I wi.....did I say that outloud ??

I simply weren't blown away by the graphics at first. I expected everything else. But after seeing Ratchet and Clank my graphical worries are nearly gone.

I own all 3 "next gen" systems and while I like my PS2, I don't love it. MGS2 was a letdown, and GTA 3 got old after a while. I just finished Medal of Honor Frontline and enjoyed it immensely, but there just doesn't seem to be that vibe I got from my Genesis, SNES, or DC.

In fact, none of the consoles out now give me that vibe. IMO, the GBA is the best system on the market.

Actually, of all ppl I find myself suporting the PS2 here. I prefer Nintendo, and while the PS2 sucked at first, it managed a decent turn around. The game lineup is much better than the X-Box's.

The system deserves far more credit than it's getting.

Still, though, those jaggies really mar the graphics in its better games...

You're kidding right?

If it's anything, PS2 is getting way too much credit

Go to GameFAQs... they give PLENTY of credit to PS2.

The PS2 had no where near the amount of good titles in its first 6 months as the DC did. The problem was that it pretty much killed the DC before it really did have any good games out.

The games were on their way, but they weren't there yet. Gamer loyalty and hype killed the DC. I mean when Square says the next FF will be in full 3D on PS2 and shows the dance scene from FF8 in realtime on the PS2, the Japanese (and me included) were sold on the damn thing from the first announcement.

It's just that in all the previous console wars, the winner was dictated by who had the best overall hardware and the best amount of good, exclusive games.

The DC wasn't as powerful as the PS2, but it had way more great exclusive games. And when it just died so suddenly after the PS2 launch may "old school" gamers were just dumb founded because it defied all logic.

Not to mention Sony's early entry to the market compared to Nintendo and Microsoft, it let them focus all advertising and buisness deals on destroying the Dreamcast before the other stuff came out. It was a well planned and well executed move, and it worked better than it should have.

The victory of the PS2 was built in the buisness room, not in the market place like it used to be, which is a shame. I don't think it will happen again, because PS2 just had the timing right. I mean if PS2, XBox, and GC just launched at the same time, there's no telling who'd be in the lead right now. It's just that Sony had the best timing in the world, and they made it through the window and shut it behind them. I mean they killed the DC in Japan immediately w/ adds and announcements, or what have you. So by the time they got to the US, they already had Sega on the ropes. So when sega folded it gave them all the time to just build a user base that could never be overcome by MS or Nintendo.

Now this is not to say that PS2 doesn't have great games. But rather it has all the great games because of it's buisness planning and savvy. I mean as a developer you're going to make your big game for the platform that can get you the biggest amount of sales. That's why FFX, DMC, and GTA3 are on PS2. Not cause it's the better system. If it were decided on what was the better system everything would be on XBox.

Gaming is a buisness now. We'll have to live with it. This doesn't mean that we won't get any good games, it just means that it'll be harder for us to decide what platform it'll be on.

Peace

GameFAQs? lol, sorry, I haven't seen thier PS2 rundown. I mean in message boards and talking to people. Look at the PS2 bashing thread, for example.

Thanks for your insight, but all the same I think it's managed to become an good system, for whatever reason.

Granted, I still prefer the GCN...

I did finally buy a PS2 recently. While I will admit that there are some good games out for it (like Maximo), I feel that it hasn't come close to living up to the ridiculous hype that Sony pushed (and millions of lemming gamers ate up) before and after its release. For all that hype, the system has turned out to be one of the most poorly designed consoles ever, totally unfriendly to developers and not able to meet the standards that it should have met.

Despite the paltry few games that seem to be able to "take advantage" of the PS2's power (Ratchet and Crank is one of the few of recent games), the vast majority suffer from low-res textures, jaggies, long load times, and choppy frame rates. There are also only two controller ports (cheap), no HDD, no broadband adapter, and no HDTV support.

All of these problems are pretty typical of PS2 games, which is really sad considering that this SHOULD have been a WAY better system based on the time it came out (which was well after the DC, and the DC in many ways is a better designed system). Even Sony recognizes that the design was questionable, since they've acknowledged that the PS3 (or whatever they call it) will come out sooner than anticipated.

Was my new PS2 worth $180 when I bought it recently? Barely, it certainly WASN'T worth the ridiculous $300 they milked it at for over several years. The XBox at the same price now blows away the PS2. Of course the XBox has only been out for about 8 months, so it will take time for a big library of good games to be built, but that'll happen . . . and even now, there are some great games out for it.

EXACTLY! The PS2 has some of my fave games ever. Crappy design, shoddy graphics, and lack of features will never change that. The same can be said of any console with good games.
