The PS2 had no where near the amount of good titles in its first 6 months as the DC did. The problem was that it pretty much killed the DC before it really did have any good games out.
The games were on their way, but they weren't there yet. Gamer loyalty and hype killed the DC. I mean when Square says the next FF will be in full 3D on PS2 and shows the dance scene from FF8 in realtime on the PS2, the Japanese (and me included) were sold on the damn thing from the first announcement.
It's just that in all the previous console wars, the winner was dictated by who had the best overall hardware and the best amount of good, exclusive games.
The DC wasn't as powerful as the PS2, but it had way more great exclusive games. And when it just died so suddenly after the PS2 launch may "old school" gamers were just dumb founded because it defied all logic.
Not to mention Sony's early entry to the market compared to Nintendo and Microsoft, it let them focus all advertising and buisness deals on destroying the Dreamcast before the other stuff came out. It was a well planned and well executed move, and it worked better than it should have.
The victory of the PS2 was built in the buisness room, not in the market place like it used to be, which is a shame. I don't think it will happen again, because PS2 just had the timing right. I mean if PS2, XBox, and GC just launched at the same time, there's no telling who'd be in the lead right now. It's just that Sony had the best timing in the world, and they made it through the window and shut it behind them. I mean they killed the DC in Japan immediately w/ adds and announcements, or what have you. So by the time they got to the US, they already had Sega on the ropes. So when sega folded it gave them all the time to just build a user base that could never be overcome by MS or Nintendo.
Now this is not to say that PS2 doesn't have great games. But rather it has all the great games because of it's buisness planning and savvy. I mean as a developer you're going to make your big game for the platform that can get you the biggest amount of sales. That's why FFX, DMC, and GTA3 are on PS2. Not cause it's the better system. If it were decided on what was the better system everything would be on XBox.
Gaming is a buisness now. We'll have to live with it. This doesn't mean that we won't get any good games, it just means that it'll be harder for us to decide what platform it'll be on.
Peace
