I heard today that Nintendo officially announced on the 6th that they will be going the same direction that SEGA did and will no longer be producing consoles , only software .

EDIT: NINTENDO FOCUSES ON MAKING GAMES NOT NEWER CONSOLES ! SORRY

This is big news , that leaves only Sony and Microsoft , can you imagine whats going to happen to the gaming industry ?

EDIT :SORRY SORRY SORRY MY MISTAKE IGNORE THIS CRAPPY POST

Imagine if Microsoft follows : Wich seems very possible at the moment , Sony will have the monopoly . and they can charge whatever they want for Hardware and Software .

EDIT: DITTO

These are wary times people .

Somehow, I don't see this happening. Nintendo, who loves to charge the licensing fees, having to pay those SAME fees to another company? Bullshit.

I think I saw the article you read, and I think you may have misunderstood. They were only solidifying their stance that it's all about the games (not DVD players) and their system is just that, for games only. I didn't get that they were quitting hardware from it at all.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm not on this one.

Iwata reiterated Nintendo's strategy of appealing to consumers with innovative games, rather than trying to build ambitious, all-encompassing entertainment platforms like Sony's PlayStation 2 and Microsoft's Xbox. "We're reaching the limits of how far we can appeal to consumers by boosting the machine's performance or providing more compelling graphics and sound," Iwata said during the meeting. "For the past few years we've been looking for new ways to surprise people, new ways for them to have fun."

Iwata also defended the company's policy of maintaining a stockpile of cash rather than investing it in new businesses. "We have 900 billion yen ($7.25 billion), but one of our rivals, Microsoft, has 5 trillion yen," he said. "This is a high-risk business. There may come a time when we would have to make intensive investments."

This meeting comes shortly after the company posted a profit of 106 billion yen ($849 million), up 10 percent from the previous year, on a 20 percent rise in sales. Nintendo has also met other console manufacturers Microsoft and Sony in a price-slashing war, dropping the price of its GameCube from $199 to $149. Iwata expressed concern, however, that the price-cutting fever in hardware may spread to software, where it could do severe damage to game makers' bottom lines.

"We have a sense of crisis, that price cuts in software could destroy the game industry," he said. "The effort to produce machines with better technology has reached its limit," Iwata said. "If things continue, they may lead to the decline of the entire game industry."

this does not pulling out of console making. It sounds more like not trying to compete with the other two for the most powerful console. That's very reasonable. Look at the X-Box - so damn powerful, but no metal slug.

They do not say that they are dropping out, but that they are going to concentrate on making superior games, since hardware is reaching a plateau. This is about the tenth time I have seen this article Posted somewhere, with people saying, "Nintendo is getting out of the console business!" Does it actually say that? No.

Which basically says, "We will make more money by focusing on games, not on making constantly newer, more powerful consoles."

It still does not say they are bailing as a hardware developer.

And? That doesn't say explicitly that they won't be making a new console.

Well . If they are not going to focus on new hardware , then obviously they will not be creating NEW HARDWARE .....at least for a long ass time anyway .

In my opinion the only reason Gamecube got its recent boost is because of the Resident Evil series being RE-Released on the system . Before that it was in very LOW demand , LOWER than Dreamcast's launch .

How long can the system use this series as a crutch , besides the Nintendo brand games coming out (( Starfox , Metroid , Zelda , )) I see very little future support for this small wonder of a machine .

Yes I know : Soul Calibur 2
and Square possible making
games for gamecube

Games make the system
not visa-versa

if they plan on making this machine outlast future consoles from other companies they need to get the ball rolling .

If I focus on my right hand... I mean really stare at it, and focus my attention on it... does my left hand cease to exist? They are saying that their games will do the talking, not some flashy new piece of hardware. It does not mean that they will not be making new consoles.

I don't think this means they're dropping out altogether, it probably just means they're going to try to make the GC last longer than 5 years with enhancements and good games. They'll probably be a new Nintendo system in the future, just not for awhile.

Look at it this way, Retrogamer. If Nintendo does get out of the hardware business later (Which I do not see in the near future, what with the TriForce and all) you can say, "SEE! I told you so!" ;)

so they aren't pulling a sega on us they're pulling an SNK. except with more 3rd party producers. more power in the games not the system it's an odd combination; that has been seen before. but i just hope they dont go the way of the last company that pulled one of these. this is not a retirement, and whoreing out of their products. mario won't appear on the ps2 nintendo gamecube will have mario for a longer time, not the standard life of three to four years. after reading this i see nintendo embodying SNK even more. they're putting all of their work into their games and not the systems. nintendo knows their system has the power, but their games are lacking. that's what their beefing up so don't overreact.

I wont hold that kind of grudge .

I will be too busy mourning the loss of another GAME giants role in console perfection .

It will be a sad day when MicroSoft and Sony are the only companies still making console hardware.

When I first read this article, I saw it at team xbox.

http://www.teamxbox.com/news.php?id=3299&fc=1

This version of the article makes nintendo seem confused, arrogant, or stupid.

With statments along the lines "online games have limited appeal" and "I expext to sell 50 million GC's by 2005 (good luck with that one :) ) make me feel sorry for this guy.

we need another console to even things out :

we need another game developer to rise from the ranks of just making games and create a console .

Like SNK did ;)

Imagine if you will if CAPCOM made their own console
