I was typing a reply to the post when I hit the "post reply" key and learned it was deleted.

It wasn't a long reply, just a few sentences, but must have happened in the 2 minutes I was typing.

Yeah I kept refreshing it over and over because people were replying like hell. Then all of a sudden it was deleted. Oh well.

Most likely, when the account was deleted by whomever, the posts made by the user were also pruned (deleted) at the same time.

If that person started the topic, the thread gets nuked....

It never occured to me to check because I was informed that I was trying to reply to a topic that didn't exist. No mention that it was closed or moved.
