Right now on VH1 they have a special on how rap came out and made itself known in the mainstream in the 80's. Man just sitting here lookin at this makes me remember the good times, the times when i used to breakdance in my driveway as a kid wearing my oldskool jordans and shit. Times when it was more about the music and the message and all around having fun before the materialism and negativity effected it. They was showin a clip with Run DMC and the Beastie Boys on tour and it showed how kids of all races were together enjoying the music and shit. The Bboy, The graff writer, the MC and the DJ on the 1's and 2's. Damn, those were the good times. Rap has become a mere shadow of itself.

p.s. i'm wearing my pumas right now.

Yep, I love old rap. Those Tommy Boy re-releases and the Grand Master Flash mix tapes from last year were great. Don't think there will be anything quite as excellent this year.

Ultramagnetic MCs were my thing.

Kool Keith is still the greatest man in hiphop.

The thing i loved the most about the 80's rap scene was the fashion. I love the Kangols and sweat suits and Adidas super stars and pumas. Hell i got me 2 pairs of Adidas and am gonna get some more in just about every color i can think of. People took inexpensive clothes and made fashion gold out of it. I saw a clip of LLCoolJ lookin fresh as hell in his kangol and sweatsuit with the gold chain and the his nikes. I want an outfit like that so fuckin bad. I'd sport that type of shit everyday.

!!!LLCOOLJ IS HARD AS HELL!!!!

Kool Keith is awesome. I love his oldskool track at the end of the Dr.Octagon CD.

Come to think of it, Dr.Octagon is awesome, too. Plus it had a great cover by Pushead.

Public Enemy, Run-DMC, Boogie Down Productions/KRS-ONE, Beasties, Digital Underground...that was where it was at.

Hip-hop is just another oversold whore. When I was into rap in high school ten years ago, I got nothing but shit for it. Now it's so mall-driven and mainstream it just makes me laugh. When I see rap stars co-starring in shitty action pics with Steven Seagal and Jet Li, all I can do is just shake my head and chuckle.

I think it just proves that everything cool either dies before it gets too big, or blows up and becomes diluted and co-opted.

Kurtis Blow
Cameron Paul
Man-Tronix as well as a slough of others I cant remember at the moment.

Too Short was good for the first few years then it just got repetitive and boaring much like Luke Skywalker did ,Luke skywalkers older freestyle stuff was really great stuff , pre 2 live crew.

I think the whole rap scene turned into total shit around 1988 or so.

it's all about the R-A-K-I-M in yo ear!!!

i loved RAP before they started calling everything HIP HOP and KEEPING IT REAL (or the times before rap songs had no sing-a-long r&b choruses)

although some of them are bringing back that old skool feel ala "Made ya look" by Nas and Grindin by the Clipse.......just not a whole lot of them.

Yeah its always only a matter of time before it gets to the mainstream and becomes changed for the worse. It happened when I got into Dance music when I lived in Europe. I moved back to the states 2 years before Dance music got to the states and in 1997 it hit mainstream america and they changed the name to "Electronica" and every bandwagon hopper was at raves and doing Xtacy.

the Dance music errr the "Electronica" scene doesn't make me as mad as what happened to Hip Hop because Dance music still is pretty underground and the underground stuff is still pretty good and sounds pretty close to what it did when it was new and fresh unlike hip hop which has totally flipped the switch and hardly sounds like it used to.

Now I won't lie, I do like alot of mainstream rap especially any shit from Timbaland & Missy or the Neptunes/N.E.R.D.. It just is so different than the oldskool shit. Almost every video is the same. I like to see scantily clad women in my videos but not when its the same girls, same premise different artist. Do something different, jeez. Rap now is lacking the culture it once had.

The fans are brainwashed too. There are so many times i've gotten made fun of for breakdancing or wearing adidas or not liking thug shit or materialistic type shit. They say the shit I do is played out or lame or just stupid or sometimes i've even had my fellow black people tell me "Black people don't do that shit, thats for them asian kids"(ironically black people invented breakdancing), what a bunch of ignorant bastards.

I'll be oldskool for life.

I agree with you guys, rap just isn't the same anymore. I remember the old days back around 82 or 83 breakin' with my friends on some cardboard in the driveway. Those were the days. Listening to Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash, Kurtis Blow, Whodini, Rakim, Newcleus, and Doug E Fresh. Back then it was about fun, now 99% of rap is bling or gangsta. Rap today is boring and chiche. Give me old skool rap anyday.

I love old Run DMC, Public Enemy, Grandmaster Flash... and The Geto Boys. This is gonna sound really dumb, but the soundtrack for the movie Office Space has some of my favorite Geto Boys songs on it.

I miss those days... frown

3rd bass kicks ass...anyone else ever heard of this group with the two white guys MC Search and Pete Nice? "Step into the AM" is one of my fav childhood rap cuts. These guys get no run whatsoever.

Kid 'n Play kick ass...

Kool Mo Dee owns! Wild wild west still gets a decent amount of play 'round these parts.

Digital Underground....'nuff said... Duwutchalike and Same Song are still my anthems.

LL cool J can still bring it when put to the test...Cannibus can attest to that. "Momma said knock you out" is a classic. One of the original fire starters.

While I'm in love with NAS, EVE, Eminem, DJ Quick, Mos Def, and Xzibit...for the most part, modern day rap puts me in a veggie state more often than not.

If I'm at a party and I hear anybody from the Cash Money Clique getting represented, I'll either A: Leave! Most common when I'm looking for a reason to split. Or B: Simply pull out my walkman...

I was about 9 back in '88 when I first started to fall in love with rap. My infatuation for the music lasted 'til about '96...then people like Puff hit the scene and started telling me how broke I was non stop, and the lack of hoes I could pull on a consistent basis. Rappers have acknowledged the material things in life for a long time, but it went to extreme heights in the mid '90s. Consequently, I've lost much of my enthusiasm for the overall scene.

I'd classify myself as 70% R&B, then the remaining 30% being Rap...

EDITED for 1 typo

You gotta be fuckin kiddin me, Adidas and Pumas are still rockin hard after all these years. Thats why they still make them bitches. 80's hip hop gear was off the fuckin chain. at least early-mid 80's, it turned ghey when Hammer dropped in.

3rd Bass was really cool.

Serious question. Does anyone know who the song

'Pickin Boogers'

was done by?

I remember hearing that a couple of times about 15 years ago or so on the local rap radio program and laughing my socks off. The chorus was something like:

Hey Mom what's for dinner?/ Go up yo' nose and pick a winner/ Pickin' Boogers x 2...

A fellow 3rd Bass fan? Holy Shit! eek!

I think BIZ Markie did that song pickin' boogers back in '88... If memory serves, the name of the album was something like "Goin off".
