This is the worst possible way of dying;
those poor people...I can't even imagine their pain.

I seriously don't know what else to say...I am literally stunned by this...whether you're religious or not, I think it's best to pray for those men and women, and their families. And remember just how much courage it takes to do what they did.

All I can guess is that they entered the atmoshpere at to steep of an angle. The explosion was most likely the fuel container rupturing. terrible................

They spoke of a piece of insulation foam coming off during the shuttle's actual launch.

With one piece gone...well...even a small hole in "armor" that important, was probly the cause of the disaster.

The shuttle loses dozens of those tiles on every re-entry...

But damn, that's some messed up news... :(

EDIT : messed up UBB tags...

I heard them say on fox news they have some sort of ejection system. I believe the front compartment can come off. Not to sure though.

Edit: NASA just lowered the flag outside the launch center to half mast :( There is going to be a press conference in 30 minuutes (10:30 CST)

??? Are you talking about the old ceramic tiles they used to use? Because now, the insulation material does not just, "fall off". That was 1979 times...

I thought they still used tiles, just of a more advanced material?
Whenever they land , you can still see missing tiles... but then again the last landing I watched was years ago... :(
Anyway, I don't want to get into an argument over this. Not now especially... frown

I highly doubt it was too steep of an angle in which they came in.

When Nasa takes control of the ship as they re-enter... there are a couple processes that happen in which they are connected to the highly explosive fuel.

Something problably short-circuited their... or some sort-of malfunction happened.

The boom from the explosion was heard and felt all over texas supposively.

Who here lives in Texas saw/heard this?

they had several reports from people in Texas that is sounded like a car had hit their house... or something exploded in it.

thats a shame though..... a real shame.

btw... don't touch the debri if you find it :)

The really frustrating part about it is that they might not ever find out what happened... frown

Has me rattled.

I crashed on the couch last night with the TV on, and awoke to this. Brought me right back to when I was a 6th grader and was strolling down the hall...another student left my classroom, and as he walked by me he says "The space shuttle blew up." I go, "Yeah right!". Lo and behold, I walk in the room and everyone's huddled around the TV in class not saying a word.
The Challenger disaster was just another one of those moments when you remember exactly where you were when it happened, and this will be no different.

that tile that fell off probably is what caused the explosion. It doesn't matter how many backup systems you have, you have a tank filled with rocket fuel that over heats.............

This is awful.

But how could the explosion be big, when surely all the fuel has been used by the time they are coming in for re-entry?

Rocket fuel is horribly explosive..... and produces a MUCH bigger explosion than gas.

those shace shuttles are not small... I am sure they have a lot in them.

Oh.. btw... they also have other types of explosive chemicals that are used only in space shuttles.. I am not sure wht they are... but they are rather toxic. That is why they say "stay away from the debris."
