-Legendary Wings (NES)
A beautifully done game for it's time. Sad thing is, I had already been playing the much more difficult arcade game of this at a local gas station, and noticed that the side-scrolling platformish levels were replaced with side scrolling flying levels. That, and I was hoping they could still animate the big assed head that opened his mouth to swallow you up like on the arcade version. Still a good one that stays in memory up to this day.
-Life Force (NES)
Totally ass-kicking game that left poor Gradius eatting it's dust. Of course, I'll never forget this game because this one had my cousin wigging out when we attempted to play simultaneous then got into a fight over who gets to grab what power-ups. I remember that day like yesterday, we were in his room, and he literally went on a rampage and destroyed anything he could get his hands on, but he still didn't raise a hand to me. I just sat there in the floor snickering over him destroying so much of his own stuff. Oh, and to cheese through this one, you guys who haven't beat it, just do the pause, up up, down down, left-right, left-right, B, A, unpause pattern, and you'll get 30 ships.
-Gaires (sp? Genesis)
A very good game with great visuals and a very unique power-up system. This one just didn't float my boat like other Genesis shooters though because I thought some of the enemy attack patterns were clumsily designed, and some of the game is just WAY too easy with the right power-ups. Good effort on Renovation's part, but Technosoft took them to school with their Thunder Force series.
-Thunder Force III (Genesis)
What's not to like about this game? Everything was gawdly, the music, the graphics, the control, it was so awesome and still is a real diamond of video games. That first boss, the Gorgon, still can wow and impress me to this day. They took all the really good stuff of Thunder Force II, improved it about 100-fold, and gave us this.
-Blazing Lazers (TurboGrafx-16)
I'm not the biggest fan in the world of top-down shooters, but this game was a load of fun to play. I think the graphics could've been a little more 16-bit looking though, as I caught myself playing this and inevitably thinking about Zanac. Some of the things in the game were truly stupid though, like the stages where you shot at colored bubbles. Other than that, it's a goody that should be in most Turbo owners' collections.
-Gates of Thunder (TG-16)
This is a game that will remain on an all-time favorites list for as long as I draw breath in this world. Other than the fact that if you lose your power-ups in later levels, you're pretty much screwed, everything about this game is incredible. Beautiful graphics and a truly ass-kicking soundtrack, tight and responsive game-play, gorgeous hand-drawn cinemas, if you own a Turbo and don't own this game, go out and buy it right away! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! YOU WILL LOVE THIS GAME!
-Axelay (SNES)
Never played it... <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0"> Not that I haven't been looking for this interesting looking title, but my luck in finding this good-looking game has been less than good.
-Galactic Attack (Saturn)
I liked this better than Ray Storm, and it's not necessarily the hand-drawn goodness. This just played better and has a lot more fun in it. Not an all-time fave, but one I'd recommend to most Saturn owners.
-Darius Gaiden (Saturn)
I've never got into any of the Darius games. Yeah, I'm an Air Zonk fool, so I might be a little hypocritical in what I'm about to say, but flying fish, to me, is a dumb as shit concept. Sorry Darius fans. The game play itself is okay, but nothing I haven't seen done before, and better in other shooters...
