I need a digital camera for my art class. I only want to spend around $250 to $275 max.

Which is a good model to use? User friendly would be nice.

Definitely the Minolta Dimage Xi.

It is small, light, and has 3 Mpixel to boot. It also has fast startup.

You can't get Minolta at that price.

Nikon Coolpix 775 (I know it's old model but it's cheap)
Cannon Powershot S330.

I will only pick Nikon or Cannon when purchase camera

I have a Canon, they are the best I have seen for the quality. You can't go wrong with a canon.

That Cannon is pretty good.
I used to sell cameras/camcorders.

Just stick with a Cannon or Nikon in the megapixel range you can afford.

PS- get something that runs on AA batteries!
(like this Cannon)
Buy two sets of rechargeable batteries!

I have a Canon Powershot A40. Current local retail cost is $250. It is a 2 Megapixel camera, and I LOVE it!! 3X optical zoom, very nice compact size (not as small as the Canon Digital Elph series, which are quite a bit smaller, but the A40 can still fit in my front pocket of my pants!).

At high resolution (with normal, not high quality compression), the pics are 1600x1200 and I can fit 400 pics on a 256MB Compactflash card. CF cards have come WAY down in price, you can get 256MB Viking cards for about $95 or less these days.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Powershot A40, its a GREAT little camera. Nicely designed, great feel, beautiful pics. All Canon products are great and I can really strongly recommend this camera.

On a side note, the best case for it is the medium sized Samsonite "Worldproof" case, available at Best Buy for about $15 or so. Well padded, can hold the camera plus an extra set of batteries plus a few CF cards. The Samsonite camera cases are REALLY nice.

Also, whatever camera you get, pick up a set of rechargeable NIMH batteries (I got Rayovac ones) and a charger. You can get them from Best Buy as well. NIMH batteries last a LONG time (longer than alkaline), and if you pick up two sets (8 batteries total), you can have one set in reserve in your camera bag for when you need it.

Finally, I don't use the back-panel LCD for composing pics at all. It burns too much battery power up (for any digial camera). Just use the viewfinder to shoot, and the back panel LCD will show you a BRIEF shot of the image (about 2 seconds) to look at. I do use the back panel LCD to show other people the pics I took or to review them myself.

Good luck and let us know what you get. The A40 is a really nice camera, you can't go wrong with it. But AVOID Kodak cameras, they're junk. Sony are overpriced IMO (although their digital 8MM camcorders are excellent, I have one of those). :)

It's not pro-level, but I got my wife a Canon S230 for Christmas--it was just shy of $400 (and--gasp--I sold my Top Hunter MVS kit to help finance it) but it's 3.2 megapixels and kicks ass. The optical zoom is a bit weak but everything else is wonderful. Cheaper with a better optical zoom but just 2 megapixels is the S200--you can test those out in Target, as it's a popular mass-market model, and I think they're closer to $250.

Thanks for the mini review. After some research, I decide to go with the Canon Powershot A40. The other models suggested were $300 and up.(way too expensive for me). I just place a order with www.pcmall.com for Canon Powershot A40 and 128 MB flash card for $280 with included 1-day overnight shipping. I'll tell you guy how it is when it arrives. Thanks again for your replies everybody.

Well, if you want practical, get the Canon S330, it isn't the best, but it is small and you can take it with you everywhere... and the picture quality is pretty stunning if you don't compare it to cameras more than 3Xs its price. Basically you need to ask yourself, what do I want. A tripod camera or one to take with you everywhere. If you are like me, the tiny Powershot S330 is a simple choice... it fits in a pocket and I always have it to get great pictures... and that is all I need, plus it is cheap now! Oh and get the S330, not the newer model, that one has less features and worse quality then the older S330.

Forget Canon.

Nikon Coolpix 2500 is a nice and fun 'entry level' digicam.

Olympus Camedia series in nice.

And Sony uses Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar lens.

You choose.

I was considering a Sony CD Mavica till the salesman at Best Buy talked me out of it. He suggested that if I wanted to get a Sony, to go with the Cybershot cameras (though he was quick to mention other brands like Konica and Minolta before the Sony). There's a new Cybershot out now that has 4.0 Megapixel I've been eyeing but it's a tad pricey. You could probably find the older model ones that are 2.3 pixel for a decent price.

Sony CyberShot
I've had a Sony Mavica and now a CyberShot and I love them both.

I own a Sony CyberShot DSC-P9, I will say that if you can find the previous (DSC-P7) model you can still get it for around $400 or less.

There's a cheaper pair of models, the Sony DSC-P51 & DSC-P35 -I don't know much about them, but they may be just what you need and their both under $300
