89 billion.

AOL lost EIGHTY NINE BILLION dollars this year alone. that's the largest fucking annual money loss in history.

I guess AOL Time Warner wasn't such a good idea...

AOL stock is now worth seventy-something dollars as opposed to two hundred-something last year.

Ouch.

While I'm no fan of AOL, I feel for my friends who've slaved away in their fucking call-in centers and were counting on their stock options to get the hell out of there. Yet another example of wealthy CEO's making foolish decisions and suffering NO consequences. Ted Turner and Steve Case will go their own ways and remain billionaires, while my friends' portfolios take it right in the ass.

Holy shit...is that much of a loss even possible?
Isn't that more than they're originally worth???

Don't forget the fact that two of their biggest names--Steve Case and Ted Turner--left the company. Turner's going to devote his life to philanthropy now, apparently. So I guess AOL's loss is the world's gain in that respect.

As for Steve Case, so sad. I think his brother recently got elected as a representative for Hawaii. :p

Actually, according to that link the most AOL stock was worth in 2002 was around $32. I don't know much about the stock market, but wouldn't 200 something dollars a share be a little insane? Their stock is way down from even that $32 though, so they are doing pretty badly...

I'll never understand the stock market though...

Actually your info is wrong, well the newspaper that is... Take a look at Bigcharts for AOL:

<a href="http://bigcharts.marketwatch.com/quickchart/quickchart.asp?symb=AOL&sid=0&o_symb=AOL" target="_blank">http://bigcharts.marketwatch.com/quickchart/quickchart.asp?symb=AOL&sid=0&o_symb=AOL</a>

52 week range is: 8.70 to 28.50... big loss, but not terrible.

Well it is possible, but it would have split sometime, it doesn't stay that high for long without splitting.

We dumped AOLs sorry ass for cable last fall. More and more people are willing to sacrifice having their hand held online for the speed of broadband. I don't regret it for a second.

They probably enjoy the "always on" aspect too. Signing on to AOL was always a bitch.

Not such a surprise. Why did we see a HUGE death to the .com's?

They had over inflated stock prices... once they leveled out and came down to their "real value" AND in combination with their advertising revenue going bad and outstanding loans creeping in... they died.

yes, AOL was more substantial than the .com's but... it is the some principal and concept.

Enron was around for a while too. Same with these airlines that have been folding. Just because a company has been around for a while does not mean it will be around forever.

GREAT NEWS!!! I HATE AOL, it is by far the SHITTIEST Internet Service Provider on the market. From the idiotic, bloated ridiculous "AOL 8.0" shit software, to the lack of ability to use your own email client program, to the completely annoying "free 1500 hours AOL" CDs that are filling landfills everywhere, to the idiotic "Try AOL for Free!" links and programs that come preloaded with millions of PCs and bundled with thousands of programs, the company is just plain SHIT IMO. Plus, AOL seems to attract (for the most part) an annoying class of retards and idiots to the Internet, people who just plain shouldn't be connected at all.

I say this is great news, and everytime I see these big losses for AOL I celebrate. TIME TO CELEBRATE AGAIN, HAHAHAHA!! buttrock buttrock

my comparison is with the dot coms... BECAUSE they do a lot of the same advertising and loan practices that the dot coms did.

PLUS... They have diversified themselves too much. It has been shown that once a business is too diversified, it is easy for them to fail.

ignorance, i think not.
