Okay anytime you watch tv where they are playing a video game either a commercial or on a TV series, the sound effects that you hear are about 90% of the time Pac-Man from the 2600. What is up with that?

When I read the first half of the first sentence, I already knew what the second half was. Funny.

I would imagine it's because they can't use a video game that is currently in the market. Some over rightous individual would claim that it's adverising, and that that single sound "forced" consumers to buy a certian product. You know the same reason logos are blured sometimes.
Short answer is people are fucking morons.
Damn good question though.

Pac-Man from the 2600 sound effects.

It's probably the most recognizable sound that would catch most people's eyes/ears who are adults at this time.
And that's who the companies are trying to reach with the commercials.(the adults)

Every I hear that Pac-Man sound I know that the show or commercial has something to do with a video game and I will turn to look.

Anyone my age would recognize that Pac Man sound effect immediately.
There is no mistaken it.

People who may have played games in the past and no longer play will recognize that sound effect.

90% of people have seen or heard of Pac Man.
The licensing may have been the cheapest for this sound effect too.

I hate when they play a game on a TV show or a commercial that is clearly another game and use the Pac Man sound effects.
And I know what fkn game it is that they are playing.
It drives me crazy and I get pissed off.

I don't know anyone who hasn't heard of Pac Man or wouldn't know the what game the sound effects were for.
Unless they were old people.

It's also a catchy tune.
Also because of that Pac Man song that was popular in the 80's
Pac Man Fever..

Because people who make TV programms think you are stupid.

They think that unless they use those same sound efects from Pac-Man or Space invaders, you won't realise its actually a videogame on the telly, despite the fact that its planely obvious from the image on the screen.

Lets face it, nothing screams ITS A VIDEOGAME!! quite like Space invaders or Pac-Man oh_no

I've noticed the same thing. I suppose the produces behind these shows haven't realized that video games have evolved.

It's pretty much what chris1 said. Everybody knows that Pac-Man *blee bloop bloop* sounds mean videogames. Seriously think about it for a minute, if you heard a modern game, say Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, playing somewhere, but you couldn't see it and you didn't know what it was, you'd probably think somebody was watching Miami Vice or a movie. Pac-Man is just a universally recognized "videogame" sound.

The real funny part is when they're holding PSX controllers and pressing buttons like theres no tomorrow, and the sounds don't match up at all.

And just for shits and giggles, there was one episode of some WB show (I think Felicity, I wasn't watching it on purpose I swear ) where they were actually playing Gran Turismo 2, with the real game sounds, etc. So I dunno, I guess it depends on your target audience.
