I posted this in another thread, but I'm going to repeat it here so it gets more attention. Bottom line is, please don't buy this game from EB.

Yeah, well check this out. I called my EB yesterday asking if they had it in. They said no, but they would have it tomorrow morning. I say fine, no problem, I knew the game had only shipped that day.

Today I went there and asked if they had any in. The clerk ask me if I preordered, and I said no. He said "well, I can sell you one, but you have to buy the strategy guide. OR, you can subscribe to our magazine instead, and that will get you a 20% discount bonus blah blah blah...".

I knew this was BS, but I looked at the price of the guide anyway. $15? I didn't want the thing anyway, as I prefer to, I don't know, learn the game myself. And why the hell should I have to buy the thing to get the game?

I immediately walked downstairs to Babbage's. It wasn't on display yet but they did have it. They also asked if I preordered. I said no, and they took one out of the box for me. That was it They gave me no hassle and didn't even mention buying anything else.

I don't know what kind of shit EB has going on, but from now on when I go to the mall, I'm going to Babbage's first.

That was BS. Clerks at EB get profit sharing from addons (mag subscriptions, strategy guides, service plans and those fucking disc cleaners)

You should seriously blow the whistle on that fucker because there is no way they should tell you that kind of thing. Like call them and get their corporate phone number.

EB sucks. I almost never buy ANYTHING from them. They've tried to pull that kind of bundling crap on me before (most notably, with the XBox), and I always refused. If you noticed, they also mark NEW games up OVER the regular retail price!!! WTF?!?! So, I should be glad to pay $52.99 for a game that RETAILS for $49.99? Sorry, I'm not that desperate . . .

Most of the games I buy come from Best Buy, with a few from Circuit City or CompUSA. EB just plain sucks and should be avoided at all costs . . . angry

Yea, you're right. I should get ahold of their manager. This BS shouldn't go on.

I don't mind ordering from them online, but their IN STORE policies are disgusting. They must tell their employees to be bitches. When I bought my PS2, I had to argue with the people working there before they let me buy one. They were trying to sell me a used system. Those things come in shitty used boxes, first of all... Second, I understand that the used ones are guaranteed to work and that a new one may have a defect, but fuck you, I'm going to buy a new one in the box if I'm going to buy one. Don't argue with me, asshole!

Both of them laughed at me and said "You'd pay $20 for a box?" What the fuck? Yeah, what if I want to sell it later on? What about 20 years from now when every other fuckface threw their box away? I'll have mine and it'll be a cool thing to look at to remember these times. I mean, I don't know what the deal was. I bet they get a commission for selling used systems or something. There's no way they'd have harassed me so much just to try and save me money.

I worked at Blockbuster during much of 2000 and 2001, and I can tell you this was probably just some asshole worker who crossed the line for his own benefit, which turned to backfire on him, in hindsight.

See, at BB my manager required all of us to sell at least 5 BB Gold Member cards. They cost 10 dollars each and gave out discounts to customers. It really was a sweet deal -- especially if you rent a lot.

Problem was -- a lot of people didn't want it. So having to sell 5 per shift or else you have to write one page saying why you couldn't sell 5... there was some pressure, yes.

And get this, my asshole manager gave me the 4 hour shifts on Sat. Mornings. He required me to sell 5 per shift in 4 hours on SATURDAY MORNINGS -- where if I'm lucky I get 11 customers!*

So back to this EB kid. He probably lost it and said what he did -- you had to buy the guide or else.

See, I was nice and if you said no to the Gold Card, I said no problem and ring up your stuff. I bet this EB employee just lost it in this incident...

*BTW, I stuck it right up my manager's ass. I managed to sell 5 Gold Cards for 3 consecutive Sat. mornings on 4 hour shifts. While the other workers struggled to sell 5 on FRIDAY NIGHT on 8 hour shifts.
What can I say? I guess I'm just a decent salesman. wink :D
I enjoyed the 5 free rentals a week, but in the end my manager treated me crappy, because I was the youngest kid on board. Everyone else was like 26 or 35.
I guess he tried to test the rookie.
Well, the rookie took the ball, ran it, and shoved it back up the veteran's asscrack.

Thank you all, and GOOD NIGHT. glee

The EB I go to isnt like that. I have never seen them force a customer into a guide or magazine. They offer it of course but not demand it. Plus their prices are always competitive and they price match any store in the city. I got my GBA LOTR Two Towers for the BestBuy price of 19.99 at my EB. :D

I walked into my local EB today and got the game without any problems(they always offer the strategy guide, and I always decline). The guy you spoke to should be reported to the store manager, thats just bullshit.

Actually as a Babbages/Gamestop employee, they do try to suggestive sell things also. I dunno how it works at EB, but at least if you buy the strat. guide from Babbages/Gamestop they take 20% off the strategy guide's price (it's still $12 more than you were planning on spending though).

As for that mag with the card that saves you cash on used games, it's a 100% ripoff of Babbages/Funco's Game Informer magazine and card. It was kinda funny I went over to the EB that's in the mall where my store was and they pitched the magazine/card to me and it sounded dead on the pitch that's used at Babbages/Funco. I couldn't help but bust out laughing :p . FWIW though, if you do buy alot of used games it is a good deal 'cuz hell 10% off used games is alot better than 0% off.

You must've gotten lucky and caugh the employee when the manager wasn't in or something. Hang out in that Babbages for a little next time and I'm sure you'll hear similar pitches like the one you heard in EB.

And if you're gonna call that EB manager, lemme see if I can scrounge up my district manager's number so you can tell her off too :D .

The sad truth here is that most likely the employee in question is probably under orders from his own supervisor to attempt this kind of bullshit. The store managers in such chains are often the biggest proponents of that kind of gestapo-ish sales chatter. They are usually the ones under the most heat to generate numbers that will hit certain quotas for monthly sales promotions.

Video game retail is a truly savage business indeed. You never know who will try to fuck you over.

Someone should send this post to EB headquarters.

I know they couldn't give a damn but it would something to show how people feel about their Crap.

I wanted to ask some questions about this.(post)

I have bought the GI Magazine Subscription/discount card deal from Funcoland 3 times.
The first time they only sent me two magazines after I left a message on their answering service.
The second time they sent me nothing and I forgot about it.
I did leave another message and received nothing.

A few months ago when I went to get a pre-ordered Vice City,I bought the Subscription again because I wanted the current GI magazine.

They fkn took my info down but what do they do with it then?
Do they throw it away?, because I haven't received shit.
I called these GI fkers again leaving a message and I still didn't get anything.

3 fkn times,no mags WTF...??

Exactly.

Just like Blockbuster probably, where they had some manager force them to sell out those babies, almost at ANY COST.

I knew my manager was like that.

Blockbuster drove away almost all of those mom and pop stores... which were everywhere as far as I remember from the 80s/90s. Damn BB.
Some of those local mom n pop video stores were gold. Friendly as heck service, and inexpensive. 5 bucks for a video rental? No thanks.

7 bucks for a game rental? Screw that.

Yes, the horror stories you hear about Blockbuster are true...

At the EB were I live I tried to buy a game for Dreamcast, Last Blade, it was used 60$, I said wtf.. And after a few moments I said bah who care's im just going to buy it. I went to the counter and the guy said I had to buy a Dreamcast memory card with it because the game was rare and that it was selling on ebay for 300$ and that it was a bargain to buy it there for 60$ omg.. I said ok wtf is he thinking. I asked him to show me the Last Blade cd, it had BBV (Block Bluster Video) written all over it with a big black chalk omg.. I looked at the guy and said fuck you, and left the store, I never came back and never will. I can't belive how my EB sells used games for, like their sellings Metroid Prime for about 80$ and a used one is 75$ lol!!

If you get that ass fired, he is only losing about $6.75/hour, then he would go next door and get a job at McDonalds and make $7.50/hour and serving you food.... Nah, keep him at EB, why do him any favors?

EB used to be my favorite retail place for buying games, and while I still use their website occasionally I've noticed these same problems (although not nearly to the degree as some of you eek! ). It's ironic because I told several of my nearby Gamestop/Babbages/whatever that I wouldn't shop with them for the exact same reasons (price gouging, pushy employees).

Best Buy hasn't been too bad for me except for the fact that it takes a half hour to get through the checkout to buy one goddamn item. Apparently people at my local Best Buy are dumber than a box of rocks. very_ang

It's really not a big deal to me these days though, as about 95% of my game buying is done online. I think the only new game I've bought from an actual retail store in the past six months was Resident Evil 0.

The EB in my mall if full of know-it-all assholes, whenever I went in and tried to buy something someone would always tell me why it sucked, what is better, etc...

It got to the point where I stopped telling them to shut the fuck up and actually just listened to what they had to say, I didn't care, but it made things easier.

Same thing goes for Gamestop, but I got banned from that store (story for another time) so I can't go there even if I wanted.

But things all changed when I got a debit/credit card, things are so much easier when you order them online. Oddly enough ebgames.com is a great site to buy new releases from, they are excellent when it comes to communication, shipping, and customer service.

Guess things are just better when you don't have to deal with people face to face.

The store by me is cool, and one of the guys behind the counter is a decent guy.

I think the main cause of this trouble is that game stores have the 'hardest of the hard core' gamers working for them, who in turn have the worst, most pathetic attitudes.

I know what they are trying to do at those types of stores and I agree that it is wrong. I use to work for Best Buy and they wanted us to sell those damn extended warranty plans. Not because we as employees made any type of profit from them, but because the customer rarely used them when they bought them and that is how the company makes there money from them. The customers would forget about them and just let them run out, or they would loose the paperwork and they would be screwed. The only thing the employee got from the manager was "thanks for getting me a raise". Cocks.

As far a Blockbuster goes, I really didn't use them up until about 4 months ago becuase I have a place called Sona Video by my old house. They had all the new games when they came out. They were the first place with DVDs, first with PS,DC and Neo games and they even let you rent computer games!!! Everything was 3 bucks and movies were $1.50 on Monday because all the new movies come out on Tuesday. I miss them so. :( :(

Back to EB. The last game I bought from them was Street Fighter 2 for SNES and I had to pay $75.00 for it becuase they were the only store with it at the time. I have hated them ever since then and refuse to even look at them in the store. I think that it a employee cane out of the store to try and sell me something, I would try to kick him in his forehead for what they did to me so long ago. Is that so wrong???

I walked into an EB once, tried to get Vagrant Story on its release date. The old geezer behind the counter asks if I pre-ordered, to which I reply no. He then gives a nasty look like I'm complete scum and boasts how all copies were reserved for pre-order customers.

So I walk upstairs to Babbages, where they have a huge fucking display set up lined with at least 50 copies. Pick one up no problem.

WTF...

The best thing about stores like EB and Gamestop are that while they tend to sell things way over price, they also have the "misfortune" of selling things way under price. Example:

I was looking for some arcade sticks for my systems (I'm getting into the whole MAME/arcade mood now). Anyway, I went to a local EB. I usually go to Gamestop, but I was at this particular mall at the moment. I asked if they had any joysticks for the dreamcast. The guy looked around and I pointed him to a arcade stick on the top shelf. He took it down and said it was ten bucks. Sweet deal, I'm thinking. I also notice that they have the nice Interact PS2 arcade stick, so I ask how much are they selling that baby. Get this : 20 bucks. Originally sold for 50-60, people. This is too good to be true. So I get the two controllers, plus a used Grandia 2 for Dreamcast (in mint condition) and as the guy rang up the price he noticed that the Dreamcast stick was only FIVE dollars. I can live with that. So here I was carrying these huge bags and only paying 42 bucks for the whole enchilada - Grandia was the most expensive item. Now, this kind of stuff doesn't happen often (or often enough) but if a store acts stupidly and raises prices where he shouldn't, look for slip ups. You might be surprised.
