Capcom to Withdraw From Arcades?
By James Brightman -- Staff Writer

Reports from AOU Expo 2003 seem to indicate that this is more than just rumor...

Capcom is known for many of its popular game franchises in the arcade sector. Unfortunately, arcades are not doing so well anymore, and preliminary reports out of this week's AOU Expo 2003 have suggested that the company plans to withdraw from the market. According to the reports, Capcom will only conduct arcade development on a partnership basis with other manufacturers from now on. It's been speculated that this is a result of continued economic pressure and internal restructuring forcing Capcom to focus on console software. As of now, Capcom representatives have refused to comment on the situation.

We'll have more as it breaks.

Well it's a catch 22 that is. If the arcades are lacking, it's because there's something better at home ain't it. Maybe if Capcom started to produce more Arcade Games, people would go! duh.........

This is the problem with Arcades today. Back in the 16-Bit era you went to an arcade and were wowed by the next-gen graphics, new, exciting genres, and things that were unattainable to many people, the Neo-Geo. Problem is Arcades have not been keeping the technological gap of that era. The graphics in home consoles now easily rival, if not beat the arcades altogether. So why go if it's avaliable at home?
Don't get me wrong i love going to the arcades for the cabs and atmosphere, but most of the public couldn't care less.

Joe # 1 : Hey that got this great new game at the arcade! It's a Lightgun game, House of the Dead 3!

Joe # 2 : Well pull up a chair, i got it right here on Xbox! with infinite credits too!

I don't know about the 'States, Canada, or the UK, but here in Japan, it's a buck per game.

That alone is a good reason to stay home.

I was on about the Xbox version, with infinite credits was avaliable before most of the arcade units were shipped. I corrected my original post, sorry for being unclear :o :)

My biggest concern for Capcom would be that much of their past success was from arcade to home conversions. I don't know if future 2D fighters will have as much of a following if they go straight to consoles.

Then again, maybe most of their profits these days come from 'next gen' series like Resident Evil.

Its true arcade graphics and sound have been surpassed or equalled on home consoles .The bottom line is,home games have all the graphics of an arcade experience and also the depth and variety gamers today demand.

Take the Sega machines in the arcades. Why pay $1.50 a go on virtua Tennis, when you can buy the identical home version for $10 and the home console for $60??

2d games have lost popularity too.

But the apathy is confined to North America/Wstern Europe and Japan for the most part.
And its no coincidence they are the biggest home markets for gamers.

I think if back in 1996 Capcom had released Resident Evil on arcade only...with special memory cards to save positions, than the market today would be different.

A game like Resident Evil only playable in arcades, in conjunction with a mem card, would have provided real incentives for gamers to leave the home.It would have been the grond breaking genre for the future of arcades.

These guys, SNK,Namco, Capcom,Sega, etc have no one to blame but themselves, they were greedy and wanted it all.Arcade money and home console money.

Capcom and Konami are the only ones who were massively succesfull.

Also their machines became increasingly expensive and economically unviable to arcade operators looking for a profit.

I mean how many $1 credits are going to recoup a $4000 Daytona machine???

Also the innovation and wortyhnes of games spiralled downwards eg House of the dead style games.

The dance machines were a total failure too.

I think its odd these guys (arcade giants) are joining heads now.Talk about closing the door after the horse has bolted.

dance machines a failure? fuck no.

by reading this article it just sounds like they wont be making their own hardware anymore. sure cps3 was nice, but naomi is better.

personally i prefer less hardware platforms in the arcade market. it makes it more likely for an arcade to get a new game, since thats all they need.

i was hoping all the mvsc2 machines were gonna be converted to cvs2 machines, but fuck me if that ever happens. mvsc2 is still making money after all these years

How can you say that? Capcom has released all kinds of software on the Naomi, a platform which is still supported.
