Well, got my Japanese copy this morning (tues), and the news is good news! Great ambiance, artistic flare, music, and refined gameplay to the point of pure perfection are the thoughts that come to mind. Two discs are here, one for Dante, and one for Lucia. Both have different paths, although I am concentrating on Dante's right now. He is older this time around, and only speaks when needed (think Vampire Hunter D). Very groovy.

Lucia is very cool, and has a great sense of style to her moves. She to, has a devil trigger ability, unlike what most mags have said. It will be interesting to see what I might un-lock after beating it with both. spock

Anyway, great game, and not to be missed!

Word is, they're a lot bigger, but they lack the extreme detail of the first game.

I will have this game tonite!!

IGN called it "disappointng".
Not that I base everything off a review site.
Anyone have IGN complete so they can tell us why they didn't like it?

Ok I am asking a serious question here.

How much longer is this game than DMC? I bought DMC and then returned it in exchange for MGS when I first got it because I beat it 2 times (the second on the hard with over 80% secrets found) in about as many days. This was a disapoint ment for me. Now the game it self was great, but I did not ever see myself playing it again after almost finding everything in about 3 days of game play. Now I have done the same with PDO, but I only have like 40% of the Pandora's box open and I plan on getting 100% (meaning that there is alot of replay value for me on this game.)

Basically what i want to know is If I should rent this game (which I wish I would have done for the first game) then deside if I should buy it, or buy it because there is that much more to the game? I haven't rented a game in over a year so I don't rent almost at all, just buy, but DMC was the first game in a long time I wish that I would have rented (well then I got Bruce Lee for the Xbox oh_no )

Thanks for your input.

I've got IGN Insider and can PM the review to anyone that wants it. Here's their Closing comments:

In the end, DMC2 is a better than average action game, but it's a terribly disappointing sequel that doesn't deliver on any key points at all. If one hadn't played the first, one might say to oneself, "Hey, this is stylish gothic action!" (Just kidding.) But that's not the case.
The first game, though clearly not perfect, exceeds every aspect of Devil May Cry 2 so much so it's hard to play the second one for very long at all. It's a disappointing title that's shallow where the first was deep, plain where the first was decorative and imaginative, and simple where the other was complex.

The fighting and movement mechanics are all still here, the characters and their supernatural abilities are still here (though no swords through Dante's heart this time, I'm sad to say), and it feels like the first game initially, but after the curious intro scene and the shortness (less than five hours to beat it with Dante the first time around) and ease in every aspect of the fighting, this game has RENTAL all over it. For anyone who is interested, heed my words, rent this first before you buy it. Or at the very least, prepare yourself for the one of the most spectacular letdowns of the year.

-- Douglass C. Perry

Like I said, IGN USED to be the place for intelligent reviews, but now they write 3 pages of total bullshit. oh_no

EGM said that it was far too easy, and that it was even easier on hard mode because you could only do hard starting with the items or skills or whatever you gained in normal. Also they said that the different characters only have about 20% new things and 80% the same.

Is this kind of stuff true? It's enough to make me never even think about buying the game. I didn't even think the first was good, though.

Well don't rush to review it... I mean, I hope you play through it first before you really say what you think. I just see people too often jump to a fast conclusion and then refuse to ever go back on what they said at first because they were afraid to be wrong.

I've been playing for about an hour, and here are my early impressions:

-The normal mode is easier than DMC's normal mode. It now has the "Easy Auto" feature with normal play. I.E.- You can just hold down Square and he'll keep firing(although he will fire FASTER if you repeatedly hit Square). This was only available in the Easy Auto mode in DMC

-The environments ARE huge. The textures aren't less detailed, theres just less OF them(I.E.- Same texture re-used more often). In some levels, theres multiple ways of getting to the end, as in the second mission, you can run and jump across rooftops, or you can just run through the streets. Theres also more to explore, meaning you're rewarded with more orbs/secrets if you look around before just plowing through the level.

-I haven't played as Lucia yet.

-The music is pretty much the same guitar/industrial sort of sound. Although there is a lot more ambient/atmosphere music and its actually quite nice.

-Gunplay is incredible to watch. When you press R1, a purple targeting reticle will appear on the nearest enemy, but by pressing L3 you can switch between targets. If you're between two approaching enemies, you can press the left analog stick in the direction of the NON-targeted enemy thats coming toward you, and Dante will then fire at both enemies at once. Depending on how they're oriented, Dante's pose changes (shoots behind his neck, crosses his arms, spreads them out, etc)

-Dante now dives. When he's near a wall, the dive button starts the wall-run, which is finite, NOT like Shinobi where Hotsuma can just chill-out all day for as long as he likes.

-Of course, everything is ranked (ugh) at the end of the level.

-The combo system seems to be less forgiving this time around. Several times I've gotten no combo ranking at all, whereas in DMC it rarely happened.

IGN's review seems to be really short-sighted in my opinion. The battle system is WAY more complex and open, meaning you can string together any set of moves in any combination and still get the job done. I don't know how much credibility I have as a reviewer, but to be honest, I wasn't all that addicted to Devil May Cry. I beat it I think at MOST three times, and didn't go back to unlock all the secret missions, etc. But I really liked the game, and so far I really like this game. So there you have it.

And for people who like to see some kind of score:
9/10

Bear in mind this after a mere hour. I'm pretty sure the game only gets better from where I'm at right now.

I got the US version yesterday and I don't think that it was as good as the first one. I've already beaten it with Dante, and the whole game just seemed kind of uneventful. It only took under 4 hours to beat (which is sad because I usually take a long time to beat a game) I'm up to mission 5 with Lucia. So far their paths differ only a little, but some of the enemies and bosses are in different spots.

The bosses are REALLY cool. However they are extremely dissappointing in the fact that they are so easy to kill. In the first game I must have died at least 20 times (probably much more) just because of the insanely difficult bosses. But now in DMC2, even the last battles were pretty easy. I might have died 5 times at most and used only 2 gold orbs, and I never bought any items during the whole game.

You don't buy new abilities or majorly different weapons as you could in the first game. Now you can only level up your swords or various guns. There is no ifrit, sadly. There are different amulets to change the qualities of your devil trigger, but it doesn't really change that much aesthetically.

Lucia is French (or has a very bad voice actress) and is modeled very badly IMO. She is a little too... wide. She kinda transforms into an angel/devil and is actually pretty cool.

The environments are indeed huge, will very tall skyscrapers and buildings looming around you. The camera also distorts the perspective to make it look really creepy.

The story scenes pretty much suck because the story is crap - unlike the first one. The FMV is good - but I think onimusha 2's was a lot better.

The overall feel of the game is good. It feels kinda tense and creepy, and it is fast-paced.

The last battles(s) are cool, but don't really have any bearing on the story and are no way near as cool as Mundus was.

The game is incredibly easy - especially compared to the tear-inducing DMC1. Also the secret missions are very dissapointing and suck immensely.

Overall I think that it is a good game, but a bad sequel. DMC1 was so good, while DMC2 is not quite up to its level of excellence. I'm still gonna beat it with Lucia and I'm gonna beat it again with Dante because it is a fun game.

Just don't expect anything better than the first one...

7/10

EB kicks Best Buys ass.

I just beat Lucia's disk which did not take long at all - it is shorter than Dante's. I like the game better now. Lucia has more unique environments and bosses than I thought she did. Lucia and Dante don't really go the same paths that much. Her quest fills in some of the ackward story gaps that are in dante's. Plus, there is a better ending on Lucia's disk... and also credits - which leads one to believe that the game isn't really over until both disks are completed.

My opinion has changed a little. This is a GREAT game, just not as good as its daddy DMC1.

Adjusted score after actually beating the whole game on normal:

8.5/10

I am on mission 10 now(Dante).
The game rocks.Despite what most magazines or the other sites who reviewed the games said, i feel that the game has certainly gotten more stylish and the resolution has been improved.

IGN has never been totally reliable and EGM is the same magazine that said that the PSX port of 99 was close to the neo version and even gave it a higher rating for the graphics than the DC version, lol.

I don't give a shit about what the other reviewers say about this game. They are not the ones who speak on the behalf of the gamers.I just buy it cos' i am a fan of the first game. Its certainly good. The gameplay has been tweaked and the timing on the other combos and the the high-time has changed. You can now target a specific enemy by pressing the L3 button(left analog).Dante's devil trigger form is more powerful here.He could fly around and shoot enemies if you have the aerial heart.

The enemies have certainly gotten easier but try them on DMD or LMD mode and its a different story. Some of the new enemies and bosses are a blast to beat.I still prefer the 1st game's bosses especially nelo angelo and mundus.

Here is what i think:
Graphics- The sequel's graphics are better.Resolution has been upped a little bit.Environments are much bigger and looks nice.Gotta love those buildings and skyscrapers!!
The frame rate just like the 1st game is smooth and constant at 60 fps.It never drops.DMC2 has much better and fluid animations though.

Gameplay- Again, DMC2's gameplay is more deeper and interesting.I like the part where Dante runs on the walls and then does a kickflip in the air.
The 1st game's gameplay is no slouch either.

Sound:
The 1st game's music was better though. The 2nd game's sound effects are souped up a little especially the gunfire sounds.

Athmosphere:
This is where the 1st game blows the sequel out of the water. No contest.I like the gothic athmosphere of the 1st game much more than the 2nd game's one.

The sequel feels different from the original but its still worth playing. The sequel is much more stylish though especially the wide array of attacks and cool moves Dante and Lucia packs.
I would give it a 8/10.

The maps show only the rooms and which one you're in, and not even where you are in the room. That's it.
