Obviously I'm talking about "overrated" in terms of looking at it from a "Saturn enthusiast viewpoint."

Obviously a lot of PS2, GC, and XBox fanboys have never played it, much less heard of it.

So you know what I mean. The hype is so unbelievably shot through the roof with this game. Does Radiant Silvergun merit all the positive macho talk or is it overrated?

Plisken:
does Over-Priced count?
tickled

Geez what a quick reply! Even before I had a chance to edit my original post and add in the price note.

If you guys *can*, forget the fact that it runs 100+ dollars. Just focus on the gameplay MAINLY -- from a gameplay standpoint, is it overrated or well damn deserving of all the positive talk?

But... feel free to equate price into the equation/overall mix. :)

Overrated

I bought this for $40 or $50 when EB's was doing import Saturn Games several years ago. While I found it to be an enjoyable game, I don't think it is deserving of all the praise it has received.

I personally enjoyed Layer Section (Galatic Attack) more. Much more.

I haven't heard of this game until recently, I've been meaning to pick up a Saturn console but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I haven't picked up the Dreamcast sequel to it either yet...

I think Ikaruga is AMAZINGLY better. In every aspect.

Art, design, gameplay, music, atmosphere....everything. Radiant Silvergun is like a joke compared to it.

You have to look at RS in perspective. For the time it was released, it was (and still is) a brilliant shooter. When you compare it to other shooters released around the same time it really stands apart.

Is it over-priced? Hell yes. The game is not that rare, there is no reason it should sell for more than $50.

Ikaruga is a much prettier game, but RS still completely outshines it in terms of gameplay. I like my shooters with different kinds of weaponry, not a boring-ass twin shot and a charge shot. Having weapons that level up as you continue playing is also hella cool in my book.

RS was revolutionary in its time graphically...it manages to pull off some tricks no developers other than Sega could even compare to. Loads of parallax, transparencies, well-textured 3D bosses, it definitely performed miracles on the Sega Saturn. Comparing it to a game on the vastly superior Naomi hardware is a bit unfair.

Is it worth the money? No. I don't think a sane person could make a reasonable argument for the kind of inflated prices EBay has created. That's our free market economy for you. Pretty much every game associated with Treasure has become expensive...but when you combine that with the fact that it's a really good shooter and import only on a very collectable system...that's how you get a $150+ price tag.

Well, there isn't too much left uncovered by those who've replied before. However...

If you can find it for the sub-100 dollar range, I would say a price of about 60-75 dollars would be adequate. The gameplay is damned great, and as a shooter it's a testement to what can be done right to turn out a great game. It's not everyday that each of the six buttons on the Saturn pad actually pull off six distinct attacks (in a shooter, that is).

I enjoy it... glee

I think it's easily one of the best shooters ever. Well deserving! It's a thing of beauty the way the patterns are set up and the way the weapon system works. I'm all for no power ups.

Honestly I think it's worth the money. Not that it isn't overpriced. It really shouldn't be so much. It's worth it though. I didn't regret buying it. Just as long as you're not paying $400 for a brand new copy. I got mine for $150 last year.
